3 The USA has an amazing brewing heritage which can be traced back to the European settlers. English bitter and brown ales, porters and stouts, as well as the more familiar pilsnerstyle lagers were widely brewed across the country, a tradition which has been embraced and elevated by the modern American brewer. The States can take credit for the global rise of craft brewing with the distinctive aroma and bitterness of new world hops at the forefront of the modern IPA and inspiring new interpretations of classic styles. 4 AMERICAN Anchor CRAFT Brewing BEER Anchor Brewing is, quite rightly, seen as the first American craft brewery with a rich and colourful history dating back to the 1890s and the California Gold Rush. BROOKLYN BREWERY Today it is a modern enterprise yet still embraces traditions including solely whole hop and all-malt recipes, open fermentation, dry hopping, kräusening and bunging. Anchor Steam is the brewery s original beer and a true classic of American brewing, deep bronze in colour with a thick creamy head. 7 A country with a long and rich beer heritage, German breweries produce a wonderful variety of pilsners, weißbier, schwarzbier and Kölsch, many of which have strongly influenced brewing around the world. Beers created under the adherence to the Reinheitsgebot (or purity order ), a compulsory standard for German brewers which continues to uphold their high reputation for quality. We bring you crisp lagers from the north, delicate Kölsch from Cologne, smokebeer from Bamberg and classic wheat beers from Bavaria, including from one of Munich s oldest bräuhaus. 8 GERMAN ERDINGER CRAFT BEER WEISSBRäu Located in the heart of Bavaria, Erdinger Weissbräu is the world s biggest wheat beer breweries. Traditional recipes and modern technology combine to provide the ultimate in wheat beer enjoyment. Schneider weisse The brewery has established itself as the foremost weissbier brand and, as one of Germany s largest private breweries, Erdinger Weissbräu is among the leaders on the national German beer market. Brewed for those who love outstanding wheat beer flavour, perfect beers for any occasion from long hot days of summer to the dark winter months. Hefe Weiss Urweiss Hefe Dunkel Kristall Pikantus Alkoholfrei schlenkerla A brewery of great history and tradition, Schneider Weisse can be credited with resurrecting a style of beer that came close to extinction in the late 1800s. Since then Schneider has built a reputation for being the most distinguished brewer of wheat beers in Germany. Tap 7 Unser Original is the original German wheat beer. In 1872, Georg Schneider bought the brewing rights to wheat beer from King Ludwig II of Bavaria, making Schneider Original one of the first publicly available wheat beers in the world. Under Head Brewer Hans Peter Drexler, Schneider s portfolio today also includes doppelbock, weizenbock, organic weissbier and hopfenweisse. Original Aventinus Grünes BLONDES Hopfenweisse Alkoholfrei 08 Smokebeers from Schlenkerla are dark and aromatic, beers which achieve its flavour by exposing the malt to intense aromatic smoke from burning beech-wood logs at the historic Schlenkerla-maltings. Both Schlenkerla Marzen and Weizen are magnificent tasting beers with a distinct aroma through the palate to a clean, dry finish - a wonderful flavour which may come as a bit of a surprise at first! Schlenkerla Lagerbier is created in the classic Bavarian Helles style and lagered beneath the brewery and maltings. Brewed using the same copper kettles and yeast as the Smokebeer, a subtle smokiness is occasionally apparent. Märzen Weizen Lagerbier

9 Früh kölsch GERMAN CRAFT BEER flensburger hofbräu jever A style distinctive to Cologne, the name Kölsch is protected by the Kölsch Konvention so that only beers brewed in and around the city can bear the name. Früh is well regarded in the city and considered one of the finest Kölsch and best enjoyed in the Cölner Hofbräu Früh, near to the imposing cathedral. A clear, unpasteurised and refreshing ale, Früh has a colour as pale as any pilsner. A thick white head, fine malt aroma and delicate flavours of vanilla and flowery hops. Germany s most northern brewery, Flensburger is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea near the Danish border. It is also the world s biggest user of flip top bottles, hence their advertising strap line being Plop!. Flensburger Gold is a pale golden beer, brewed like a pils, with a good head, an elegant hoppy touch and a pleasantly light yeasty bouquet. Flensburger Pilsener is very fresh, crisp, dry and hoppy, typical of the style in northern Germany. Both beers are light and easy drinking. Founded in 1589 by William V, Duke of Bavaria, Hofbräu has written much of Munich s beer history and helped shape the city s beer culture. Hofbräu, mein München is a passionate declaration of their commitment to Munich, its people and the Bavarian way of life. Dunkel was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus, the archetypal Bavarian beer with its spicy taste. Original, with its refreshing and slightly bitter flavour, has grown to make the Hofbräu name famous around the world. Founded in the 1840s, Jever typifies the very dry style of pilsener from Friesland in the north-west corner of Germany. Although only small, the Friesische Bräuhaus zu Jever has become a leading brewery producing truly world class beers. Jever Pilsener boasts an impressive 44 units of bitterness, making it one of the most bitter, hoppy beers in the world, as indicated by herb on the label. Because the Friesland water is very soft, Jever can add more hops to create the unique taste that distinguishes from other pilseners. 11 Brewing has been at the heart of Belgium life for centuries and forms a vibrant cornerstone of the country s culture. Golden or blonde, dubbel or tripel, wit or wheat, Lambic or Flemish Red - with the scale of beer types in Belgium it is hardly surprising that there are estimated to be around 9,000 different beers. With this vast array come an equally large selection of glasses, each very individual and designed to accentuate the flavours and aromas. 12 BELGIAN OMER CRAFT BEER KARMELIET OMER. Traditional Blond has been kept in the Vander Ghinste family for over a century, with brewing techniques and secrets passed on from father to son. The eldest son in each generation is always named Omer, so when Rémi Vander Ghinste bought the brewery in 1892 for his son it was given the name Brouwerij Omer Vander Ghinste, a name which remained until OMER. Traditional Blond is a top fermented beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Ingredients include malted barley from the Loire and three varieties of aromatic hops. A full flavoured beer with a fruity aroma, subtle bitterness, best enjoyed as fresh as possible. OMER KWAK A Belgian Carmelite Abbey made a three grain beer in the 1600s and inspired Brouwerij Bosteels, a small Flemish family brewery based in Buggenhout, East Flanders, to create Tripel Karmeliet in Brewed using barley, rye and wheat malt, Tripel Karmeliet gained huge international recognition when it won the World Beer Awards for Best Ale, Best Pale Ale and Best Abbey Ale. A very refined golden-bronze beer with a fantastic creamy head, the lightness and freshness of wheat, the creaminess of oats together with a spicy-lemony dryness. TRIPel 12 Brewed in the Flanders village of Buggenhout, Kwak is almost as famous for it s iconic glassware as the classic beer itself. Always served in it s hour-glass shaped vessel, it resembles a stirrup cup or yard of ale, held upright in a wooden stand. Kwak is deep bright amber colour and has a dense, creamy coloured head. A malty aroma and a slightly spicy character (think coriander and hops), very mellow with a fruity attack and a slightly spicy character; hints of liquorice passing into a warm finish that reminds you of caramelised banana. 13 DELIRIUM BELGIAN CRAFT BEER TIMMERMANS BACCHUS In 1902, Léon Huyghe settled in Melle, Belgium, and just four years later acquired a local brewery which later bore his name. Delirium Tremens is the world-renowned strong Belgian ale which has brought highest acclaim to the brewery. The particular character and unique taste are the result of three different kinds of yeast. Delirium Nocturnum is a dark brown-red with a compact white-yellow lacing head. Touches of caramel, mocha and chocolate aromas, with spices such as liquorice and coriander also present. Since 1702, Timmermans has been brewing traditional lambic in Itterbeek, a few miles from the centre of Brussels. Brewing lambic, without adding yeast, is a complex and subtle art requiring historic recipes and a lot of patience. Lambics survive thanks to a few Brussels breweries and the presence of two micro-organisms that exist in the Senne Valley: Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and Brettanomyces Lambicus. Timmermans beers all share the attributes of wonderfully intense aromas, soft mouthfeel and flavours of delicious fruit rather than being overly sweet. The Brouwerji van Honsebrouck history started in 1900 when Emiel and Louisa van Honsebrouck bought a small farm in West Flanders where they founded the brewery which, to this day, is still owned and operated by the family. Bacchus is a dark beer in the local regional style and the basis for their premium Kriek and Framboise beers. Light and refreshing with a spritzy tartness, the fruit is added to give an intensely fruity beer. The half champagne sized bottles are also paper wrapped. 15 Trappist should not be confused with being a style of beer in its own right, however it is a controlled and protected term of origin. To classify, beers must be brewed by the monks or under their supervision within the boundary of the monastery, and should never be of primary importance to the monastic way of life. Although a business, profits are for the support and upkeep of the monastery, with surplus profits shared amongst charitable causes and those in greater need. 16 TRAPPIST CHIMAY BEER La Trappe Here, in this heaven of peace and silence where since 1850 Trappist monks have dedicated their life to God, products are made which, in themselves, gladden the heart of man. Best enjoyed when poured into its distinctive chalice glass, Chimay are Trappist beers of incomparable tradition. Chimay Red Cap is a dark brown dubbel with a sweet, fruity aroma and nutty character, made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. Blue Cap is a dark Belgian strong ale characterised by its full flavour and port-like aroma with distinct caramel notes. Chimay White Cap is the last-born of the Notre-Dame de Scourmont Abbey. Golden in colour, the beer beautifully combines a sweet and bitter balance. RED CAP WHITE CAP BLUE CAP ORVAL La Trappe beers are brewed by De Koningshoeven NV in close collaboration and under the observence of the monks at Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven. La Trappe Blond is golden in colour, made with fine hops and full malt refreshing and fruity in character. La Trappe Dubbel beer has a soft, fragrant, refreshing character with caramel malt giving a gentle aromatic caramelised quality. Tripel s aroma is slightly malty and estery. Despite its full, rich flavour it still has a light and dry aftertaste with a touch of bitter finesse. Quadrupel is La Trappe s heaviest ale, its warm and intense flavour rich and finely balanced. Witte is the first and only true Trappist wheat beer. BLOND DUBBEL TRIPEL QUADRUPEL WITTE 16 The Brasserie d Orval is a Belgian trappist brewery located within the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d Orval, in the Gaume region of Belgium. Distinctive in it s skittle-shaped bottle, Orval was first created in 1931 and has grown to iconic status and described by the beer critic Michael Jackson to be a world classic. Orval is a very dry, herby beer which is ideal as an aperitif and characterised by a bouquet of fresh hops, with a fruity note and pronounced bitterness. As with other Trappist beers, the flavours will change depending upon the age of the beer and the serving temperature. ORVAL

17 ROCHEFORT TRAPPIST BEER WESTMALLE Trappistes Rochefort is brewed and bottled within the walls of the Abbey of Saint-Remy, a small monastery of less than twenty monks. Like many strong Belgian beers, Rochefort s age well and can be cellared for at least five years while maintaining quality and developing interesting flavour characteristics. With a fine aroma, strong malt taste and slightly bitter, Rochefort 6 is their oldest beer; Rochefort 8 is the most recent addition, with more fruits in the aroma. Sometimes referred to as the marvellous beer, Rochefort 10 is the strongest of the line-up; dark and full bodied, pleasantly warming with bitter chocolate notes The Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, near Antwerp, has been brewing beer for over 150 years and is widely regarded as being responsible for the increasing popularity of Trappist beers. Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish-brown beer with a creamy, head. Flavours are rich and complex, herby and fruity, with the creamy head leaving an attractive lace pattern in the glass. The mother of all tripels was first brewed in 1934 and Westmalle Tripel remains an exceptional beer, with a great deal of finesse and elegance - clear, golden yellow beer with a fruity aroma and nuanced hop scent. 19 The new generation of UK brewers are pulling inspiration and influences from around the world as well as creating new interpretations of the great beer styles which originated from our shores. 20 UK BREWDOG CRAFT BEER Martin Dickie and James Watt were bored of the industrially brewed lagers and stuffy ales, so decided the best way to fix this undesirable predicament was to brew their own beers. Their biggest mission when they set up BrewDog was to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as they were - it s still their biggest mission today. When it comes down to it, we are a selfish son of a bitch. We can t help it. We have a terminal addiction to make beers we want to drink. Beer with teeth and balls. Beer we lust for. Crafted beer. The post modern classic Punk IPA resounds with tropical fruits and light caramel on the nose, the palate soon becoming assertive and resinous with New Zealand hops balanced by biscuit malt. A massive hop hit continues in Dead Pony Pale Ale, whilst 5AM Red Ale has earthy and spicy flavours from the rich malt base, leading to a subtle finish. A 21 st century take on an 18 th century classic, Brixton Porter combines impressions of an imperial stout with the body of a brown ale where chocolate, coffee and ripe autumn fruit collide in this complex and contradictory session beer. PUNK IPA FIVE AM RED ALE BRIXTON PORTER DEAD PONY PALE ALE CAMDEN TOWN BREWERY Why wasn t anyone making great lagers and wheat beers and American style pale ales in London? Early in 2010, seven old Victorian arches were converted and a beautiful modern brewery was installed. Ideas were turned into recipes, the first beers were brewed and by that summer Camden Town Brewery was out there. Crashing together the easy-drinking tradition of British brews with the bold hop flavour of American pale ales, Camden Pale Ale is like the Queen wearing dirty sneakers - traditionally British with a rock star twist of American hops, giving citrus and tropical fruit, a round body and a drink-me-faster bitterness. Combining two beer styles into one, Camden Hells Lager takes the crisp, dry body of a German-style Pilsner and the gentle hopping of a Helles. This is how a great lager should taste! A Belgian brew with an English accent, Gentleman s Wit is a classic white beer spiked with lemon and fragranced with bergamot, full of body and a spicy finish. 21 THORNBRIDGE Brewery Thornbridge beers were first brewed in early 2005 after a ten barrel brewery was established in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, Derbyshire. From the beginning, Thornbridge s vision was to create beers that would make them one of the UK s leading new breweries and the adoption of the Innovation, Passion and Knowledge strap line being a statement of the brewery s culture. Jaipur, the wonderful multi award winning India Pale Ale, is initially soft and smooth but flavours build around the mouth to a crescendo of massive hoppiness accentuated by honey. Wild Swan delivers aromas of light bitter lemon, a hint of herb and a subtle spiciness. Chiron offers a balance of tart hops, juicy malt and tangy fruit while the lingering finish with a hint of apricots and tangerines before a biscuity malt and hoppy finish. Wild Raven is complex and stunning: five malts and six hops combine to provide bitter chocolate flavours with dark roasted fruits. 24 WORLD BELLEROSE CRAFT BEER LINDEBOOM After less than one year of brewing, Brasserie Des Sources won three prestigious awards in prestigious beer competitions with this beer, including being selected as the Best Ale over 5% in the UK at the International Beer Challenge of London Bellerose is a top fermented beer made with three hop varieties from three different continents. A mix between a bière de Garde and an IPA, with distinctive aromas of citrus and lychee and a hoppy but refreshing aftertaste. BELLEROSE Lindeboom Bierbrouwerij is a true family brewery which dates back to 1870 when Willem Geenen founded a small brewery next to the old linden tree in Limburg, the Netherlands, that was planted by one of his ancestors. Lindeboom was also the very first beer James Clay ever imported back in The brewery is ecologically minded, using 100% green electricity and water from their own spring. HITACHINO nest A mostly bitter mix of herbal hops and malt with a nose of sweet corn, Lindeboom Pilsener is a very drinkable lager with a dry, lime-like hoppiness to finish. PILSeNER Winners of numerous awards worldwide, Japan s Hitachino Nest has established a cult following for their innovative craft brewing and distinctive owl logo inspired by Kounosu, the village where the beers are brewed, which means nest. Hitachino Nest White Ale is brewed in the tradition of a Belgian style white beer with coriander, nutmeg and orange peel, whereas Red Rice Ale displays complex Sake-like flavours with a malt sweet notes with hints of strawberries on the nose. Japanese Classic Ale is an authentic IPA, matured in Cedar casks, commonly used in the brewing of sake. Amber Ale is an easy drinking beer with a bitter-sweet balance. 25 NøGNE ø WORLD CRAFT BEER ESTRELLA Nøgne Ø was founded by two Norwegian home brewers in Kjetil Jikiun and Gunnar Wiig. A combination of their urge to share their passion for good beer and their vision to bring diversity and innovation into Norway s commercial brewing of real ale. Nøgne Ø s subtitle, The Uncompromising Brewery, is a plain statement of their mission to craft ale of highest quality, personality and individuality. Nearly all the beer in Norway consists of light, filtered and pasteurised lagers, but Nøgne Ø prefer beers which are complex, fruity and full bodied. For us, diversity is important...
