Those three ingredients for the traditional feast have been hit by unusual circumstances this year, but at the moment it appears that we ll have what you need, although prices may be somewhat higher. Here s the rundown on each. Turkey supply for this Thanksgiving has been affected by wild ducks and geese who flew over the upper Midwest on their yearly migration north. It appears that their droppings caused the spread of a virus usually called Avian flu. The industry lost over 48 million birds turkeys plus egg laying chickens. The infected birds never made it into the food chain. suppliers are not in the Midwest but experienced higher costs in their purchase of poults (baby turkeys) or added biosecurity measures. Farmers are fearful that when the birds fly south there could be further outbreaks. Work has been proceeding on a vaccine. Our merchants have been working hard for months to be sure that supplies of turkeys are sufficient for our customers. Sweet potatoes have had their own woes, but as with turkey, the problems are not affecting our suppliers. North Carolina is the source of sweets for, and while there were inches of rain, the sandy soil protected the crop. And one third of the crop was harvested before the rains came. It was a far worse scenario in South Carolina, but we were fortunate to be obtaining sweets from areas further north. On to canned pumpkin, which had weather problems in the Midwest, and very little carry-over from last year. Libby s, as is usual in situations like this, is allocating product to their customers (telling us how much they will sell to us). Organic pumpkin crops have been hit harder than conventional. Our buyers have obtained some organic pumpkin from Oregon, but the variety of pumpkins grown there is not quite the same as is grown further east.
