FX Rates Currency against Sterling Opened Closed November November Dollar Euro Soft Commodities Sugar prices on both ICE US and LIFFE London rose (+%) as mills in Brazil processed more ethanol from sugarcane rather than sugar. Cocoa bean prices rose on LIFFE London (+4%) due to concerns over the potential impact of dry weather on the main harvest, which is currently in progress. Cocoa butter prices rose in the UK (+3%) due to the increase in bean prices, but following recent rises cocoa powder prices fell (-6%). Oils & Fats Soyabean oil prices rose in Rotterdam (+2%) due to the strong demand from major importers, China and India. Palm oil prices fell in Malaysia (-3%) and Rotterdam (-%), as recent wet weather conditions in Malaysia eased concerns about the impact of prolonged dryness and production in the country also exceeded expectations in October. Rapeseed oil prices fell in Canada (-2%) due to larger than expected production in 205/6, but rose in Rotterdam (+%) due to higher demand. Sunflower oil prices fell in Rotterdam (-4%). Grains Milling wheat prices rose on LIFFE Paris (+4%), but fell in the UK (-2%). Oats prices rose in the US (+8%), but fell in Finland (-4%). Ingredients Turkish hazelnut prices fell last month (-3%) as Turkey is expecting a bumper hazelnut crop this year, in excess of 700,000 tonnes, sharply up by 70% y-o-y. Spanish almond prices rose (+8%), while prices from the US fell (-%). Annual declines in almond production have led to record prices, which have impacted global demand in recent months. For dried fruit; Turkish raisins rose (+%), while US raisins fell (-%). Sultana prices rose (+%), while Turkish dried apricots were up (+4%). Desiccated coconut prices fell in the Philippines (-3%). Milk & Dairy Average UK farm gate milk prices decreased (-%) in November due to seasonal production increases. Butter prices decreased in the EU (-%) on average due to an oversupply of milk in the EU. UK cheddar prices remain stable (0%), whilst New Zealand cheddar prices have fallen (-4%) due to high supply. SMP prices have decreased in the EU (-6%) due to higher availability in the domestic market. EU shell egg prices were up (+3%), with the largest increases seen in France (+7%) and Poland (+7%), driven by higher EU exports to the US. Additionally, EU liquid egg prices increased (+6%) and egg powders declined (-3%). Energy Brent crude oil prices on ICE London fell (-6%) due to record stocks while the Chinese economy continued to struggle. The USD also strengthened, hampering growth in emerging markets. We started by asking customers what they thought of our range of products and what more we could do to help them in their businesses. I would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of the BAKO Brand team, all the customers who participated in this research and gave up some of their valuable time to voice their opinion. The Research The feedback we received was very insightful and we realised how extremely busy and dedicated all our customers are and discovered, as your supplier, we could work harder to make your lives easier. After a lot of time filtering through the research we also discovered that you like the BAKO products, as they are of a good quality and priced lower than well known brands, but you wanted to be assured that consistency, value and quality stood at the heart of what we do, and that we also have the internal expertise in choosing these products on your behalf. What s in a name? It was at this point we realised that we needed to deliver on providing you with the information you need, when you need it, and assuring you that our products are selected by experts for experts. It was therefore decided to change our name to BAKO Select; products which BAKO Selects with you in mind, focusing on quality you can rely on and helping our customers wherever we can. It became clear that our customers, as extremely busy people, having the time to source and find new products was difficult and our vast range in its current format meant you did not know what we supplied under our brand. It was therefore decided we needed to break the range into three new categories; Ingredient (fundamental to baking from scratch), Create (our professional range where you can exercise your creative flair) and Finish (simply bake, thaw and serve or decorate). The categories have been decided with you in mind; if you want to bake from scratch select our ingredient range or if you simply want to add a quick new line to your counter choose the finish range, and if you want to create with specialised professional baking products like improvers or sugar paste then we have these for you too. We are here to help! As I have already alluded, we know we can do more to help you, and our research found that product information, basic technical information, ideas and recipes were cited most frequently as pieces of information you wanted readily available. This month in the centre of this magazine and in the product guide, we have listed all the products within the range so you can easily find what you want. We are also working to re-package all the products so they are up to retail standards, you will have all the basic technical information necessary, plus recipe and usage information immediately to hand; plus additional recipes and ideas are available on our website which launches on 25th January.
