Looking Back Rather than looking ahead at resolutions, I thought about the past which columns/blogs written this year were my favorites. It took only a few minutes to narrow down the 24 topics to three: Coconut Oil, Plant-Based Beverages and Cold Cars Coastto-Coast. What were my criteria for selection? Surprising sales trends, setting the record straight on claims (coconut oil, plant-based beverages) and intriguing developments and continuous improvement (rail cars). Basically, it s topics where I learned a lot and wanted to share. Coconut Oil: Bottom line from our nutritionists: enjoy coconut oil for the flavor and texture it gives, but don t think of it as a healthier oil. It s 92% saturated fat. Plant-Based Beverages: Amazing growth in beverages made from plants (think almonds, soy, coconuts). Almond milk has been 60% every year for three years. Sales of real milk are down 4% nationally and declining for the last 40 years. Why do people choose plant-based beverage rather than cow s milk? Some people prefer the flavor (sweeteners may be added). Others may be allergic or intolerant, becoming vegetarian or worried about sustainability for resources needed for animal milk production. Cold Cars Coast to Coast: Ok, I confess I just liked the title for this, with all the Cs. Rail car shipping is not new. What s new is consolidating West Coast loads on their way to different retailers and running the consolidated loads to near Albany, NY. Then pears, carrots, citrus and apples destined for us are unloaded onto trucks for delivery to our distribution centers in Rochester, NY or Pottsville, PA. Since 2008, we ve arranged over 3,000 such loads with Railex, removing almost 3,000 long haul trucks from the highways and saving almost one million gallons of diesel fuel.
