Don t think I m weird when I tell you that I m especially grateful that all our supermarkets will have Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units by the end of this year. Shoppers (and vendors) have suggested that should join places like shopping malls and airports in making these rescue devices available for someone who has cardiac arrest. Making this happen in our 79 stores was daunting, but Tammy Heintzelman, asset protection manager at, did it. Each store will have two or three units (a main entrance sign indicates locations) but the really big task was training enough employees so they could reach the victim quickly, knowing exactly what to do. Each of the 20 or so employees trained in each store had a two-hour hands-on course given by a registered nurse for Shock for Life, the company providing training for the HeartSine units. Employees had to actually practice the techniques on mannequins to receive certification and must be re-certified every two years. If someone is stricken, a team effort snaps into place. The first employee to reach the victim asks someone nearby to call 911 and asks another employee to retrieve the AED unit. CPR chest compressions are started to buy time to keep blood circulating until the AED unit is brought. The voice prompts for the defibrillator talk the rescuer through the assist. When emergency crews arrive, our folks step back and focus on whether we can notify someone for the customer or help in some other way. What s interesting is that as employees were trained, others asked for training too, so even more classes will be held after the first of the year.
