FX Rates Currency against Sterling Opened March Closed March Dollar Euro.2.27 Soft Commodities Prices for cocoa beans increased on the ICE (+%) but remained unchanged on the LIFFE (+0%). In the UK, cocoa butter prices increased (+%) reflecting continued demand from the chocolate industry, particularly from the emerging markets. Cocoa powder prices decreased (-7%) due to low demand and increased supply. Oils & Fats Palm oil prices fell in Rotterdam (-4%), as news of higher monthly production in Malaysia eased concerns over the tight stock situation. Sunflower oil prices rose in Ukraine (+3%), due to concerns about political uncertainty in Ukraine. Ukraine is the world s largest producer and exporter of sunflower oil. Soyabean oil prices rose on CBOT US (+3%) and in Rotterdam (+%) due to concerns over wet and cold weather slowing soybean planting in the US and tighter than expected US stocks. US ending stocks are estimated down 7% y-o-y to 3.6m tonnes. Rapeseed oil prices fell in Rotterdam (-3%) due to favourable weather in the main EU growing regions. Palm kernel oil prices fell in Indonesia (-4%), Malaysia (-3%), and Rotterdam (-2%). Coconut oil prices rose in the Philippines (+5%) and in Rotterdam (+5%). Extra virgin olive oil prices rose in Italy (+3%) but fell in Spain (-%). Lampante olive oil in Spain fell (-7%). Grains Global wheat prices were mixed in the past month with prices rising on CBOT US (+2%), in the UK (+2%) and on LIFFE Paris (+%), driven by supply concerns from the Black Sea region and adverse weather in the US. Ingredients Almond prices fell overall in the EU (-3%) and there are still concerns over the drought in the US. Spanish almonds also fell (-3%). Turkish hazelnuts increased (+2%) as severe frosts damaged crops, however, the total affect is not yet known. Turkish raisins and sultanas, on the other hand remained unchanged (0%) on average in the EU, as the growing regions were not affected by the cold weather. Black pepper prices have been increasing due to tight supply; in India prices rose (+%) as the season comes to an end, while Malaysian prices rose (+7%) in anticipation of the next harvest in June. White pepper from Indonesia and Malaysia also both rose (+6%) in the EU. Milk & Dairy EU milk deliveries have been increasing seasonally and remain up y-o-y, leading the price of some dairy commodities to fall. EU Butter prices fell with prices down in the UK (-3%). SMP and WMP prices in the EU decreased, with falls seen on the continent and the UK (-3%). Cheddar cheese prices were down in UK by (-3%). Energy Prices for Brent crude oil on ICE London rose (+%) driven by continuing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, the world s largest energy exporter. Prices rose in Europe for petrol (+4%) and diesel (+3%), influenced by crude oil prices. Metals All base metals rose on the LME, driven by improving economic sentiment in Europe. 3 BAKO North Western s Apprentices As we emerge from the UK s worst recession we are still seeing headlines about youth unemployment remaining inexplicably high. A recent parliamentary report put the number of 6 to 24 year olds not in fulltime education or training at just over 743,000. So why is the figure so high? One explanation could be the increase in university tuition fees, with the average student paying 9,000 per year in order to receive a university education, many students are leaving university with more than just a degree! The alternative? Could it be the Government backed initiative designed to encourage school and college leavers into fulltime work The Apprenticeship? When it comes to apprenticeships, you may think of manufacturing, engineering, plumbing and bricklaying. Modern apprenticeships can be gained in all sorts of areas now, including hospitality, accountancy and finance, facilities management, beauty, logistics and health and social care. The benefits to a business can be enormous, more than 00,000 employers in over 60,000 workplaces can t be wrong! Apprentices tend to be eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. Remember, an Apprentice is there because they want to be they have made an active choice to learn on the job and a commitment to a specific career. They can fill any skill gaps in the workforce, often introducing new techniques and technology to increase productivity. Taking on Apprentices can also help to secure a supply of skilled young recruits - especially important for the replacement of an ageing workforce. Plus Apprenticeships can encourage a culture of learning and development within a business. All these reasons have contributed to our now fully fledged Apprenticeship Scheme, and having proved successful we wanted to introduce you to the young people who are the future of bako North Western. Andrew Gahagan was the first to join in the Marketing department, having gained good GCSE s and A-Levels he felt the step into university, with its extortionate fees, would not be beneficial and thought marketing was an area he would like to work in. In the 8 months Andrew has worked here he has gained both firsthand experience, and an education, and is a valuable member of the team while undertaking much of the digital marketing we do. Ryan Howarth joined about 8 months later having found out about our Apprenticeship Scheme through a local college and chose bako as a larger company with more potential, job security and a more diverse job role. Ryan works within the Supply Chain department and also studies Business Administration. Ria Corless (Logistics) and Katie Windle (Accounts) joined us around 3 months ago and are both studying Business Administration, they both wanted to work and study and felt that an Apprenticeship was the best way to achieve this. They have found the business very welcoming and are already starting to settle into their roles. And finally, Peter Earnshaw who has only been in the business a couple of weeks is working in the Customer Service department, he has already learnt the order process and will be studying in this area too.
