1 21 st Scunthorpe Beer Festival September 2018 FOOD ALL SESSIONS 25 NEW & CLASSIC REAL ALES CAMRA MEMBERSHIP Cider & Perry TOMBOLA Limited Edition Glass
2 Welcome... Quite a lot has happened behind the scenes at the Scunthorpe & District Branch of CAMRA since the last festival, so let me first introduce myself. My name is Neil and I have taken over the responsibility of Beer Festival Organiser from Mark, who has decided to step down after organising the previous 20 Scunthorpe Beer Festivals. Many of you will either know me or recognise me anyway, as I work in one of the town s local hostelries. On to the festival! We ll have a limited edition half pint festival glass to purchase as a souvenir of the Occasion should you require one. There are also plenty of old festival half and pint glasses to hire if that s your preference, and all glasses are refundable provided they re undamaged. If you aren't a member already, you can join CAMRA at the festival. Just speak to a volunteer and they will be able to direct you to the branch membership secretary. Here we are again, at another festival, hopefully as successful as previous ones! This year s festival sees us move locations back to the function room at the Bridge Hotel, which is right next to Scunthorpe Rail Station. Now on to the best part - the beers! This year will hopefully be no different to any other year in terms of diversity and quality of the beers on offer. We ll have a range of 25 cask ales with a selection of ciders and perries to round it off. Amongst the breweries we have on today are Castle Rock, Ilkley, North Riding, Tiny Rebel and Thornbridge plus other breweries from around the UK. In a similar vein to previous years, we plan to have a handpulled bar featuring some well established, classic British breweries such as Dark Star, Higsons, Hop Back, Fullers, and Timothy Taylor. The festival is open on the following dates and times, with admission prices shown; Thursday 27th September 3-11pm ( 2); Friday 28th September 12-5pm (FREE); 5-11pm ( 2); Saturday 29th September 12-11pm ( 2); Sunday 30th September 12-4pm (FREE). Free entry to card-carrying CAMRA members at all times. So, there you have it. Do enjoy your local beer festival and many thanks for your support today. CHEERS! NEIL PATCHETT, FESTIVAL ORGANISER As Mark mentioned previously in last year s preview for the festival, there s a burgeoning craft beer culture now in this country which we hope to tap into for this festival. The names of some of the breweries might not be familiar to most, but we hope you like the beer anyway! There will also be reasonably priced food at all festival sessions to keep hunger at bay. Other attractions at the festival include the ever popular tombola. I have won on it myself a few times; there s something oddly satisfying about winning free beer! 2

11 Craft Beer Connoisseur BRITISH BEER TYPES I ve been musing recently on how beer drinking is reported in our cherished media. CAMRA in particular has suffered from a gross misrepresentation of its members. The stereotypical CAMRA member is often portrayed as a wild-haired, middle-aged, beer-bellied bloke wearing an old brewery T-shirt, jeans and sandals without socks (even in the icy depths of winter), drinking beer with twigs in and looking for all the world as though they ve just spent the night in the nearest skip. Why then you may ask, if that s the case, do I still sport my extravagant facial hair? My answer to that is simple I of course wear my luxuriant beard ironically. Happy drinking! A BEERGEEK Based on the Morning Advertiser website feature, Craft Beer Connoisseur. In my travels to beer festivals up and down the land, I have found this to be far from the actual reality. CAMRA still has its quota of lovable eccentrics, but the wide range of people who attend festivals for the shared goal of enjoying good beer is, in these troubled times, quietly inspirational and humbling [slight catch in throat]. Unfortunately my beloved craft beer is being tarred with a similar brush. The media would have you believe that craft beer is the plaything of certain north London hipster types, with their flamboyant clothes, designer haircuts and Charles Darwin-esque beards. Nothing could be further from the truth (although one or two hirsute craft brewers with their beanie hats and plaid shirts may disagree). I see craft beer as just another welcome development in Britain s rich beer culture, open to anyone with an interest in good quality beers.
