2 ORIGINS Citrus fruits came to Spain from China and were brought from the Asian continent by the arabs. Citrus plantations have existed in the Valencian Comunity since more than three centuries ago. From on have been a constant production process aimed to the external trade (mainly France and England) Valencian Comunity

5 Spanish Citrus Production SPANISH CITRUS PRODUCTION 09/10 - TOTAL: (x TONS) LEMONS; 673; 13% GRAPEFRUITS; 52; 1% ORANGES; 2622; 49% MANDARINS; 2001; 37% Source: CLAM The Spanish citrus, where the Valencian community represents 66 % of the production, is the fourth world power behind China, Brazil and the USA. Spain produces 22 % of the total of oranges of the Mediterranean countries, respect to mandarins increases to 37 %. The surface dedicated to the citrus fruits in the Valencian community : hectares.

9 Importance of the Valencian Citrus fruit in the Valencian trade The valencian Comunity is the first exporting Region of Spain with 76 % of the total exportations, regarding mandarins the percentage rises to 86%, and in oranges is 78 %. The fruits represent 59 % of the Valencian agroindustry exportations and occupy the second place behind the automobile industry. In 2010 the Valencian Comunity exported citrus fruit for value of millions Euros (mandarins 57 %, oranges 37 % and 6 % of lemons and grapefruits) Importance of the Valencian citrus fruit in the Valencian economy A citrus season mobilizes Employment: people ( fields and warehouses ) sending for truck Are used 600 million boxes, elaborated by 60 small enterprises located in rural area and that use to persons The tree nurseries give work to people Citrus juice industry There are 31 companies (in Spain) of juice that employ 700 people, the citrus fruit they use are not commercial. We export juice of orange for value of 158 million Euros There are 4 industries of segments of satsuma that invoice 40 million Euros and employ persons, basically women. Social benefits Is the sector that better has resisted the rigors of the crisis. It generates employment in the rural area, especially in depressed zones, with economic difficulties and with scarces alternatives. Employment is generated in sensitive segments of population, is the case of women and young people

10 Importance of the PGI Valencian Citrus Fruit in the citrus sector 1. - Development of rural areas and a stronger implication with a specific territory 2. - Environmental issues: protecting the land 3. - Promoting stronger links between people and the region 4. - Higher quality leads to higher benefits 5. - The consumers have confidence in the products with IG's European logo because it has a good reputation and is a guarantee of a good quality 6. - No high cost for producers Last season statistics: Registered surface : hectares Registered producers : Registered warehouses: 44 Supplied labels : Protected production: Kg PGI Valencian Citrus Fruit is the second IG of fruit in Spain ( between 21 ) for quantity of product protected in the market, behind the Pear of Girona according to the information of the Department of Agriculture of 2009

11 FIELD INSPECTIONS The PGI certifies and promotes the varieties of oranges, mandarins and lemons produced in the Valencian community that fulfill the requirements demanded by the European and the Regulatory council roules. From January, 2012 we are accredited by the European norm Realize visits of inspection in field and in warehouses Location of the plot Surface Variety The productive capacity of the plot

16 HANDICAPS FOR THE CITRUS FRUIT SECTOR: Fallen incomes of the producers We have lost 10 % of the citrus surface in the last two years Increase of costs. (Raw materials and laborals costs) Globalization of the markets Integration of the Large-scale retail distribution Extra charges induced by requirements community legislation In addition. FOR THE PGI VALENCIAN CITRUS FRUIT: The Large scale retail distribution wants good quality with low price. The decision to identify the final product belongs to the exporter: Citrus trademarks are named in the trade for years ago and the exporters want to different from the rest of the concurrence. The individualism and the absence of cohesion in the sector impedes the union that requires the project
