1 Description of 2017 Gorman Heritage Farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH Welcome to the 2017 Gorman Heritage Farm CSA! A CSA is a way for a consumer to buy local, seasonal, naturally grown foods directly from their farmer. Members receive a share of the garden s produce every week in exchange for their support. This is our seventh year running a CSA, and as always, one learns from past years how to do it better. We are a non-profit organization and we rely heavily on volunteers. In fact, our volunteers logged about 19,477 hours in 2016 doing work in the barnyard, in all four of our gardens, at special events, at our front desk, on the annual quilt and performing other various activities. Because so many people choose Gorman Heritage Farm to give their volunteers hours, we offer two pricing structures for our CSA. Cost: $545 plus 30 hours of volunteer time, or $695 without volunteering. We charge everyone the full amount upfront and refund $150 at the end of the season if 30 volunteer hours have been completed. We will refund $5.00 per hour of volunteer work up to 30 hours. Payments can be made in as many as three installments and are due March 15th, April 15th, and May 15th. Payments can be made by check, cash, Visa or Mastercard. Duration: 26 weeks from the first full week in May through the month of October. There will be no CSA prepared for July 5th since the staff will be off for the July 4th holiday. Those Wednesday CSA members will receive their last CSA box on November 1st. Amount of food: Generally, the amount of food is good for a family of two. This depends, of course, on how many meals are prepared at home. Our goal is to include about $ worth of vegetables and some in-season fruit in each weekly share. Due to the unpredictable nature of gardening, we do not always meet the $18 goal, especially early in the season before the growing season is in full swing, but we try to make up the difference throughout the season. The 2016 average share amount was $ We do NOT offer half shares. Some of our members split the food weekly with a friend, or find someone with whom to share the CSA and arrange to pick up on alternate weeks. Please let us know if you are interested in sharing with a friend. We do keep names of people who want a CSA partner, and we might be able to help you connect. Pick-up: Pick up your CSA at our Interpretive Building at Reading Road. We offer either Wednesday (4-6PM) or Saturday (10-12PM) pick-up options. Generally the shares are not ready before the listed times, so please do not arrive early. We try to offer the same number of

2 shares for both pick-up days, so please be prepared to be flexible if we offer you a different pick-up day. We are able to store your CSA in our Coolbot if you are unable to pick up during the times offered. Our Coolbot is an outdoor refrigerated shed that is not locked, located behind the building. We offer this as a convenience for our members, but if you utilize our Coolbot, please keep in mind that this is a shared space. We use the Coolbot to store the next harvest and having room for the gardeners to maneuver is important. Please pick up your CSA at your earliest time possible. Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly! Sign-up: The previous year s CSA members have first choice for the 2017 CSA. We then offer shares to those on our waiting list at the beginning of February. If you would like to sign up for the CSA, contact Barb (bliphardt@gormanfarm.org) to be added to the waiting list. New in 2017: - In addition to other new types of produce, we are excited to grow popcorn in 2017! - We are adding an Up for Grabs box during CSA pick-ups. This is a basket placed next to the CSA boxes on pick-up day where extra veggies will be located. For example, if we have a surplus amount of one item, we will put the extras in the box, and you can take it if you would like more of that item! If you receive too much of a veggie or if you receive a veggie you don t care for, you can place it in the box, too. Take what you want, leave what you don t. Our goal is for members to adjust their own shares and control how much excess they receive. - All of our CSA letters and recipes throughout the season will be available in an online resource for you to access, instead of paper recipes in your box. - Reducing the number of shares from 40 to 35 to better ensure quantity and selection of produce for our members. - We are going to try growing a small area of sweet corn. Foods grown: Spring garden-a variety of lettuces; spinach; arugula; carrots; turnip greens; turnips; mustard greens; a variety of kale; radishes; beets; cabbage; Swiss chard; onions; snow peas; cilantro; and a limited amount of asparagus. Summer garden-a variety of tomatoes; radishes; green beans; wax beans; edamame (soy beans); beets; carrots; cucumbers (maybe); dill; parsley; cilantro; eggplant; garlic; okra; sweet and hot peppers; potatoes; summer squash (maybe); basil Fall garden-sweet potatoes; winter squash (maybe); turnips; apples (maybe); figs; potatoes; garlic; lettuces; spinach; arugula; kale; Swiss chard; collards; green onions; snow peas; broccoli; cabbage; carrots; and radishes. Additionally, we plan to include popcorn which will be ready in the fall. Considerations: We have difficulties growing cucumbers, melons, summer and winter squash, and pumpkins. We will plant these vegetables and hope we get more than a week s worth of food. If these items are a must in your box, please take this into consideration when deciding to join our CSA.
