4 EDITOR'S NOTE What is this magazine? Is it for listings and events? Someone asked me that the other day and it's usually easy to give some sort of answer that sums it up without really investing in a conversation. Something like it's a city listings magazine with some events, and an inordinate amount of high quality photography and writing. But there really aren't actually that many listings. This month we have an interview with three people that are not new to the publishing world. Their food and culture quarterly named The Cleaver Quarterly is made by people who love print for people that love magazines. It has a curated feel that speaks to creating something with care, an irreverance about food and life that echoes Lucky Peach and it's all wrapped in the forever fascinating and delicious world of Chinese cuisine. We love it. That would be the quick answer. The truth is that something like this magazine and what it does for people should be changing all the time. This could be a place to find out what theater shows to see or new restaurants that have opened. In truth, those are integral parts to living in a city. But we don't just live in any city. Ningbo isn't one of the huge megacities like Shanghai (at least for now), there aren't unending copies of the same events (again, one can foolishly hope it would stay that way), yet it isn't completely rural, and somehow no one ever hears about it before they move here. It's a lot easier to define what Ningbo isn't and I'd like to think that using this magazine to help you get the most out of living in Ningbo would follow a similar line of thinking. The best answer may be what this magazine is for this month, because that may very well change next month. And that lack of definition should be the point. If you'd like to take your adventure off your plate and journey west, Daniel Pigeon gave us a quick guide about how to get to Tibet. There is a ghostly lostness to his images where landscapes change and prayers sit lumped in piles of flags. Looking at the photo talks about what it would be like to stand there. People will always say that you need a tour guide to go to Tibet, and on one level that's true. But on another it isn't, and the plateau is just the beginning. And if you like your journeys to be more cerebral and contemplative, It's Never Too Late is the title of our monthly column from Jinx detailing the continued relevancy of Ancient Chinese philosophy and the pervasiveness of WeChat. There are other great stories this month. They are made by people in Ningbo and they are a collection of our life by us. And we thank you for collaborating to make it. Asia General Manager, Mr. Niklas Olsson and GM of North China Ms. Heather Yang, joined in the party and event along with many valued clients. The company's staff worked hard to prepare the event, where typical Swedish cookies and drinks were served during in the welcome party. The group also made Swedish specialty dishes for the event in addition to making garlands for all the ladies in attendance. Beginning at 6pm, the hotel hosted its World Cup Theme outdoor party as the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 was in full swing. There were nearly 130 important clients, cooperative partners and media guests invited to the event. The theme party was set in the garden of hotel and featured an entrance shaped like a football goal. Guests took photos with a football girl at the entrance. The hotel set yellow, green and blue as its main lighting colors and prepared different flags stickers of various countries for the guests. A live band brought South American sounds and rhythms to the guests. Beyond the dinner buffet, the hotel's General Manager Mr. Weicheng Chan gave an update highlighting the latest promotions, including an announcement that the hotel's Thai Restaurant will be opening soon. Along with the introduction of the hotel s management team, staff also organized a quiz and lucky draw between performances; a pleasant surprise for guests. I have reduced one of my employee s salaries from RMB 11,000 to RMB 8,000 after May 2014; his social insurance is still paid based on the RMB 11,000. Shouldn t his social insurance be adjusted to the new salary of RMB 8,000? The Social Security Bureau in China's municipalities stipulates that social insurance bases may only be adjusted once a year, often during the second quarter of every year. Hangzhou, as in other cities in China, there are only two main types of labour contracts: a fixed-term contract and an open-term contract. Other types of contracts include job contracts and part-time contracts, which can only be used in limited circumstances. A fixed-term contract can be of any length of time (with the legally permissible probation period depending on length of time) but can only be renewed once; on the occasion of the second renewal the contract effectively becomes an open-term contract, which is very difficult to terminate. 16 NINGBO GUIDE JULY

Am I allowed to have two separate employment contracts? How would it affect my individual income tax (IIT) in both China and the U.S.? your current situation in both China and the U.S., it could be possible to have two separate employment contracts. The Chinese subsidiary will enter into an employment contract with you and pay a salary which is appropriate for the seniority & experience of your position, as well as the level of your Chinese duties. The Chinese subsidiary will withhold IIT on this amount. 18 OUT LINE Images & Text // Martin Hultberg Mountain life in north east China Living in Ningbo I rarely get to see life outside or our modern city. But in the end of June I was lucky to be asked to shoot a music video in the deep mountains of the North East part of China. It was non-stop work from early morning to late evening, but I managed to sneak away between takes to meet some of the local people living in the surrounding beautiful mountains. Most of them were farmers making their money growing corn on the mountain hills and selling it in the local village. As always, being a guest in China I was greeted with warmth and hospitality. The villagers I met invited me to sit down and talk, drink tea or try their local food. At the end of the meeting I asked them If I could take their photo. I love taking photos of people not used to cameras or being photographed because they dont know how to pose. Instead you get something real and timeless, far away from our smartphone selfies. Some of the villagers were shy at first and others laughing. They were not being used to be the center of attention. But I am so happy they were.

28 FEAT URE THE CLEAVER QUARTERLY We caught up with the three founders of the new food and culture publication that uses Chinese food as a way to talk about nearly everything. Aptly named, The Cleaver Quarterly takes a cuisine that is simulataneously pervasive and diverse, ubiquitous and specialized, pedestrian and imperial and uses that as a way to really begin to understand what is to eat, what is to eat Chinese food. Editors Lilly Chow, Jonathan White, and Iain Shaw are bringing together the kind of magazine that magazine people like. It is a place where print is still king and the paper matters. Think of this as a collection of stories, images, recipes and history that culminates in a thought out and meaningful way to navigate the unimaginablely large world of Chinese food, the diaspora and homeland constantly reinventing it, and the legions of sinophiles struggling with some of the deepest paradoxes in food and reveling in a cuisine that is never dull. There s so much more to say about Chinese food all over the world but nobody is saying it. We took it as our mission to change that. What made you start this magazine? Being in the magazine business is absolutely a labor of love. So what did you see that didn t exist before The Cleaver Quarterly? Jonathan White: We all worked together in the magazine business before starting The Cleaver Quarterly, so absolutely a labor of love might imply that this project is strictly amateur, which is not the case. Last summer, myself and Lilly left the Beijinger magazine ( We didn t want that to be the last magazine we ever made, so starting something of our own seemed a natural progression. Frankly, Chinese food was the obvious choice, given that Chinese is the biggest cuisine in the world. We felt that there were a lot of stories that would never get published anywhere else. Iain Shaw: In our home countries, a lot of Chinese menus don t stray far beyond sweet and sour chicken, and beef and mushroom. A lot of writing about Chinese food follows that same tendency. There s so much more to say about Chinese food all over the world but nobody is saying it. We took it as our mission to change that. Lilly Chow: Good writing (in English) about Chinese food traditions and practices does exist, but until now, it has been piecemeal and scattered. We want to bring it all together. We want to connect the dots. Because the popularity of Chinese food is global and has been for centuries, our goal is to juxtapose China's regional cuisines with the diasporic offshoots to show that they are kissing cousins in a sprawling, boisterous family. Also, we love storytelling and deep-dive longform as much as we love Chinese food, so we re excited about using The Cleaver Quarterly as a platform to discover and showcase writers who feel the same. What will The Cleaver Quarterly be able to bring to the table so to speak that will change how people look at Chinese food? LC: We want our readers to be pleasantly overwhelmed by how much more there is to Chinese food than they had ever imagined. We want them to see Chinese food as a lifelong mission: to sample as much as they can, whether that means supporting local restaurants that dare to offer something different or trying out recipes in their own kitchens. Let me say, though, that we re not trying to anoint ourselves as a super-authority on Chinese food. (How would that even work, with only four issues per year?) However, the scope of the topics we cover should and will be as global and comprehensive as possible. IS: We will introduce people to dishes they ve never heard of before, but know they re going to love and then tell them the stories behind those dishes. Visually, we ll have a style that people don t associate with Chinese food. Too much coverage of Chinese food still comes with the bamboo font, the conical hat and a big splash of red. It s old. It s clichéd. It s not fun. It should be fun, because it s fun to eat.

32 Speaking of day jobs for a moment, what are yours? LC: All three of us work as copy editors in Chinese state media, but I ll be taking some time off to concentrate on the magazine. Can the three of you give us a little background on yourselves? How long have you been in China and how good is your Chinese? But seriously, how did you end up here and why? JW: I came out to coach soccer after being rejected by the Foreign Office and not really knowing what to do in England. I planned on staying a year. That was the start of LC: I moved to Beijing seven years ago. Practical reason: You can still earn a decent wage here as a copy editor. Emotional reason: China runs in my blood. IS: I came to China because I wanted to work abroad and learn another language, and because I d never met anybody who d been here before. I also thought I d get the chance to try the best beef chow mein in the world. Turns out that was what I left behind. On to the food, do you remember having a Chinese dish where you were like, Shut the Front Door that is good!? What was it? And why was it so good? LC: I always have that reaction to the first bite of charsiu cheong fun (Cantonese rice noodle rolls with BBQ pork) when it s freshly steamed and gooey-stretchy. IS: Shuizhu yu, big chunks of fish coated in spicy oil. Once I learned how to eat it without piercing my throat with a fishbone, it was a revelation. Nothing like it back home. JW: Peking Duck has long been my favourite dish, ever since I was a kid. British-Chinese cuisine may not be the most exciting food but getting a Chinese takeaway was always a treat. Going to an actual restaurant was even more special. As time has gone on, my exposure has been much wider and more far-reaching but as blown away as I was by Xinjiang and proper Sichuan and Beijing street food and everything else, every time I go home, we ll get a Chinese carryout and it s still a great dining experience. Those kinds of strong feelings are exactly why I wanted to make this magazine. When people come to visit you, where do you take them to eat and for what? Do you have a This is amazing you have to eat this before you die. dish? JW: Depends on who comes to visit. I m all for getting a few different duck experiences in. Hot pot, too. IS: There s a place in Beijing called Najia Xiaoguan that s my top place for guests. They serve Beijing- Manchu cuisine, with quite a few dishes that you don t see elsewhere. JW: There s nothing that I won t eat but I try to avoid anything where mushrooms or tofu are the main part of the dish. They re not really for me. Having said that, I am expecting to undertake a week of eating nothing but tofu for a future magazine feature. LC: Oysters. IS: Not into lotus root at all. Everyone else seems to think it s great. I m suspicious of it. Who is The Cleaver Quarterly for? What are the main audiences you re hoping to engage with? Are they primarily professional chefs, amateur cooks, weekend gastronomes, lovers of General Tso s Chicken? JW: To steal from ODB, The Cleaver Quarterly is for the children. Chinese food is such a massive topic so I m curious how you came up with a way to break it down into sections? IS: We decided early on that sections would be restrictive. It s been one of the best decisions we ve made. 36 NINGBO GUIDE JULY

37 Looking to find out more about the magazine like where to get it, what excellent recipes to cook, or how globally pervasive Chinese food is? This statistic is not only true, it's mind boggling, according Jennifer 8 Lee, "There are more Chinese restaurants in the US than McDonald's, Burger King and KFC combined." Find them online at LC: As an indie quarterly, we have the luxury of keeping TCQ quite free-form to give ourselves maximum flexibility in commissioning and accepting pieces from contributors. We re not in a hurry to set up any regular columns. We want a good balance of text to visuals, of course, and we are ever-mindful not to allow any one region or country to be overrepresented in an issue. The need for balance also applies to historical vs. contemporary, fast food vs. homestyle vs. gourmet, interviews vs. essays, etc. JW: Given our previous experience producing an events/listings magazine, what we are most excited about is the absolute freedom that The Cleaver Quarterly offers. If we wanted to feature 17,000 words of poetry on Chinese trucks delivering produce to the city, then we could. The main criteria are: Do we think it s interesting? and Does including this piece mean we can t run a similar piece in the same issue? We want to be representative of the world of Chinese cuisine, so we are aiming to get a balance between the written and the visual, the serious and the lighthearted, inside of China and outside of China, and so on. For Issue 1, we think we did OK but we can do better. We want to get a proper global feel to it, and continue to up the diversity of voices that we feature. How can people help with your Kickstarter account or otherwise? What are the ways that people can get involved and help? JW: The Kickstarter support blew us away. We were hopeful that we weren t mad to pursue this project, but the kindness of our backers and their decision to spend their hardearned money on The Cleaver Quarterly was vindication for the months and months of late nights and lost sleep. The magazine is now available on our website (thecleaverquarterly. com) but all of the cool Kickstarter rewards were limited-edition and will remain so. IS: Kickstarter was a great success we exceeded our funding goal and then raised more money at our Ice Cream Shakeup, a competition where all the contestants had to make an ice cream flavor with a Chinese twist. LC: Now that our Kickstarter campaign is over, we re fully focused on making a great magazine. Writers, photographers, illustrators, send us your pitches! People love the what would you eat for a last meal? question, any dying wishes in the Chinese food department? LC: My mom s eggrolls with rice porridge. JW: I d want several last meals but the last would be on a streetside with some longneckers and chuanr. I d be happy going out as the dawn comes up on that. From the majestic landscapes of rolling grasslands against a backdrop of jagged, snow-capped mountains to the tranquil stoicism of the indigenous people and culture, Tibet is truly an enthralling place. Compared to more popular travel destinations like Thailand or Malaysia, relatively few travelers make the journey to the rooftop of the world. 40 Beyond the TAR The Tibetan Plateau, with an average elevation of about 4,500 meters (15,000 feet), is an expanse of harsh terrain that covers some 2.5 million square kilometers--roughly one-fifth of the land mass of China--and extends well beyond the borders of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). Tibet is traditionally comprised of three major regions: Ü-Tsang, Kham, and Amdo. For foreigners, travel to the TAR requires a special permit and independent travel is strictly forbidden. This means either joining a tour group or hiring a private tour guide. This prefecture is in Kham, and it is said to be the heart and soul of the region. The nearest major city to Garze is Chengdu, making it the most common starting point for a trip to Kham. Buses run daily from Chengdu to Kanding, the capital of Garze, which makes for a good first leg of the journey. Kanding is a quaint town of about 100,000 people, lying in a valley at 2,500 m with several rivers roaring through the middle of town. The turquoise hue of these glacierfed waterways accent the streets as the incessant sound of rushing water fills every pocket of town. In many ways, Kanding acts as the unofficial gateway to Tibet. Lying on the border of the Tibetan Plateau with a unique blend of Tibetan and Sichuanese cultures, it is the perfect place to spend a few nights acclimating to the higher altitude before continuing on to more remote locations. Westernstyle coffehouses dot the town s main square, providing a place for those returning from a trek to offer travel advice to those preparing to embark on one. Kanding also has several monasteries that are well worth the visit. JULY 2014 NINGBO GUIDE 45

50 Litang--Beauty in the Void From Kanding, many travelers end up heading directly west to the town of Litang. Only a portion of the roads are paved between the two, there is often construction, and, at many points, the road is too narrow for traffic to move both directions at the same time. The hairpin turns around 5000 meter mountains on gravel roads would be much more unsettling if the scenery of the rocky peaks of the Himalayan hills and colorful prayer flags wasn t so utterly stunning. Sitting at more than 4000 m (13,000 ft), Litang is a dusty town of dirt roads surrounded by vast plains. The town is well-known for its annual horse racing festival that takes place every summer. Tibetans travel from all over to compete in the event, or just to showcase their prized stallions. The men wear their hair in long, traditional braids with brightly-colored ties; large, loosely-fitting cloaks of yak wool; hats and boots made of leather true cowboys, if there ever were such a thing. The women don gorgeous gowns of every conceivable color, with beautiful Tibetan jewelry gracing their wrists, necks, and ears. The horse racing doesn t seem to be a competition as much as a preservation of culture and an opportunity for Tibetans to gather with old friends and family. Outside of Litang, grasslands consume the landscape. There are herds of yaks grazing and a few yurts belonging to the nomadic shepherds that look after them, but mostly there is nothing and the volume of nothingness is the most staggering thing of all. Much of the beauty of the Tibetan Plateau lies in the absence of things, rather than in their presence. These grasslands also provide a great place to hike and camp for a few nights. Horseback riding and homestays in the traditional yak-skin yurts can be arranged without too much trouble. After Litang, one may head south to the Tibetan prefectures of Yunnan province, or north toward Qinghai. If heading north, a long day s journey will put in you in Garze (a town by the same name as the prefecture). Despite being a town of about 10,000 people, Garze can keep you busy for several days, as it has an enormous, 600-year-old monastery with an estimated 1,000 monks studying there. 54 Sertar--The Essence of Buddhism About 30km north of a tiny town called Sertar, in a valley surrounded by absolutely nothing, lies a massive sprawl of tiny box-like houses built into the sides of the hills. This is Larung Gar, and it is one of the most influential Buddhist centers of education in the world. With population estimates of up to 40,000 people, it is also the largest. Besides the few temples for worship and study, there only are thousands of small homes for monks to reside. Meals are cooked in massive quantities and dispersed three times a day free for the monks and three or four RMB for visitors. There are only a handful of small hostels for backpackers from which to choose. The simplicity of the lifestyle at Larung Gar reminds you of the principles by which the monks all around you are vowing to live their lives. Visiting the temples, sitting in on prayer circles, or even attending ceremonies is much easier than you might think the monks are remarkably friendly and welcoming. While a few days visit to Larung Gar may not reveal exactly what it s like to be a Buddhist monk, it s probably about the closest thing a backpacker could hope for. It is quite a surreal experience. No matter the region you visit or the route you choose, a journey to Tibet will be an epic one. It may not be the same sort of relaxing vacation as a visit to a tropical island, and it is certainly not a weekend getaway, but the journey to Tibet is rejuvenating in a different sense. It is one that leaves you feeling centered, with a clear mind and sense of enlightenment. 54 NINGBO GUIDE JULY

Rest assured that as long as they're in season, you'll be able to grab a yangmei lemonade in Gu Lou and truly embrace the flavor of a Ningbo summer. Seasonal fruit-inspired drinks and dishes are a recurring theme at Traveller's Coffee, which also offers tartelettes made from the stuff in addition to their year-round selections. Be on the lookout for a sweet and tangy yangmei tartelette, most likely for a very limited time. As with the drinks, Traveller's dining menu offers a diverse selection of sandwiches, wraps and other food choices. The fare is, for the most part, light, healthy and very international. There are a number of panini options for those in search of a hot, melty, pressed sandwich. Wraps, such as the Chicken Pesto Wrap offer a little less bread and a slightly cooler option. 67 EAT WELL TRAVEL OFTEN place where everyone can find what they're after. One such option is the particularly tasty pumpkin hummus wrap, which would please even the most carnivorous among us. Desserts are also heavily featured in the Traveller's menu, going above and beyond the typical coffee shop offerings of barely passable tiramisu and lighter-than-air cheesecake. The American owners and management ensure that each dessert is prepared exactly as it should be. In addition to the previously-mentioned tartelettes, there are a myriad of choices to indulge one's sweet tooth. The shop also offers up its own take on macarons, those colorful little almond cakes which are seemingly everywhere in Ningbo at the moment. These are also quite tasty. However the star is the cheesecake, which is clearly made by someone who understands that the real stuff should double as a paperweight and taste like pure, creamy bliss. Oh, and the coffee is pretty darn good as well. Traveller's Coffee is quickly working towards opening its second Ningbo location in Tian Yi Square. Prof. Michael Puett, Harvard University In the course of our conversations I have asked each of these young people what books they read as children and what they suggest I read to understand their culture. It was not surprising that I received uniform answers. I was instructed to read Romance of The Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, The Dream of Red Chamber, The Water Margin- all part of "Four Great Masterpieces" regarded by Chinese literary criticism to be the greatest of pre-modern Chinese fiction. Each of the young people also urged me to study Confucius. Still no surprise, Chinese philosophy is the back bone of China, duh The surprise came when their discussions of Confucius and other Chinese philosophers echoed the voices of some American students and each side of the ocean spoke with a refreshing and very personal understanding of Chinese philosophy. Instead of repeating the Confucius talking points of personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, and justice and sincerity- the students spoke about their search for a new way of being in the world that was counter-intuitive to their respective cultures and parents. As I threw out questions on our group WeChat the responses were buzzing with a candor that astonished me. My young Chinese friends were bemoaning the pressure they feel as they are pushed into very explicit paths towards very concrete career goals. All of their classwork and extracurricular activities were focused towards prearranged goals and plans that could produce a good income. All of their personal life was orchestrated to find a marriage partner and a house suitable to their parents and all of them were afraid of becoming trapped on an imprudent path. We are calm on the outside but spinning inside, one young Chinese woman admitted. A few months ago a friend at a private American university had said nearly the same thing. He was lamenting the fact that his parents didn t want him to study humanities, a trend seen across American liberal arts schools. Now, here in China I was hearing the same. A twenty year old student in X ian remonstrated They want me to go into engineering, computer science, financing or medicine. They say I am not practical! And then they tell me I must get married soon, too! What has this to do with Confucius? I asked. The WeChat group sent out a flurry of responses. Here are a few: Confucius s Analects and Tao Te Ching tell us the little things have importance. Little things can grow. 74 action can have a ripple effect. Pay attention to little things that make you smile. Don t be so practicalplans not always so good. In Chinese, word for mind and heart same thing but parents and teachers forget this. Daoist tell us we should be open and spontaneous to each day. Instead we have to close ourselves off and follow the rules. Marry or don t marry. Be happy if have house or not. Good decisions should come without stress. I only have stress. Not good. Everyone has big plan. Why must I stick to a plan? Apparently my friends had learned all this from reading Chinese philosophers and they were not the only young people learning such sweeping ideas that questioned the status quo in their cultures. American students were doing the same at Harvard. A comical looking professor of Asian Studies named Michael Puett was teaching the third most popular class at the university and its purpose was to deconstruct the whole notion of The Plan (as created by Western thought). He was enticing his students to explore new ways of thinking by studying old traditions that could be re-invented to shatter the world of complacency that they had inherited and diffuse the narcissism and self-centeredness permeating their lives. The society he explores is China, 2,500 years ago and he uses Chinese philosophy to offer his students a better life. Michael Puett isn t shy about the mess his generation has left for the young. He believes that our present world view cannot begin to solve the economic, political and environmental crises that threaten our existence. Either today s youth will be overwhelmed by it all, and all will be lost, or they will learn new ways of organizing the world, allow ancient traditions to invigorate their thinking and embrace the fact that there is no one way to do anything. His classes require the close reading of original texts such as Confucius s Analects, the Mencius, and the Daodejing and then actively put the teachings into practice in their daily lives. His lectures use Chinese thought in the context of contemporary American life to help young adults who are struggling to find their place in the world figure out how to be good human beings; how to create a good society; how to have a flourishing life. He has a daring promise: This course will change your life. 77 Puett began offering his course to introduce his students not just to a completely different cultural worldview but also to a different set of tools. He told me he is seeing more students who are feeling pushed onto a very specific path towards very concrete career goals than he did when he began teaching nearly 20 years ago. Puett sees students who orient all their courses and even their extracurricular activities towards practical, predetermined career goals and plans. Puett tells his students that being calculating and rationally deciding on plans is precisely the wrong way to make any sort of important life decision. The Chinese philosophers they are reading would say that this strategy makes it harder to remain open to other possibilities that don t fit into that plan. Students who do this are not paying enough attention to the daily things that actually invigorate and inspire them, out of which could come a really fulfilling, exciting life, he explains. If what excites a student is not the same as what he has decided is best for him, he becomes trapped on a misguided path, slated to begin an unfulfilling career. Puett aims to open his students eyes to a different way to approach everything from relationships to career decisions. It is uncanny how literally my young Chinese friends echoed Professor Puett s sentiments in our WeChat conversations. They had never heard of Puett, and some perhaps Harvard, but they were earnestly searching for a new path and finding direction in Chinese philosophy. On both sides of the ocean young people were learning that the smallest actions have the most profound ramifications and they were trying to notice how they react and feel doing ordinary things. Mencius, a late Confucian thinker (4th century B.C.E.), taught that if you cultivate your better nature in these small ways, you can become an extraordinary person with an incredible influence, altering your own life as well as that of those around you, until finally you can turn the whole world in the palm of your hand. Zhuangzi, a Daoist philosopher, instilled that we should train ourselves to become spontaneous through ordinary moments, rather than using rational decision-making. Through our everyday activities we train ourselves to become more open to experiences so that ultimately our responses and decisions come spontaneously from a thinking heart. Neuroscience research is confirming that the Chinese philosophers are correct and brain scans reveal that our unconscious awareness of emotions and phenomena around us are actually what drive the decisions we believe we are making with logic and rationality. The Chinese philosophers we read taught that the way to really change lives for the better is from a very mundane level, changing the way people experience and respond to the world, so what I try to do is to hit them at that level. I m not trying to give my students really big advice about what to do with their lives. I just want to give them a sense of what they can do daily to transform how they live. To be interconnected, focus on mundane everyday practices, and understanding that great things begin with the very smallest of acts are radical ideas for young people living in a society that pressures them to think big and achieve individual excellence. says Puett. Chinese philosophy reminds us not too think too narrowly about our capabilities and to trust in our ability to develop new skills beyond our original endowments. We do not have to follow a path that does not excite us. Our interests should guide us more than our aptitudes and training can overcome our natural endowments. My young friends on Wechat are worried. They are worried they will have to ignore their desires, their hungers, and their interests to fulfill The Plan. They are worried that they will disappoint their parents if they do not follow The Plan. They are worried that careers and marriage will leave them feeling empty. They are worried that they will not learn how to take risks. They are worried they will not learn how to fly. They are worried that it is already too late. I WeChat my young friends: It is never too late. I whisper this again to myself for myself. I whisper it to the great Chinese philosophy teachers in the hopes their voices can be heard. I whisper it to my young friends in America. I go to bed thinking of each of them and hoping that indeed, it is not too late for all of us. JULY 2014 NINGBO GUIDE 77
