Market Report June 20 General May 5th saw the sharpest fall in oil prices since the last commodities bubble burst in Exchange Rates Against the $, Sterling opened the month at.60 and ended at.63 at 8th May. Against the Euro, Sterling opened the month at.35 and was unchanged at 8th May. Crude Oil Supply concerns resulting from the on-going Libyan conflict, robust global demand and the weakening U.S. Dollar, continued to drive prices up. Brent Crude has risen 9% during April. Further increases were seen in prices for road fuels and the price difference between unleaded petrol and diesel continued to increase, as demand for more fuel-efficient diesel tends to increase when crude oil prices rise. Fats and Oils Rising crude oil prices are supporting higher prices for vegetable oil worldwide, but movements were varied. Soya Bean Oil - Rotterdam prices fell 5%. Although global soya bean supply is expected to rise, there may be a fall in U.S. soya bean oil production, given increasing U.S. soya bean exports to China and worries about drought in the U.S. Rapeseed Oil - Rotterdam prices fell 2%. Dried Fruit Although there has been a seasonal dip in demand, southern hemisphere sources continue to provide supply. On average, Sultana prices fell % and Raisins rose %. Greek Currants were little changed but sold out. Dairy Gemma Webster, Marketing Executive. Gemma Webster Milk - E.U. milk production continues to rise towards its seasonal peak, increasing supplies of all dairy products. E.U. Skimmed Milk Powder prices fell 8% during April. Milk Powder - E.U. Whole Milk Powder prices fell 3%. Butter - Prices fell 3% on average during April but are already showing signs of increasing during early May. Grain A lack of rain, leading to drought in the U.S. and Northern Europe, is causing increasing concern for global grain prospects this year. Last month Maize prices rose 3% on CBOT in the U.S. and 6% on Matif in France. Wheat - Prices rose 5% on Matif and by 6% on CBOT. Global Wheat production is expected to fall 5% this year. Packaging Plastic prices continued to rise given surging feedstock costs, with all types of material up 0% during April. Paper prices changed very little during the month but aluminium remained supported and increased a further 4% because of high energy costs and robust demand.
