On Tuesday, the morning crew from Mix radio station, Jodi, Soder s & Snowy, visited our school as part of Jodi s quest to regain her prime fitness and netball skills. The ultimate goal is for her to be in peak condition for the big game coming up. I am sure you all know what I am talking about, but if not tune into mix 102 each morning! Ascot Park was chosen because we are a specialist sports school with netball as a focus and I hope we did not let the team down. Kipp Jones, our PE teacher took Soder s, Jodi and about 40 kids through a warm-up then two 8 minute games were played. Jodi captained a girl s team, whilst Soder s the boys. Snowy commentated from the sidelines with the help of student Shaun. The commentary of the game was heard on mix 102 Wednesday morning; Great Publicity All I can say is the morning was fantastic, our kids were fantastic and the morning crew were fantastic!! If you don t listen to Mix TUNE IN!! CANTEEN UPDATE Due to increases in the cost of goods and low volunteer numbers, the canteen prices are rising from Monday 17 th November. The canteen is now open each lunchtime except Tuesdays for students! 2015 If you know your child will not be at Ascot Park PS next year can you advise us immediately as it will have impact on our class structure. Thank you in anticipation. Reminder Next Wednesday 26 th November End of Year Celebration at Ascot Park Primary School. Entertainment from 6:30pm - 7:30pm in the new gym. We would love to see you there!

3 RSPCA Visit Last Wednesday the Reception and Year 1-2 classes had a visit from an RSPCA volunteer. During the session students learnt about the generous work of the RSPCA, and what we can do to keep animals safe. They also learnt the 5 key needs to ensure animal health and happiness; food, water, friends, shelter & exercise. Prior to the visit, students and teachers searched their homes for old blankets, toys and pet food to donate. With our whole school effort, we were able to hand over a bursting box of donations to the RSPCA! Thank you and great job! Miss Aistrope Skoolbag To Parents and Carers, We are excited to introduce a new communication tool to help you keep in touch with school news and events. Skoolbag is a school to parent communication tool. It is a Mobile App which provides you with everything you need to know about school news, including: newsletters, events, calendars, student free days, cancellations, notices, timetables, and much more. It also allows you to notify the school of student absences and change of details. The app is free to parents, grandparents and carers and is easy to download and install (see attached notice on how to download and install the Ascot Park Skoolbag app). The pictures below show what you will see once the app is installed on your device. Tap here to send absentee or change of details to the school. We encourage you to download this app. It is available for use right now! We look forward to being able to communicate with you in this way. Ascot Park Primary School

4 Christmas Lunch Plans are currently unfolding for MarionLIFE to once again host Christmas lunch. This casual style lunch provides a place for people to gather who have no family nearby to celebrate Christmas with. Last year, approximately 50 people gathered. Currently we are looking for someone to oversee this event. If this is something you would like to investigate further, please speak to Karen at MarionLIFE Phone: CPS CORNER Tuesday was Remembrance Day. It marks the anniversary of the end of World War One which took effect at the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month. The armistice (an agreement to end the hostilities of war) was signed 6 hours earlier at 5 am between Germany and the Allies in the forest of Compiegne, 65 km northeast of Paris. The terms of the armistice were constantly monitored until the formal Treaty of Versailles was signed 7 months later. The day is honoured by Australians pausing for a minute s silence at 11am as Australia played a very important role in the Great War (WW1) with 300,000 of her men at the time participating. This commemoration has been occurring ever since the first anniversary in During it we take time to remember the dreadful loss of life that occurred in that war between 9 and 13 million and also the sacrifice of lives in all subsequent wars and armed conflicts. These lives were lost in protecting Australia and restoring peace. A potent symbol of Remembrance Day is the red poppy. These flowers grew in Flanders fields in Western Europe and were the first flowers to be seen growing in the fields where many soldiers had lost their lives and lay buried in the mud. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae penned the poem In Flanders Fields the day after he witnessed the death of a friend in 1915 and this poem inspired the use of the poppy to remember the blood that was shed in those fields in WW1. We remember in order to cherish and protect the values of a free and peaceful Australia. Last week I attended a training day where we learnt how to help families and individuals who have been affected by natural disaster. The main natural disasters that occur in Australia are floods and fires. The most significant of these result in devastating changes and loss of life and property. The disasters can wreak their havoc in a very short time span compared to the time needed to clean up from the damage and the time required for physical, emotional, social and spiritual scars to heal. It was certainly good to be amongst people who are concerned with preparing for such emergencies. The training also helped us to understand a little more of the effects of disasters so that we can be more helpful if we meet people who have personal connections to such things. It was all timely information ahead of another summer and bushfire season in Australia. Keep cool until next time Karen Tromans CPSW
