As you get older physical changes and health conditions make falls more likely. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, but fear of falling doesn t need to rule your life! Consider 6 simple fall prevention strategies. Make an appointment with your Primary Care Provider (PCP). Talk to your PCP about things that may contribute to falls. Certain medications and health conditions can make falls more likely. Also tell your PCP about any falls you may have had. Keep Moving. Physical activity can go a long way towards fall prevention. Consider activities such as walking, water workouts or yoga. These activities help reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. These activities help reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Wear sensible shoes. Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall prevention plan. High heels, flip flops and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. Wear properly fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles. Make sure you are wearing shoes or nonskid socks around your home as well Remove home hazards. Take a look around your home. To make your home safer begin by removing clutter. Secure area rugs with slip resistant backing, or better yet, remove them from your home! Secure cords and wires with tape or behind furniture to prevent tripping. Light up your living space. Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Make sure paths to light switches are clear. Store flashlights are in easy to find places in case of power outages. Use assistive devices. Your healthcare provider may recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. Make sure you use your assistive device as directed, even while at home. You may also consider installing assistive devices around your home such as hand rails, grab bars for the shower or tub or a raised toilet seat.
