Dear Maine Families, BE RESPECTFUL BE RESPONSIBLE BE SAFE vember 22, 2016 I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the celebrations of Maine School so far this year. First, our school scored an 81.6 on the State Report Card which shows that our students are exceeding expectations. This is great news and I want to acknowledge our staff and you, our parents, for making this a reality for our students. Second, our Student Council organized spirit days with the goal of also helping out our community. Our students collected over $600 which was donated to the Salvation Army Thanksgiving dinner. This will provide over 250 people will a Thanksgiving meal. Way to go Maine students! In addition, our PTO also had two major fundraisers this fall. One being the Chip Shoppe fundraiser and the other was our 54th Annual Chili Supper. I want to extend a sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in this event; again without our parents and volunteers, events like this would be impossible. A portion of the money raised at these events will go toward the purchase of more playground equipment. Please note that our next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. We need you and welcome you to get involved with PTO! In closing I would like recognize our amazing students and staff. It is truly a pleasure to serve the Maine School community. I wish you a safe and relaxing break. Sincerely, Marie rthup MAINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Twitter address - maineelementary@wausaumaine 5901 N. 44 th Avenue Wausau, WI Phone: Fax: DATES TO REMEMBER v. 23,24,25 v v Picture Retake Day Book Bowl 7:45 AM v Dec. 1 - Dec. 2 - Popcorn Book Bowl 7:45 AM Dec. 5 - Dec. 6 - Book Bowl 7:45 AM Dec. 7 - Dec. 8 - Dec. 9 - Book Bowl 7:45 AM Dec Dec Book Bowl 7:45 AM Dec Dec Dec Popcorn Book Bowl 7:45 AM Dec. 23 Jan 2 Winter Break Jan. 3 - Resume Reminder!!! vember 23 rd, 24 th and 25 th PRINCIPAL Marie rthup mnorthup@wausauschools.org SECRETARY Deb Maley dmaley@wausauschools.org

The next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, January 3rd PTO Meetings will be held the 1st Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Maine Library All parents are encouraged to attend!! The Wausau School District does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability. Federal law prohibits discrimination in education and employment on the basis of age, race, color, national origin, sex, religion, or disability.
DISTRICT & MAINE SCHOOL HANDBOOKS Maine Student Handbook The Maine Handbook can be found on the Maine School website. Please use this handbook as a reference for questions about procedures at school for children and parents. The information will answer many questions you may have about school to help things run smoothly. If you desire a hard copy, please contact the school office. Thank you. W SD Policies for Parents & Students Handbook: Please refer to this handbook for very important forms: District policies Medication at school permission form Bus riding rules Miscellaneous Please send a note in the morning with your child each day if they have a change in the transportation plan for the end of the day. With 243 students in our school, it is very difficult to deliver personal messages at the end of the day. Please make after school plans, transportation decisions, visits to a friend s house, etc. ahead of time. The end of the day gets very busy. Emergency situations are different. We will do our best to be of service to you in an emergency. Thank you for your help and understanding. Absolutely no one wants to have uninvited "guests" in the form of head lice for the holidays. Family gatherings, with their close proximity of relatives/friends and sleeping in other beds, are the ideal time for lice to be spread. If your child is exposed to head lice over the Thanksgiving break, the lice will not be detectable for about four weeks- right when the next family gatherings will take place over winter break. Please remind your children not to share hats and hair brushes, etc. with their cousins or friends. Check daily for signs of lice so that an infestation is caught and can be treated early. That way you will not be the ones bringing head lice to the next gathering. Attached, see information about head lice as well as the WSD policy. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions or concerns. Happy Holidays! Your school nurses, Kathy Becker RN, Kira McGinnity RN, Julie Welch RN Sunda y vember 2016 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Satur day Day 5 Day 1 Book Bowl 7:45 AM Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 3:30-4:45 Picture retake day Book Bowl 7:45 AM
Maine Students enjoyed a week filled with sunglass day, tie day, funny hair and hat day, neon day and spirit day ~ all in the spirit of raising money for the Salvation Army. Thank you for your generous donations. Maine school raised $ for the Salvation Army!

Grade 3 Studies Whooping Cranes! The third graders at Maine School were fortunate enough to borrow the Whooping Crane Trunk from the Whooping Crane Foundation! Inside the trunk we found many treasures. Included in the trunk were a whooping crane egg, food, costume, skeleton, and many other items! We had fun looking at all of the things in the trunk! What a great learning experience!
Are you reasonable when you re upset? Most of us find that we can be fair and reasonable just about any other time EXCEPT when we are angry, hurt, or frustrated. At that point, our biochemistry puts us into survival mode where all we can think about is fighting or fleeing. Have you ever been upset and said to someone, I better stop before I say something I don t mean? We instinctively know that we get foolish when we get angry. So why do we choose to have so many conversations about important things when one or more of the other parties are drunk on emotion? As a foster parent, Candace lived in fear that she would one day lose her cool and say something unkind to one of her foster kids. Thankfully, she worked on this skill often. Some people find that they have better luck deferring intense conversations when they practice their way out in advance. If, before the confrontation, we repeat in our minds (or out loud if nobody s watching): I have better discussions when everybody is calm. I ll be happy to discuss this later. Thanks. Of course, it s wise to choose words that best suit our personality and that flow with maximum ease and sincerity. The key is to know our escape route in advance and using it if either party gets too upset to use the smart part (cortex) of their brains. Candace became fond of Respect you too much to fight with you when her drama-addicted foster daughter tried to engage her in arguments. Even with doozies like I hate it here! and You re mean! after about three attempts, the frustrated teenager would usually march away in a huff, eager to find somebody else to argue with. Later, when both were calm and doing their best thinking, apologies, forgiveness, and laughter flowed. It is amazing how much smarter other people can get with the passage of time. Some even find that their OWN parents get smarter if enough years pass. Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend. Jedd Hafer
