Market Report April 2011 General World food prices have risen substantially this year and flooding in some of the major commodity exporting areas has prompted fears that this trend could continue. Yet while prices are higher than their peak in 2008, when a food crisis prompted worldwide riots and demonstrations, the F.A.O. has emphasised we are not in the midst of another emergency. Exchange Rates Against the Dollar, Sterling opened the month at 1.55 and ended at 1.61 at March 10th. Against the Euro, Sterling opened the month at 1.19 and ended at 1.18 at March 10th. Crude Oil Brent Crude Oil prices rose 10% on ICE, as demand remains high and speculation rose that Egyptian unrest could threaten key oil shipments. E.U. diesel prices were rose 10%, supported by the rising cost of crude oil. Fats and Oils Following months of steep increases the Vegetable Oil complex has remained stable, with oil prices marginally lower during the month. Dried Fruit Sultanas Turkish Sultana prices have increased further in the past month. It was thought demand would ease after New Year, as most large contracts had been concluded, but it seems buyers did not cover their total requirements earlier in the season, as prices were already high. As European buyers have entered the market prices are likely to remain very firm for the foreseeable future. Indeed, we could see high prices through to new crop. Currants There are almost no Greek Currants left but demand is weak, as most buyers have covered their requirements in the knowledge that Greece had limited quantities to offer. Prices have not been subject to the very sharp increases in other dried vine fruit markets and the weaker Euro has helped soften out some of the price increases. Coconut Desiccated Coconut prices rose 16%, as millers face constrained supply, given poor weather and rising demand for Coconut Oil. Dairy E.U. dairy prices remain high, given strong export demand, as world market prices remain above last year's levels. Skimmed Milk Powder Prices rose 13% as supplies are limited because of higher exports and stronger demand from the animal feed sector. Butter, Whole Milk Powder and Whey Powder Prices rose 12%, because of strong export demand. U.K. Cheddar Prices are stable but there is strong evidence that Cream and Cheese prices are beginning to increase. Egg E.U. prices fell 6% and Liquid Egg prices fell 5%, as the market remains oversupplied. Grains Grain prices increased sharply, influenced by strong demand from key importing regions in North Africa that are trying to secure supplies amidst the latest political turmoil seen in some countries. U.S. Wheat - Prices rose 11% on CBOT, given strong foreign demand, as Argentina's supply is temporarily unavailable because of port strikes. E.U. Wheat - Prices rose 6% on MATIF and ended up 1% on LIFFE. Aluminium L.M.E. base metal prices were mixed, given uncertainty about China's economic tightening measures and Chinese New Year holidays. Aluminium prices have risen to all time Sterling highs.
