Previously we had built in a little cushion to accommodate procrastinators. From now on What You See, Is What You Get. The Hotel Contract and our Contract with Armed Forces Reunions both state that reservations must be in their hands by Thursday, September 6th to be able to guarantee your spot. As in the past, tour reservations may be limited to a first come first served basis. Please remember, we have a very liberal cancellation policy. So reserve early and cancel out at a later date if you find you cannot make the reunion. Membership Dues Are Now Due For 2007 Are Your Dues Paid??? If you find any errors in the directory, either of your or a shipmate s information, please let Ken Minick know so that the database may be corrected. TREA Reunion Site The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) provides a Military Reunion Listing as a FREE service to the veteran community. They had 1,398 listings on the calendar year 2006 listing. With the next listing update, they will have over 500 reunion listings for calendar years 2007, 2008, and 2009, including that of the USS Canberra. Please take a look at their web site, scroll down the left side and click on Reunions/Buddies, and this will bring up their reunion page. When Bryan took over from Paul and after Ken took over from Bryan, many crewmembers wanted to be assured that things would not change in the way the Association was ran. That is why 9819 we continue to have the Friday night Buffet and the Saturday night Banquet. When it was announced that we were going to Nashville in 2007, several people asked if we could change the night of the Buffet so that we could attend the Friday Night Grand Ole Opry show. We asked the hotel if this would be possible. Unfortunately, the answer was NO. The only day that we could have changed it to, Thursday, was already taken with another group s function. Your Reunion Organizers have learned a valuable lesson. Although we will continue to have both a Buffet and Banquet, we will look closely at all of the activities that we may want to attend before locking in on the Friday Buffet/Saturday Banquet and signing the contract with the hotel. This year we will still have the buffet on Friday, but at an earlier time. This will enable our crewmembers to attend the most popular attraction in Nashville, The Grand Ole Opry, at its Friday night show. Find Your Telephone Number Starting in the Winter 92 Issue of the "Members of the Crew" newsletter, a randomly selected 4 digit number was placed somewhere in the newsletter. The number published will be the last four digits, in sequence, of an active members home telephone number at the time of publication. It could be shown in a written form as nine nine nine nine or the numeric form of It will always be four numbers in length. It will always be a number hidden in a sentence and will never make sense. If you identify the number as the last four digits of your home telephone number as recorded in our files, and advise me within 30 days of the postmark on the newsletter, I will credit your annual dues with a one year membership. Bryan Humphrey was contacted by the Navy Memorial and asked if we wanted a USS Canberra plaque placed in Paul s honor. Ken Minick was apprised of this recently when the Navy Memorial contacted him. Since Paul was a WWII sailor, he felt it best that the Canberra depicted be the WWII version. Therefore, the plaque pictured here will soon be placed in the Navy Memorial. Exact duplicates of the plaque, mounted on a hardwood base suitable for hanging or exhibiting on a desk, can be purchased from the Navy Memorial for $125, shipping included. The size of all of the plaques at the Memorial is 3.75 by 7 inches. For more information on plaque purchases contact Ken Minick. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY FOR ARMED FORCES REUNIONS, INC. For attendees canceling reunion activities prior to the cut-off date, Armed Forces Reunions, Inc. (AFR) shall process a full refund less the non-refundable AFR registration fee ($5 per person). Attendees canceling reunion activities after the cut-off date will be refunded to the fullest extent that AFR s vendor commitments and guarantees will allow, less the non-refundable AFR registration fee. Cancellations will only be taken Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 5:00pm Eastern Standard Time, excluding holidays. 6 TOUR DESCRIPTIONS JACK DANIEL S DISTILLERY Thursday, October 11 The Tennessee countryside comes alive on this tour. View the spectacular vistas of Middle Tennessee as we travel from Nashville to Jack Daniel s Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in the U.S. Also included is the famous Jack Daniel s Barbecue on the Hill. The function includes barbecue buffet complete with all the fixins, Jack Daniel s and mixers, beer, and of course the famous Jack Daniel s Band (to get your toes tappin ). **Please note: there is a 50-person minimum for this tour** 9:00am board bus, 3:30pm back at hotel $66/Person includes bus, escort, admission, and lunch. OR HERMITAGE MANSION Thursday, October 11 Tour the Hermitage Mansion, home of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. Only the Jackson family has lived here and 90% of the furnishings are original. Inside the mansion, view the elliptical grand staircase, with its complex half-flying suspension. Walk through Rachel's Garden, which contains a variety of shrubs and flowering plants typical of the time period. The tour also includes Tulip Grove, the Greek Revival mansion built by President Jackson as a residence for his personal secretary. There is a walk (approximately 3 blocks) from where buses will unload to the Mansion. Please wear comfortable shoes! 9:15am board bus, 12:15pm back at hotel $41/Person includes bus, escort, and admission. CITY TOUR Friday, October 12 Begin a tour of Nashville with trained professional guides who will entertain your group with interesting facts, colorful legends, and amusing anecdotes of Nashville and her people. Drive by the Governor's Mansion, as well as homes of several well-known personalities such as Tammy Wynette, Ronnie Milsap, and Minnie Pearl. Drive through Centennial Park and view the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the original in Greece. Visit the Ryman Auditorium, where the Grand Ole Opry got its start. Originally a church, the Ryman is now home to numerous musical productions. Stop on 2nd Avenue for lunch on your own at one of several different restaurants. Consider Market Street Brewery, Big River Grille, Hard Rock Cafe, or the Wild Horse Saloon. 9:00am board bus, 2:00pm back at hotel $44/Person includes bus, guide, and admission. Lunch on your own. GRAND OLE OPRY Friday, October 12 Board bus for the Grand Ole Opry. Country's grandest show begins: a live country music radio program that is aired from the Grand Ole Opry House. The Opry has not missed a Saturday broadcast since it began in 1925; it is the longest-running live radio show in the world. Sit back and enjoy an American Institution at its entertaining best. 7:00pm board bus, 11:00pm back at hotel $62/Person includes bus, escort, and show. GENERAL JACKSON LUNCH CRUISE Saturday, October 13 Board bus for the General Jackson Riverboat, the world's largest showboat.
