Let s face it; it is complicated even those in the recycling business agree. In areas where only #1 and #2 type plastics (per recycling symbols) are accepted for recycling, customers wonder why we can t just use #1 or #2 for prepared foods. Prepared Food containers are designed considering function (will it leak?), convenience (easy to carry?), and safety (any chance of burns?). Containers for our $6 meals, Pasta/Asian bowls, must be safe for microwave re-heating, so we use #5 polypropylene plastic. #1 and #2 plastics aren t microwave-safe. Another question: Why can t collect the #5 containers at the store and send them for recycling? Recyclers want clean containers, and our cafes aren t set up for customers to wash out containers. Even if we could clean them, many stores do not have local access to facilities that recycle #5s. Sophisticated technology that could accept all plastics and separate out the #5s isn t at all common.
