FX Rates Currency against Sterling Opened October Closed October Dollar Euro Soft Commodities Sugar prices increased on LIFFE (+3%), with global demand forecast to increase 2% y-o-y to 70.5m tonnes, mainly driven by higher demand from Asia. Cocoa bean prices fell on LIFFE (-8%) despite concerns over transportation in West Africa, production forecasts remain up 0% y-o-y at 4.3m tonnes in 203/4. Cocoa butter has fallen (-%); however, prices for cocoa powder have risen (+6%). Oils and Fats Soyabean oil prices continued to fall in Rotterdam (-2%), as good weather during the growing period resulted in soyabean production increasing 9% y-o-y to 3.m tonnes in 204/5. Palm oil and Palm kernel oil prices were up in Malaysia (+8%), while rape seed oil prices rose in Rotterdam (+3%). Good general supply prospects are keeping prices stable overall. Sunflower oil prices rose in Rotterdam (+2%) as global production is expected to fall % y-o-y in 204/5. Coconut oil prices fell in Rotterdam (-2%) and Extra Virgin olive oil prices fell in Spain (-2%). Grains Global wheat prices have increased in recent weeks, after global consumption for 204/5 has been revised up % from last month s forecast to 74.m tonnes causing Milling wheat prices to increase on LIFFE Paris (+9%). Ingredients With a smaller crop this year, US almond prices rose (+5%) in the EU. Turkish hazelnuts have fallen (-2%) on average, but still remain high on short supply. Turkish dried apricots increased (+0%) on reduced supply, as did sultanas (+7%) mainly due to quality concerns over the new crop. US raisins were unchanged (0%). Meat & Dairy EU milk production continues to seasonally decline, although remains up y-oy. EU butter prices fell (-3%). SMP prices in the EU continued to drop (-3%), however, UK SMP prices increased (+9%). Cheddar cheese prices dropped in the UK (-8%). EU egg prices increased again (+3%), with processed whole liquid egg and liquid egg white both rising (+3%). Energy Prices for Brent crude oil continued to fall on ICE London (-9%), due to slowing demand and increasing supply, driven by higher OPEC production. Diesel prices fell in Europe (-6%), in line with crude oil prices. Metals A surge in home and car sales in the US caused prices for aluminium to increase (+3%) on the LME. 3 Our 50th CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY Year Review with CEO Mark Tomlinson It s finally here, the last month of our 50th Anniversary celebrations and the date on which BAKO North Western was registered (the 28th December). So I thought the best way to round up our year of celebrations was to review BAKO North Western s, past, present and future with CEO Mark Tomlinson. After a year of celebrations let s firstly take a look back over the highlights of the year. Mark comments, It is important that customers firstly understand that all the ideas surrounding our 50th celebrations came directly from our staff, with no ulterior motive, other than to enjoy and celebrate this momentous occasion. One of the main highlights was the Family Fun Day, which was held in August and had a 60 s theme; the event was hugely impressive and everybody who commented on the event expressed how much of a good time they had. Competitions including the Golden Ticket and 50% Off Offers, which also took place during the year, meant there was something for everyone. We also held an event for staff on the premises which gave everybody the opportunity to let their hair down and party, It was a fantastic inclusive event for staff to show them how much the business appreciates all the hard work they put in. So what s next, having been built up from the back of a bakery, sharing out a pallet of lard between the five founding members, to a multi million pound business with state of the art warehousing facilities, what else can BAKO North Western achieve? Mark firstly delves into BAKO North Western s acquisition of BAKO South Eastern and ABC which has created a mini BAKO North Western Group, This has allowed us to leverage purchasing and sales opportunities throughout a larger region and engage with customers we wouldn t have been able to before. As well as providing access to customers in a new region, BAKO North Western has focused its efforts on broadening its customer base from bakers and confectioners to hotels and hospitals, while maintaining its cooperative ethos of putting customers first. In fact, Mark goes onto to explain, although it may seem a cliché the customer really is key to our business success. A huge amount of focus has gone into this, including the introduction of the Customer Care team, to allow the business to compete in a highly competitive market place. We know we are getting better at this, Mark reveals recent results from the survey, to benchmark ourselves on our customer care standards, look better than last year and we will continue to offer customers the personal service to which they have become accustomed. The main aim of the business for the future, as Mark divulges, is simply to maintain a consistent, supportive and comprehensive supply chain for our customers. Whilst this may mean that we will forego the huge profits of a cut-throat commercial organisation it will be because we understand the value of reinvesting in our resources, ensuring that we are here for another 50 years.
