1 CIS HEADLINES Last Thursday and Friday, CIS co-hosted the second annual Cayman Islands Private Schools Music Festival, which involved over 200 music students from CIS, St. Ignatius, CCC and Cayman Prep. Each school s choir and band performed for two guest clinicians and received valuable feedback. We also had several soloists who competed and received wonderful individual feedback. Afterwards we combined all of the choir/ band students into a massive ensemble and had them learn 3 new pieces Upcoming Events May 1 Triathlon Grades K to 6, 3:45pm May 2 SAT Exams D-Block 8:00am- 12:30pm May 4 Map Testing May 4 IB Testing Grade 12 May 5 Graduation Parent Meeting 8:15pm May 6 HS Boston Trip Parent Meeting 5:30pm May 8 EC Ride-a-Palooza May 8 Empty Bowls-ARC, 3:30-5:30pm May 9 Battle of the Books May 14 PSA Secondary Swim Gala, 8:00am May 14 Theatre/Drama Coffee House Performance, 5:00pm May 15 EC Assembly, 8:50am May 16 Open Library May 18 Discovery Day Public Holiday May 21 Secondary Assembly, 2:25pm May 26 EC Parent Series, 5:30pm May 26 ES Parent Series, 6:45pm May 27 ES Swim Gala, 8:00am May 29 ES Assembly, 8:50am May 29 MS Spirit Day May 29 Civvies Day $2, wear orange May 29 Afterschool Activities Session 3 ends under the direction of the guest clinicians. We also had music staff from the 4 schools conduct sectionals, which provided the students with access to valuable musical knowledge from many talented musicians. On Friday night we held a concert featuring the combined band/choir and 3 soloists as well as performances from the clinicians themselves. The ARC at Camana Bay was full (standing room only) with parents and students from all over the Island, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the concert. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for our students and directors and clearly illustrated that music education is alive and well here in the Cayman Islands. Thank you to all of the CIS students, parents, faculty and staff that made this event possible! Click the calendar to view the CIS Calendar for more upcoming events. Cayman International School P.O. 2 Page 2 CIS COMMUNITY NEWS CIS students will be taking the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) May MAP assessments are unique in that the computer generated questions adapt to the child s level of learning. The data from the MAP tests will provide information about your child s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year. With MAP tests we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed and accurate information about your child s growth. As a result, MAP testing does not impact instructional time as much as other standardized assessments. Your child s class will come to the computer lab on two separate occasions. The average time for each MAP test is an hour. However, it is not a timed assessment, and each child will have the necessary amount of time needed to complete each section. Prior to taking the MAP tests there is not any other preparation or studying necessary or required for students. Mon. May 4 Tues. May 5 Wed. May 6 Thurs. May 7 Fri. 5 COMMUNITY NEWS Page 5 GOLDEN SHELF ELF AWARD WINNERS Ms. Sherry s Grade1 Class Ms. Nicole s Grade 3 Class SECONDARY HEADLINES Next week our senior class begin their final IB exams. These exams are spread over three weeks and are the culmination of two years hard work for our students and teachers. Every year we are proud of the level of maturity and academia demonstrated by our students at this challenging time, and we are confident that this year will be just as impressive. We ask that parents and visitors are vigilant when on school property so as not to disturb the exams that are taking place, and we wish our students the very best of luck in all of their exams and their future endeavours. Arrive Early! Don t add to your anxiety by being late and rushed to a test. Be Comfortable and Alert! Stay Relaxed and Confident! Read Directions Carefully! Answer Questions in a Strategic Order: Easy questions first to build confidence, then questions worth the most points, then multiple choice, then essay. Focus on your exam. Avoid distraction by other test takers or others finishing the exam. Good Luck!
