1 WACO PARENT LETTER October 2, 2014 Volume 46, Number 7 The mission of the WACO Community School District is to develop responsible, productive citizens who view learning as a lifelong process. WACO s educational environment encourages continuous improvement, problem solving, measurable outcomes, and community involvement. Red Ribbon Tailgater Before Friday s Game Friday, October 3, there will be a Red Ribbon Week Tailgater before the home football game. The tailgater will start at 5:30 p.m. There will be a photo booth, lawn games, and food. Students and parents are welcome to come and enjoy pre-game snacks and activities. This event is sponsored by Henry County Substance Abuse Coalition and the Waco National Honor Society. Vision Screening for K-6 th grade students Dr. Ryan Striegel and Dr. Tim Courtney of Washington Eye Care Center have volunteered to conduct vision screenings for all K-6 th grade students at WA- CO. The FREE screening will take place at the Elementary on Monday, October 6. Each student will be screened for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, amblyopia, and visual focusing. If the screening indicates that your child s vision needs further professional evaluation, a vision referral form will be sent home. If you have any questions, please call Nurse Jenny at the elementary. I officiated a WACO Jr. High football game this year and as the Jr. High season is drawing down, I am convinced the WACO staff will be this year's best example of what Jr. High coaching should look like. Your coaches coach players; they don't scream at the players or officials, make excuses, or whine about something after every snap. It reminds me that there are still great coaches out there teaching life lessons of best effort and sportsmanship, not just winning at any cost. When I leave a game thinking THAT is the kind of coach I want my son to play for, it's time to the AD and let them know. "Winning" isn't always measured in the wins and losses column, and requires dedication and commitment to a program and a right way of doing things that usually starts at the top. So I guess I want to congratulate you and your staff, the leadership team at your school, and mostly the Jr. High coaches at WACO for being the kind of great example the sport of football needs. Your players, parents and coaches should be very proud of themselves for representing WACO with class and dignity. Best wishes on your continued success in the program. Signed, A Game Official

WACO PARENT LETTER WACO Parent Letter has been published weekly during the school year since 1968 by WACO Community Schools, 706 North Pearl, Wayland, IA Articles, photos, and calendar items must be submitted by Noon on Wednesday of the week in which they are intended to be published, or two days before distribution on fourday weeks, and must contain the author s name and contact information. Please submit to: Laurie Miles at WACO High School or to parentletter@wacocsd.org Clover Kids Meetings To Start This Month Crawfordsville 4-H Clover Kids is starting back up again. All students in kindergarten-3rd grade are welcome to attend. The first meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15 at the Crawfordsville Fire Station/ City Hall. All other meetings will be on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Come to Clover kids for fun, friends, and learning new things. This is what 4-H is all about. Any questions call Todd and Laura Schmitz at Current Clover Kids: Wear your 4-H shirts Wednesday October 8th to celebrate National 4-H week. Parents of Fall Athletes Needed for Concessions If you are a parent of a football player, volleyball player, drill team member, cheerleader, or a manager for one of these sports, the WACO Athletic Booster Club asks that you sign up for 2 shifts at a Fall concession stand. The boosters work hard to raise funds to help support the athletes with their purchases of equipment, warm-ups, and many other items. We save parents many expenses they themselves would have to pay if it were not for the WACO Athletic Booster Club. We are only able to make these purchases with your contribution of time to a concession stand. We ask that you please call one of the following individuals to sign up for the concession of your choice. If you are not a parent but would like to contribute your time to helping the WACO Athletic Boosters please give us a call. JH Volleyball: Robin Keifer JH Football: Amy Eubanks JV Football: Karma Leichty WACO Community Schools will not discriminate in its educational programs, activities, or employment practices based on race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, ancestry, or any legally protected class.

4 High Five to our WACO Community! It s difficult to express how thankful we are for support we have received for the BackPack Program. Our WACO Community has rallied on behalf of our program by providing much needed grocery items, fresh meat and poultry and funding to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy items. Recently we received a generous donation of ground pork, pork chops and turkey tenderloins, the tenderloins are already gone and a favorite of the families. We are several weeks into the program and our participation includes 16 families! This equals 73 people who are receiving meals every week. In addition to the meals, each family also receives fresh bread and bakery items every Tuesday thanks to the Washington Hy-Vee. As our BackPack program continues to grow, so do the needs of the program. Our goal is to send groceries home for two full meals for the weekend. We also send canned fruits and vegetables or fresh fruits and vegetables as available. Other items such as granola bars, jello, pudding, popcorn, instant oatmeal, soup, raisins, snack crackers, peanut butter and jelly are added for healthy snacking. To put this in perspective, let s fill the 16 backpacks for a week. The menu is: Sloppy Joes and Tuna Casserole. Here we go! lbs of hamburger or ground pork. *Larger families receive 2 lbs of meat* cans of tuna. 16 pkgs of pasta 16 cans of cream type soup 32 cans of vegetables or enough fresh for the family. 32 cans of fruit or enough fresh fruit for the family. 16 pkgs of microwave popcorn (1 bag per family) 16boxes of jello There you have it, an example of ONE week of the BackPack Program! As you can see, we go through a large amount of food each week. I am often asked What can I/we do to help? I will answer by saying that any donation is greatly appreciated! If you would like to help, I will include a list of grocery items we could use. Please feel free to contact me anytime, I am more than happy to answer any questions or provide additional information to you. I can be reached at the elementary at On behalf of the BackPack Program, I extend a huge THANK YOU to all of you. Without the continued support and generosity of our community, this program would not be possible! Sincerely, Jenny Kaufman, R.N. WACO Elementary Nurse
