ABC s of Apples The good news is that the quality of fresh apples this year is good: apples in the stores now are big and sweet. However, there is no hiding from the effect that the unusual weather this year has had on the New York State crop, the source of our greatest supply; Michigan fruit was hit even worse. The most significant factor that compromised the crop was the warm weather in March, which tricked the trees into an early bud. Then came a cold frosty April, not unusual in upstate New York, but following the warm March, it was a problem. The trees that survived this (and some growers trees were wiped out entirely) had a nice bloom but it occurred much earlier than normal dates. So predicting the yield has been very tricky for buyers and growers. It looks as if the harvest will be 25-50% below normal. Washington state is also a large apple producer, and they got hit with hail, but overall their crop is ok not hit like the eastern U.S. and Ontario, Canada. Right now, there are plenty of apples in the store. And as I indicated, the sunshine all summer means that the fruit is larger and sweeter than last year (just as peaches have been sweeter). However, fewer apples will be available to go into cold storage, to be brought out in the New Year. And the supply that comes out of Washington State may not always be familiar types: Braeburn, Granny Smith, Fuji, Pink Lady. although of course red and golden delicious apples are old standbys. As always happens, shorter supply means that costs will be higher. And even if a farmer s crop was less, the tasks and costs remain: pruning, trimming, fertilizing etc., all for the hope of a good crop next year. Your best value for fresh apples would be the 8 pound club pack, next best the tote bags. Take your pick, and enjoy the flavor, realizing that Mother Nature can still affect availability and price. Not all fruit goes to the fresh market, but farmers are paid more for apples that are eaten fresh, so they sell as many that way as they can. The availability of apples for juice, sauce and cider is less. There may be higher prices coming for some processed apple products, unless they re made from juice concentrate produced in Argentina (or for organic juice boxes, from Turkey), not affected by the problems in the northeast and Canada.
