3 FROM THE PRESIDENTS PEN This is one week I wish we could rewind; or better still, wish it did not happen.the most wellknown member of the Whangarei Returned and Services Association passed away on Tuesday evening at the Whangarei Hospital surrounded by family. Mr. Dixon, No, Archie, you will be missed by so many people throughout New Zealand, from the average person on the streets, young or old, through to some of the New Zealand s top politicians. Our condolences go out to the family - as was written on a whiteboard in his hospital room; Archie was a loved brother of nine, an uncle of 29, great uncle of 66 and a great-great uncle of 48, together with their respective partners. A large part of Archie s life has been dedicated to New Zealand s Armed Forces, of which he spent a good portion of his time deeply involved with us. His time with the New Zealand Armed Forces commenced back in 1955 when he enlisted in the NZ Army under the CMT training scheme and worked his way up to eventually retire with the rank of Major in Archie has been awarded the NZ Operational Service Medal, United Nations Medals, the New Zealand armed Forces Award and the New Zealand Defence Service Medal. He spent time in Palestine, Singapore and the Antarctic. He joined the Whangarei RSA in 1974 whilst serving as Army Area Officer for Northland and became the President in He spent a total of 6 terms as Vice President and President of the Whangarei RSA. Additional to that he has also been involved with the Northland District Executive, Patriotic Board and National Council in Wellington. His contribution to the Whangarei RSA has been exceptional. Archie instigated the Field of Remembrance which is now recognised occurrence throughout New Zealand, carried out research on most of the Monuments to WWI and WWII throughout Northland, was the leading person along with the WDC in the relocation of the Cenotaph from Rose Street, and was instrumental in establishing the new Whangarei District War Memorial at Laurie Hall Park on behalf of the families of the war dead of Whangarei. A major achievement was challenging the proposed sale and demolition of the Harding Army Hall in Whangarei, which has been preserved under the provisions of the Historic Places Trust. These are to name but a few of his achievements - the list goes on. This man meant a great deal too many people from many all walks of life. He would stop and talk to anyone, young and old. He lived to help others was committed to the RSA family and his service to and for the Veterans and elderly is unsurpassed. You could ask Archie speak to a group, and without hesitation he would enthral those present with details that he had stored in that brain of his. He was an eloquent and entertaining orator, but always spoke very highly and respectfully on the Veterans requirements. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, or knew of him. Personally, I have lost a man that I could always rely on for a straight forward answer, it usually took about half an hour, but always fully reasoned and full of ALL the information required. Archie, on behalf of all the members of all RSA s in New Zealand, we thank you. Rest in Peace my friend. The funeral service will take place at 1030hrs at Christ Church, 2 Kamo Road Regent, on Saturday October the 6 th. An interment will follow at the Maunu Cemetery later that day. 4 SECTION NEWS Darts Bull etin Club Nights Wednesday Format Drawn Pairs Names in by 7:15pm Play Starts 7:30pm What s Happened & What s Coming up We played the Annual Drawn Trios on Saturday the 22 nd of September. While attendance was down on past years we still attracted some very good players. We had an awesome day of darts. Congratulations to all who played and to those who walked away with a prize. Due to Archie Dixon s Funeral Service being scheduled for Saturday the 6 th of October the Men s 2018 Singles Club Champs has been deferred until an alternative date can be confirmed. Unfortunately no results were available. This will be followed by our annual prize giving. As usual anyone interested in joining the Rifle Club are welcome to come along on your Club Night.
