York Elementary School Monthly Parent Newsletter IMPORTANT PLEASE READ FRIDAY, March 4 th If the YHS Girls Basketball Team wins on Thursday night in the 1 st round of the state tournament, we will have a 2:10 pm dismissal on Friday using the same schedule we use on Wednesdays. Please check the YPS Facebook Page and/or Website ( on Thursday night for score updates so you know whether Friday will be an early dismissal (if we win on Thursday) or a full day (if we lose on Thursday). Go Dukes! Fearless First Grade.First graders have been learning about heroes that existed in the past and have met some modern day heroes as well! Students have been exploring what being a hero means and talking about heroic characteristics. Be on the lookout, you never know when Leprechauns might pop up! Happy Spring! Thrilling Third Grade.Things are rolling right along in 3 rd grade. We are learning about sound and light in Unit Studies, starting geometry in Math, and continuing learning various skills in Reading. NeSA test prep is gearing up and we are ready to show what we know on the test! We have some exciting things coming up in the next months. We are going to demonstrate our mad bowling skills at our 3 rd quarter AR party. Of course, who can forget for our zoo trip at the end of April? Hopefully the zoo won t keep us! Fabulous Fifth Grade. February was a busy month for the fifth graders. They were excited to perform their musical about camping to two audiences at the Y.H.S. Theater and they attended the Flag Program put on by the local Lion and Elks Clubs. In Social Studies, they have been studying the United States Government. They discovered the three branches of government, what powers they share, and what rights citizens have. The fifth graders also learned how laws are made through an activity complete with their very own president and Congress! In reading, fifth graders have been studying the elements of poetry. They have already written limericks and will be writing several other types of poems in the coming weeks. Ask your child to share their creativity with you! Motion and force are the topics being studied in science. So far they have moved a brick across three different surfaces to learn about friction and rolled a marble down a ramp to learn about speed and motion. Foam roller coasters, egg drops, Wackers, and explosions are up next to complete the unit! Algebraic expressions and manipulating customary and metric units were the main concepts studied in math. Fifth graders learned many new things this month in all parts of the curriculum! Fifth Grade ROCKS!!

A simple project can be as effective as a complex one. It s more important to demonstrate that you understand your project, are knowledgeable about your facts, and that you are excited about it! 3 NURSE S NOTES March 2016 Spring is in the air, can you feel it? The days are getting longer which means more evening time for being outside. Family walks, baseball, softball, bike rides and friends. As the weather gets nice and we want to be outside more, just remember your students are still in school and need to stick to their bedtime and sleep routine. Children aged six to 13 need 9-11 hours of sleep. At the same time, there is an increasing demand on their time from school (e.g., homework), sports and other extracurricular and social activities. In addition, schoolaged children become more interested in TV, computers, the media and Internet as well as caffeine products all of which can lead to difficulty falling asleep, nightmares and disruptions to their sleep. In particular, watching TV close to bedtime has been associated with bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping fewer hours. Sleep problems and disorders are prevalent at this age. Poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems such as ADHD and cognitive problems that impact on their ability to learn in school. Sleep Tips for School-aged Children Teach school-aged children about healthy sleep habits. Continue to emphasize need for regular and consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine. Keep TV and computers out of the bedroom. Avoid caffeine. Make child's bedroom conducive to sleep dark, cool and quiet. If you have any questions or concerns about your student s sleep habits or any health questions, please give one of your school nurses a call. We are always happy to help with any concerns. Also, as spring rapidly approaches, remember that Nebraska weather is extremely changeable so dress your student appropriately. You may need to dress them in layers, because the cold morning may change into a warm afternoon. Patti Vincent LPN Donelle Ellison RN BSN GIRLS ON THE RUN 5K The Southeast Regional GIRLS ON THE RUN 5k presented by York Medical Clinic will be Saturday, May 7 th at 10:00 a.m. at the York High School Track area. We will be celebrating our 10 th Anniversary! The 5k is open to males and females of all ages. Walkers are welcome! Registration opens on March 10 th and the deadline for a guaranteed T-shirt is April 7th. Entry forms are available online at GOTRNebraska.org. *Registration is required for all GOTR girls and their Run Buddies. We are also seeking volunteers to help on race day, whether it be on the race route, the registration table, the happy hair station, or a variety of other jobs. Students and staff are invited to dress up each day. Please remember you will still need appropriate shoes for PE and the playground. Summer Boost We have some exciting activities planned for the summer BOOST and ALL STARS programs. Here are the details of the Summer BOOST/ALL STARS program: Summer BOOST/ALL STARS will be FREE!!! Summer BOOST/ALL STARS will run from May 31 st to July 8 th Summer BOOST/ALL STARS will be Monday through Friday from 8AM to 12PM. Students must attend a minimum of five days. It will be open to the first 30 BOOST students per grade level and 45 ALL STARS registered. Summer BOOST/ALL STARS will provide both educational opportunities and enrichment activities. Attached, you will find the registration form for the summer BOOST program. You will receive a letter confirming your student s entry into the program. Please give the registration to your after school teacher, or YMS/YES office. Thank you for enrolling your student in BOOST/ALL STARS!
