You want to serve on something stronger than paper plates but you don t have enough of your regular heavier dinnerware. There must be something in-between, and there is. Semi-disposable heavyweight plastic is the stylish solution and our merchant Elaine Berg has it on the store shelves now, in a Family Pack. And, even better, she was able to find a supplier whose manufacturing facility is in the USA! There are big square plates, 9½ inches, 25 in a package for $9.99. There are also little square plates, 6½ inches, for appetizers or dessert, 40 in a package for $9.99. They re all white and strong enough for your heaviest menu selections, and deep enough to hold food with sauces on the plate, without any spills. There are also knives, forks, spoons of the same plastic material, 140 in a package for $9.99. All are BPA free. Certified kosher. What about care after the meal? You can wash the dinnerware by hand; but dishwashers are so variable that we re reluctant to say it s dishwasher-safe; repeated dishwasher cycles may cause it to warp slightly. After the final use, it can be thrown away. Do not microwave. Finding a supplier here in the U.S. was important to us and our customers, who are increasingly wanting to support jobs and employers in this country. The recession made many people want to buy products made domestically. Manufacturing is making a bit of a comeback in this country, because labor rates have gone up so rapidly in China that the gap between an Asian-made product and USA-made has narrowed in the last few years. Avoiding the shipping expense brought the costs closer than in the past. The manufacturer we found is in Burlington, Massachusetts (where we recently opened a store) and until recently was offering its products primarily to food service but under their own brand, Masterpiece. We worked with them on a mold especially developed to our specifications.
