Firstly I am very pleased to announce the launch of our NEW gluten free confectionery from Ridges. This selection of individually wrapped products are perfect for adding a gluten free option to your offering and won t compromise on quality or taste. The selection includes Mince Pies, Cherry Bakewells, Muffins, Flapjack and Brownies to name just a few. For full details see page 2. We also have the new on the go Street Pie selection from Wrights. FX Rates Currency against Sterling Opened October Closed October Dollar Euro Energy Brent crude oil prices on ICE London increased (+2%) and light sweet crude oil on NYMEX US (+%) rose as the Chinese stock market stabilised after a holiday period. Russia s intervention in Syria could raise tension in the Middle East further, which could affect supplies from the region. EU petrol fell (-5%) and EU diesel fell (-3%). Soft Commodities Cocoa bean prices rose on ICE US (+3%) and LIFFE London (+2%) due to reports that cocoa grinding in the EU rose 2% y-o-y to 334,362 tonnes in Q3 205, the highest level since Q 204. Cocoa butter prices rose in the UK (+8%), but cocoa powder prices fell (-2%). Oils & Fats Soyabean oil prices increased in Rotterdam (+5%) due to good demand while Palm oil prices continued to rise in Rotterdam (+3%) as large stocks in Indonesia and Malaysia offset concerns about the effect of potential El Nino related dryness. Rapeseed oil prices rose (+4%) and Sunflower oil prices rose (+7%) in Rotterdam. Extra virgin olive oil prices fell in Spain (-6%) and Italy (-6%) due to the start of the olive harvest and a rise in oil supplies to the market place. Lampante olive oil prices in Spain also fell (-6%). Grains Milling wheat prices remained stable on CBOT US (0%), however prices rose in Germany (+4%), on LIFFE Paris (+2%) and in the UK (+%) due to weather concerns in the Black Sea region. Oat prices rose on CBOT US (+2%) and in the UK (+%). Ingredients Turkish hazelnut prices rose last month (+6%), supported by a stronger Turkish Lira (TRY). However, prices remain 29% down y-o-y as Turkey is expecting a bumper hazelnut crop this year, in excess of 700,000 tonnes. Almond prices were up in the US (+3%) with production in California estimated at 800,000 tonnes in 205/6, down 4% y-o-y following the ongoing issues with water shortages. For dried fruit, Turkish sultana prices fell (-%), US raisins remained steady (0%) while Turkish dried apricots were up (+4%). Desiccated coconut was stable in the Philippines (0%). Vegetables Potato prices have declined on average (-5%) and onion prices fell (-3%) across the EU as the harvest is in full swing. Milk & Dairy UK farm gate milk prices have stayed level m-o-m in October (0%). EU butter prices increased (+6%) on average due to a rise in domestic and international demand although recent price declines in Southern Hemisphere is likely to pull down European prices. European SMP prices were up (+5%) due to high volumes going into Private Storage Aid, reducing availability on the market. WMP prices in Europe have increased by (+9%) as a result of higher demand. 3 The end of year report with CEO Mark Tomlinson As it is the last edition of the year I wanted to summarise all the changes that have taken place around the business and look to the future of the BAKO North Western Group, and so I took the opportunity to sit down with Mark Tomlinson to bring you as much information as possible. It was clear as we spoke that the real focus of the business over the last year was in sales performance, investing in staff, improving customer service plus the acquisition of BAKO Northern and Scotland, contributing to a great overall company performance. Sales Performance North Western (NW) and South Eastern (SE) have both seen healthy growth in both sales and margin, however neither have been immune to the depression in commodity prices. Both companies have remained focussed on delivering to our core bakery customer base, with further investment seen at South Eastern in the form of additional sales staff to ensure all customers are visited on a regular basis. South Eastern s company infrastructure has had to work hard to keep pace with the upturn and deliver to customers, and this will continue to be a focus of improvement. ABC has redoubled its efforts and has greatly benefited from the experience of Andrew, Paul and John, as they focus on winning new business with manufacturers. Investing in Staff Staff are the backbone of a business (to quote Mark directly) and this year our efforts have been focussed on the Investors in People Accreditation, which was successfully achieved at NW and SE, and ensures that we always engage with staff and invest in their development. Improving Customer Service As we continue to promote the health, wellbeing and development of our staff, the company has invested in its staffing levels to ensure consistent customer service across the business, which will set us aside from our competitors. The end of last year saw the introduction of the new Food Information Regulations, which was a huge undertaking for both us and customers, and so a technical team was introduced at NW to service the whole group. This ensures that our products are compliant, safe and of an acceptable quality, as well as providing customers the information needed to run their businesses. The decision was also made this year to centralise the accounting and customer care function at NW, so that customers could benefit not only from the economies of scale but in receiving a consistent, across group, service. Acquisition of Northern and Scotland The acquisition of BAKO Northern and Scotland had been on the agenda for the last 2 months and was eventually finalised in August this year. This growth allows the group to further expand its coverage into its core customer markets, serve a wider area and provide further opportunities to both suppliers and staff. The Future and Product Offering The start of next year sees a big change in our BAKO brand products which will be re-branded from BAKO Own Label to BAKO Select. Over the years the range has been misunderstood, seen by some as overly expensive and of poor quality, which is certainly not true. We have rigorous procedures in place that ensure we select the best manufacturers in order to deliver high quality products for our customers. The new brand, re-launching in January 206, addresses these misgivings and presents a clear, instantly recognisable, quality range of products at a reasonable price, which are there to help maximise our customer s profits.
