2 The History The EKU brand was developed at the brewery established in November 1872 under the name of»erste Kulmbacher Actien-Exportbier Brau - er ei«. EKU is still brewed in the German tradition according to the famous»purity law«decreed by Duke Wilhelm IV in 1516, which allows brewers to use only water, hops, and malt, and has stood ever since for a top quality, naturally brewed Bavarian beer. As the first brewery in Kulmbach, EKU exported its products beyond the borders of Bavaria, and EKU has maintained this tradition as a producer of export beer over the years. As early as the nineteen-thirties, EKU was well-recognized in overseas markets. In 1996 EKU allied itself with the new company Kulmbacher Brauerei AG, but retained its unique, internationally renowned, Bavarian brewing tradition. 3 Homeland Bavaria Bavaria offers a variety of beer types unmatched in the world. For several centuries, brewers with love for their profession have produced specialities of unique excellence and quality. More than 200 breweries and over a thousand pubs, inns and traditional festivals are to be found in northern Bavaria, in Upper Franconia. The region with the greatest density of breweries in the world, which even in the 21st Century has retained craftsmanship in beer brewing. The margrave city of Kulmbach, the secret capital of beer and the place in which the unparalleled EKU beer specialities come into being lies in the heart of Upper Franconia. Two things are especially memorable in Kulmbach the Plassenburg castle that rises impressively above the city and the fact that almost everything in this small margrave city revolves around beer. And there s a reason for that. Kulmbach residents are practically born with a passion for beer. A 3,000- year old amphora that is exhibited today in the Bavarian Brewery Museum was discovered near the city and is considered the earliest indicator of beer brewing on German soil. As in other cities, brewing beer in the medieval city of Kulmbach was neither handcraft nor commerce, but an exclusive privilege. But it can be assumed that brewing was already considerably more important in Kulmbach at that time than it was in other places. So EKU beer specialities have a long history in Kulmbach but is still very current. For example, the city s image is still marked by brewery buildings, restaurants, and beer gardens.

4 Quality and Sustainability EKU specialty beers subscribe to the careful use of natural resources and carry multiple certifications with respect to natural ingredients and purity. A natural environment that is as unencumbered as possible is ultimately of great importance to a brewery. Without healthy soil and pure water, brewing of a superior EKU beer would not be possible. For more than ten years now EKU brewers have been aware of their responsibility to protect the en vi - ron ment when brewing their specialty beers and are committed specifically to forward-looking, active environmental protection and intelligent use of natural resources. This is why regional diversity as well as purity and quality of foods are particularly important to brewers in Kulmbach. The brewers pay special attention to the quality and purity but also the regional origin of the raw materials to keep delivery routes as short as possible: the brewing water, which as the main ingredient of EKU beer comes from the nearby Fichtel - gebirge (Spruce Mountains), is especially soft and therefore naturally possesses the ideal brewing cha - racte ristics. Next to the water, highquality locally grown malt, the best varieties of hops from growing areas in the South of Bavaria, and the brewer s own purebred yeast form the basis for EKU beers. Thanks to the centuries-old brewing tradition in the Kulmbach region, the local agriculture has adjusted to the cultivation of the best malting barley. A large portion of the raw grains for the brewing malts comes from local farmers, thus eliminating unnecessary emissions for transport.

The ideal drinking temperature is between 7 and 9 Celsius. What rules should I follow regarding the beer glass? Household dish detergents contain many harsh substances that even after rinsing cling to the glass and can affect the head. Beer glasses should be cleaned with a specially developed cleanser, rinsed, and not towel-dried but allowed to air dry. Before tapping the beer, the glass should be rinsed in cool, clear water, and the beer is then poured into the moistened glass. What does a properly poured EKU look like? The glass must be at least 4/5 full. It is very important to have a beautiful, compact, and firm head to appeal both to the eye and the palate. What is the best way to store an EKU before use? Primarily in a dark, fresh room between 7 and 10 Celsius. Kegs should be stored in a cool cellar at a relatively constant temperature.

7 Original Bavarian Beer Speciality amber, fiery Our legendary Bavarian stout specialty EKU 28, an amber-hued, fiery double bock with a full-bodied malt aroma with 11% alcohol is one of the strongest beers in the world. A genuine specialty among stouts. Characteristic for our EKU 28 stout is mainly the high portion of original wort. This leads at the same time also to a higher alcohol content, because during the fermentation process the yeast converts the sugar dissolved in the wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide. 10 Kulmbacher Beer Week Fan Club Day Become an EKU fan: The fact that beer has always played an extraordinary role in Kulmbach becomes clear to anyone at the latest when Kulmbacher Beer Week, Kulm bach s»fifth season«starts up. For more than 60 years, starting on the last Saturday in July beer and beer alone takes the central spotlight in Kulmbach for nine whole days. Over 120,000 visitors go on a pilgrimage into the festival tent, referred to in specialist circles as»city«, and celebrate with traditional music and dancing on the benches. The four festival beers brewed especially for Beer Week one for each corner of the beer tent allow every beer lover to be in their element. The form of payment used in this tent, by the way, is mainly the»beer Mark«, at that time probably the hardest currency in the world, with a value equal to one liter of Festival Beer. And Here s A Toast to Health and Good Cheer! Kulmbach Beer Week has many wonderful traditions. The most colourful (and the most popular among many visitors) takes place on the first Sunday of Beer Week. It is when EKU invites its fans to meet in Kulmbach for the merry procession of the fan clubs from the Brewery to Bierstadl. EKU s fan clubs meet on Lichtenfelser Straße late in the morning. With their imaginatively designed carnival floats, they parade from there to Bierstadl, with musical accompaniment in the form of proper brass bands and traditional Kerwa and Kirmes groups. The staggering number of participants shows how popular Kulmbach beer and the most authentic beer festival in the world are among loyal beer lovers. EKU beer speciality fan clubs come from all over Germany. Year after year, more than two thousand participants delight the many onlookers along the procession with their imaginative and elaborately designed floats and costumes.
