2 Attention all you prospectors and sourdoughs! I heard tell that the Cedar Valley Minin Camp is opening up again, and that there s some mighty fine gold just laying around waiting for you grizzly miners and prospectors to come and work your claim! You re all welcome to come try your luck, but there are some things you gotta know! First off, I need to know who all is a comin, so you better hurry up and register. As Mayor of this here fine and upstanding minin camp I don t allow no shifty eyed varmints in camp, especially since our last sheriff disappeared and took every last box of matches, we had in camp! And another thing, I don t want any of you fancy prospectors from out East showing up with your sleds made out of that expensive storebought wood with screws and nails! No sir! Your sleds need to be lashed together and made out of all-natural branches, otherwise I m a gonna tax the heck out of you, so be warned! There will be lots of goings on here at the minin camp so you best be prepared! Don t take no wooden nickels, and watch out and don t get no fools gold, and that s about all I gotta tell ya! Pay attention cause there s more important info to follow! X mayor More stuff to know: Camp Cedar Valley is east of Mountain home- check the Klondike web site for driving details. The camp is a former B.S.A. camp. Water should be available, and there are some fire rings, so be prepared!

3 Klondike sleds this year should be lashed together using natural wood and typical boy scout lashings, and the use of Japanese square and Filipino diagonal lashing is perfectly acceptable!- Keeping patrols limited to 6 and having a mixture of younger and older scouts will help level the playing field during competitions. Each patrol should have the following on their sleds: 1. Patrol flag and a large amount of scout spirit. 2 8 pieces of 1/4" sisal rope, 6' long. 3. First aid kit with the following minimum: 3 sterile dressings 2 compresses 8 cravat or triangular bandages lots of splint material 4. 2 poles, 6 foot long for stretcher 5. 2 blankets 6. water and snacks 7. Boy Scout Handbook 1 per sled 8. Compass---one each per scout 9. Pencil and paper for each scout 10. Sharp hatchet and a way to sharpen, in case it needs it! 11. Gloves and hats for cold weather for each member.

4 12. Box of Strike Anywhere matches and flint&steelspl S; make sure your patrol leaders have a copy of this packet Some events to plan for Morse code- the original, old-school instant messaging! Scouts don t have to memorize the alphabet, but should be prepared with multiple copies of the code. Wouldn t hurt to practice beforehand Pioneering project- you know the drill by now! 1 st aid- you can never practice too much 1 st aid! Fire starting- it s a skill, it s an art form! Be prepared for a challenge! Hatchet throwing- now that s what I call fun! Snowshoe racing,- how coordinated is your patrol? Can they work together? tug o war-this will give you bragging rights! The Grand Sled Race And of course, the cooking challenge! PIE IRON COOKING CHALLENGE Pie irons are a fun and easy way to cook over a fire or even a gas burner. The beauty is not everyone in a patrol is stuck eating the same thing, you get to choose your own meal! The other cool thing is that the average cooking time is just 3-5 minutes, then hand it over to the next person! There are simple recipes that use all kinds of breads, crescent rolls, even tortillas! Lots of variety! Here are a couple of my personal favorites, just to give you an idea! Blueberry Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast 2 tablespoons cream cheese, room temperature ¼ cup blueberries 4 slices bread 1 large egg 1 tablespoon milk

5 ½ teaspoon vanilla Cooking spray In a bowl, smash blueberries into the softened cream cheese. Spread two slices of bread with the cream cheese mixture. Top each slice with another bread slice. In another bowl, beat the egg with the milk and vanilla. Dip each side of the sandwiches into the egg mixture. Coat pie iron with cooking spray and place the French toast sandwich inside. Close the iron and cook each side for a few minutes until bread is golden brown. Make sure coals are just right, not too hot, not too cold, but just like Goldie locks, JUST RIGHT! usually a couple of minutes on a side. Bruce- Pie Iron Chicken Pot Pie INGREDIENTS 6 oz Grilled Chicken Breast Strips (you can find these in the freezer section) 1 can mixed vegetables, drained 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules 1 can cream of chicken soup 2 tubes of Pillsbury big crescent rolls salt and pepper to taste Cooking Spray DIRECTIONS In a sealable container like a Ziplock bag mix the grilled chicken breast strips, cream of chicken, vegetables and chicken bouillon. Add salt and pepper to taste. Keep refrigerated or in a cooler until needed. You can do this part at home! Spray the pie iron well with Pam or any other cooking spray. On a plate roll out the crescent roll package in to flat triangles. If you get the big crescent rolls, you should be able to use one triangle and mold it to fit inside one side of the pie iron. Put about 1/3-1/2 cup of the chicken mixture on top of the laid out crescent roll in the pie iron. Cover the mixture with another crescent roll. Seal the edges by pressing down on the dough. To cook, shut the pie iron and place it near the coals of your campfire. Let it cook on each side about 2 minutes. It is usually good to check it before you flip to get an idea of how it is cooking. Once cooked, open the pie iron and slide out on to a plate. This is such an easy way to have a wholesome meal at your campsite!
