27 The Rise of Feudalism in Europe The Roman Empire once had a very strong emperor who commanded a powerful army. Barbarian kings conquered the Roman Empire, but these kings were weak and did not have a powerful army. Vikings,, Magyars and Muslims invaded Europe. A king named Charlemagn e created a system called feudalism in order to provide protection for his kingdom.

29 Europe s Feudal System king noble knight peasants (some known as serfs)

30 Medieval Europe s Feudal System 1. The king controls all of the land in his kingdom.

31 2. The king divides his land and gives pieces of land to nobles.

32 3. The nobles then divide their land and give these pieces of land to knights who protect the land.

33 4. Peasants are allowed to live on the land and build farms. Some peasants, called serfs, are not permitted to leave.

34 5. Knights eat some of the food and sell the rest to pay for equipment such as armor, swords, and horses.

35 In summary: peasants work, knights protect, nobles collect tax, king gets rich! 6. Nobles collect a tax (food) from peasants. The nobles sell surplus food and then give the profits to the king.
