6 What Experts Say About Portland s Amazing Food + Beverage Scene They come but they don t go. In the way New York drew artists in the 50 s, this city at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers seems to exert a magnetic lure on talented chefs who come from almost anywhere else and decide to stay right here Portland has emerged from its chrysalis as a full-fledged dining destination. This is a golden age of dining and drinking in a city that 15 years ago was about as cutting edge as a tomato in January. The New York Times There s a pull to Portland, Oregon that draws entrepreneurs, giving them that little extra push to say, I m going to test out this idea and see what happens. That entrepreneurial directive is especially true when it comes to Portland s food and beverage scene, from wine to butchery to distillery. Forbes Magazine About Oregon s Wine Industry: We re definitely seeing consumer enthusiasm continue to build for the Oregon category, says Bill Foley, whose Foley Family Wines entered Oregon with its acquisition of The Four Graces Winery last year. Pinot Noirs from the Willamette valley used to be cult favorites and popular in the Pacific Northwest Only. Now they re in demand everywhere. Shanken News Daily Deb Hatcher [A to Z Vineyards] touts Oregon s premium positioning, noting that 90% of Oregon wine sells above the $11 price point, compared with only 26% of other domestic wines. Shanken News Daily The increasing awareness of Oregon s wine quality is sparking global demand for Oregon wines, which in turn is fueling the industry s growth, enabling us to add new jobs and bring in new revenue to the state, said Ellen Brittan [Brittan Vineyards] Salem Statesman Journal The vast majority of our wineries are small, family-owned businesses who focus on high-quality, artisan products that are finding an enthusiastic market throughout the country and internationally. Salem Statesman Journal
7 What Attendees are Saying about WSWA s CLD Leadership Skills Conference The CLD conference is an incubator for relationships and ideas not only between wholesalers but amongst beverage alcohol thought leaders from suppliers and retailers as well as analytical and technical experts. If you want to build a leaders in this business, you have to send them to CLD John Baker, National Wine & Spirits/RNDC Indiana I was very anxious to attend my first CLD as a newcomer. Having spent my past years outside of the industry, I wasn t sure what to expect or what I could gain. The entire 3 days more than surpassed all expectations. I look forward to this meeting every year. This conference is a unique opportunity where future leaders in our industry get to interact and learn together. Ryan Moses, Best Brands, Inc. CLD provided me a tremendous opportunity to interact and learn from a more experienced peer group in my early years in sales management. I gained a better understanding of supplier and organizational management which has been the foundation of my own career success. Doug Epstein, Horizon Beverage Group Year after year this conference continues to provide an industry specific continuing education experience for up and coming executives that you cannot find anywhere else in our industry. Brien Fox, Henry A. Fox Sales Company CLD has always far exceeded my expectations. It provides an incredible forum to engage with other distributor executives and thought leaders on challenging topics facing our industry. - Kristen Bareuther, The Charmer Sunbelt Group
