7 12 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION NEDERBURG AUCTION Recognised as one of the world s five major wine auctions, the Nederburg Auction offers quality, fine wines that are often only available in limited quantities and not on the open market. Lots are structured to afford buyers the flexibility of purchasing according to their individual volume requirements. The event has a threefold purpose: to encourage greater wine standards; to develop an awareness of South African wine and to ensure fair distribution of fine, rare wines. AUCTION 2013: SHOWCASING AUTHENTICITY The 2013 Nederburg Auction is adding another facet to its already world-renowned benchmark pursuit of unique character, quality and style. This year, the Auction is also actively pursuing greater authenticity in both the user experience and origin of wines on offer. Now in its 39th year, this prestigious event offers a rare opportunity for local and international wine buyers to select, sample and bid on a stringently selected range of wines from the country s premium winemakers, estates and cellars. As the oldest auction in the New World of wine, the Nederburg Auction is a tribute to the endeavours of South African winemakers over three centuries to improve their wines. THEN & NOW At the first Auction in 1975, there were 15 wines on offer from five participants. The average price paid per case equated to R The 2013 collection includes 72 red wines (8 139,75 litres), 36 white wines (3 541,50 litres), one Méthode Cap Classique (13,50 litres), eight dessert wines (267,75 litres) and 15 Fortified wines (486,00 litres). A total of 81 wineries are represented, including debut participants Aaldering, Calitzdorp, Claime d Or, Domaine des Dieux, Haskell Vineyards, Hermanuspietersfontein, Meerlust, Mullineux, Scali and Welgemeend. We have chosen to focus on the theme word authenticity for 2013, not only as a means to highlight the Auction s renewed focus on quality, but also to bring South Africa s Wine of Origin legislation back into the spotlight, alongside the Auction s own unique Seal of Approval that is affixed to all bottles sold at the Auction as a mark of quality and authenticity, says Nederburg Auction manager Dalene Steyn. Its line-up is taking guests on a journey from the cool Coastal Region, through the Breede River Valley, across to the Klein Karoo and down to the Cape South Coast, this year exploring the extensive diversity of South Africa s vineyards, terroir and winemaking expertise. While the Auction Seal of Approval confirms that the wines selected are curated by an international team as the best on offer, the Wine of Origin label confirms that 100% of the grapes from which the wine is made, comes from a specific area. The wine, and hence the experience, is doubly certified as authentic. The Nederburg Auction s aim is simple to facilitate the demand and supply that exists in the icon and fine wine market, through an authentic rare wine platform where wine connoisseurs and winemakers meet to partake in and celebrate a stellar collection of wines that are marked for their quality, rarity and authenticity.

8 14 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION THE NEDERBURG AUCTION SEAL OF APPROVAL Each of the 134 wines that will be sold at the 2013 Nederburg Auction has earned the Auction s Seal of Approval, which is affixed to each bottle as a mark of quality and authenticity. This golden seal is an endorsement and a reassurance for both trade and consumers that these wines represent the pinnacle of rare, properly matured, fine South African wines. Every wine selected for the Nederburg Auction has to fulfill four criteria before it can be deemed worthy to come under the hammer: 1. The Nederburg Auction encourages winemakers to submit wines that they feel represent the pinnacle of their winemaking skills, and which are no longer available anywhere else in order to enhance the rarity factor for the wines that will be auctioned. 2. Wines submitted must generally be at least five years old for red wines and two years old for white wines. WINE OF ORIGIN LEGISLATION AND ITS IMPORTANCE Because the role of origin is so important, an origin control system has for many years been in place in the traditional winelands of Europe, to protect both the producer and consumer. The two factors, which play the most important role in determining the character and quality of a wine, are nature (soil, climate and location) and the human hand (cultivar choice, viticultural practices and winemaking techniques). Of these two, nature is considered to be the more important factor with a greater influence. In certain areas the vine grows better and within the South African wine producing areas, there are differences in soil, climate and location, which causes wines to differ from region to region. If a wine claims origin, it is the statutory regulations, which ensure that the wine really is from that origin. When the term Wine of Origin or the abbreviation WO appears together with the name of a production area, such as Stellenbosch, Durbanville or Robertson on a label, it confirms that 100% of the grapes from which the wine is made, comes from that specific area. 3. Each wine must then pass the exhaustive selection process that sees them overcome character, style, and quality benchmarks, as judged by the panel of wine experts. The selection tasting is conducted blind and the results are audited. Source: Sawis 4. The final consideration is whether the wines will, in the opinion of the selection panel, continue to evolve and mature in order to provide a return on investment for buyers. This unique approach presents buyers with the opportunity to purchase fine, bottle-aged wines that they can sell or serve immediately, confident in the knowledge that the wine will continue to mature and evolve should they wish to extend its shelf life in order to extract additional value.

9 16 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION Auctioneer Anthony Barne MW from Bonhams in London takes up the hammer, for the fourth consecutive year, at the 39th Nederburg Auction. He is only the third auctioneer in the history of the Nederburg Auction to play this vital role, following in the footsteps of the legendary auctioneer Patrick Grubb MW ( ) and Stephan Welz ( ). Anthony Barne joined the wine trade from the Army in 1978 having taken advantage of the endless possibilities for wine tasting during his posting to Gibraltar. He learned his craft in a wine shop in Tunbridge Wells, a town famous for its disgruntled residents, escaping to Burgundy to work at the DomaineThénard and subsequently amongst the straight talking cellar-hands at Seppelt s in South Australia. His career until 1992 was in mail order and wine buying, first with Hicks & Don, where he passed the Master of Wine exam in 1985 and for whom he still acts as buying consultant, and then Harveys of Bristol. Since then he has been a wine auctioneer, currently working for Bonhams in London as UK Head of Wine. As an auctioneer, Anthony s main pre-occupation is with the classic wine regions of France and also Vintage Port and Madeira, but he has many other interests, including Austria and South Africa, for which he is a judge at the Decanter World Wine Awards, Germany, Tokaji and Australia. Anthony says: Visiting wineries in the Cape and writing tasting notes for the Nederburg Auction lots has been a revelation about the quality of wines being produced in South Africa and each visit is eagerly anticipated, whilst meeting the buyers and taking the Auction itself is a real pleasure! About Bonhams Bonhams is a privately owned British auction house and one of the world s oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The Bonhams name is recognised worldwide throughout all sectors of the fine art, antiques and collectors market, with several of its departments established world leaders within their specialist category. Private Collection Wines The Private Collection is a niche category, reserved especially for extraordinary wines available in extremely small quantities literally the last case in a producer s collection. The items included in the Private Collection Wines selection represent the industry s rare, iconic wines. Many of the wines in this collection come from Distell s exclusive underground wine library, called the Tabernacle, which houses a veritable treasure trove of old wine gems that bear testimony to both the winemaking techniques of yesteryear and the exuberant quality of older South African wines. The charity sale offers unusual wine items, many with a high collectable status. While the commercial part of the auction is only open to registered licensees, all guests are encouraged to register for the charity auction by means of a credit card imprint. A bidding paddle will then be issued at registration. The charity auction will be held in the auction hall at the close of the Nederburg Auction on Saturday, 7 September, prior to the luncheon. Please note: Charity items purchased must be paid for on the day of the auction. The onus is on the buyer to collect all items, other than barrel items, at the close of the Saturday programme. (Items can be held by prior arrangement at registration until the purchaser departs for the day). In the case of larger charity items, for example a bottle that is larger than a magnum (1.5 L), that is purchased by a buyer who resides outside of South Africa, it is recommended that the buyer make arrangements to ship the item to the delivery address to ensure safe, secure delivery. Chenin Blanc Collection 1 x 6-bottle collection of 5 star Platter s SA Wine Guide Chenin wines, donated by Ken Forrester on behalf of the Chenin Blanc Association (CBA) This item, sold at last year s Nederburg Auction on the main auction, represents the extensive depth in terms of vineyards, terroir diversity and winemaking expertise of these dedicated Chenin producers. The collection consists of the Beaumont Hope Marguerite 2008, Stellenrust , Botanica Chenin Blanc 2009, The FMC 2006, Nederburg Edelkeur 2009 and Mullineux Straw Wine 2008.

11 20 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION Nederburg 1 X 750 ml bottle Nederburg Cabernet 1963, donated by Alain Vallet from Grays Mauritius When this wine was originally sold at the 1995 Auction, Dave Hughes, wine consultant and writer, described this wine as a style that is very obviously Nederburg. The wine is surprisingly fresh, despite its age. Some initial peppery-ness but with good full-ripe fruit. Incredibly complex with layers of flavour. I wish I had more! Overgaauw 1 X 750 ml bottle 1976 Overgaauw Vintage Port, donated by David van Velden The 1976 Overgaauw Vintage Port was the first release under the Overgaauw label. Overgaauw was also one of the first to produce Port from 100% Portuguese varieties. This Port was made from a field blend of Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Röriz, Souzao and Cornifesto. There is still a lovely youthfulness of ripe cherries and plumbs on the nose. The beautiful almond nutty characters follow through to a honeycomb sweetness on the mid-palate. Drink now to experience a rare 37-year-old Cape Vintage Port. Capitel de Roari Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1 x 15-litre bottle donated by Janåke Johansson, wine importer from Sweden The Luigi Righetti estate is a small family-run winery located in the town of Valgarata, just outside of Marano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. This winery has been producing wines since 1909, and the current owners are the fifth generation of the Righetti family to carry on their wine making tradition. Luigi Righetti is now in his late seventies, and is still involved in the business, assisted by his sons and granddaughter. Along with their Amarone, they produce Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Bianco di Custoza. Simonsig 1 x 9-litre Simonsig Tiara 2004, donated by the Malan Family This is the flagship red wine of Simonsig and reflects the best quality the vintage has delivered. The first Tiara was made in 1990 and upon release in 1992 it was an instant hit being chosen by the Wine of the Month Club as Wine of the Year. The 1997 was the first vintage that had Petit Verdot included in the blend. Made by winemaker Johan Malan, this vintage has won numerous awards: Double Gold Veritas 2005, Silver Fairbairn Capital Trophy Wine Show 2005, Silver International Wine and Spirit Competition 2006, Sliver Monde Selection 2006, Silver Decanter Awards 2006, Bronze International Wine Challenge 2006 and Silver Veritas The wine has a deep black cherry colour. The nose shows ripe blackcurrant and cassis aromas with subtle toasty wood vanilla and cinnamon influence. Delicate crushed berry fruit on the palate, well-balanced by the classic mature tannin structure. The overall impression is elegant with lots of hidden flavour that will emerge with further maturation. Sabi Sabi A three night luxurious wilderness experience at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge for two, donated by Jacques Smit Includes return flights from Johannesburg to Sabi Sabi, meals, all safaris and house selection of drinks. Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, situated in the world renowned Sabi Sands Reserve, was voted the number one Top African Lodge in the World for De Wetshof 1 X 750 ml bottle De Wetshof Bateleur Chardonnay 1998, donated by Danie de Wet The Bateleur is the flagship Chardonnay of the De Wetshof Estate in Robertson, South Africa s pioneer Chardonnay producer. One of the country s oldest Chardonnay vineyards, the Bateleur block is planted on soils rich in limestone,

12 22 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION a key component for the making of elegant, balanced and supremely complex Chardonnay wines. The Bateleur 1998 is one of the finest vintages De Wetshof has produced. Ideal growing conditions ensured superlative grapes and the resultant wine has only bettered through the years. Classic Chardonnay notes of nuts, citrus and white flowers are complemented by a firm minerality and luxurious elegance in a white wine that must surely rank as one of South Africa s greats. The wine won gold medals at the Veritas and Michelangelo Awards ceremonies in the past and the Wall Street Journal described it in its August 2001 issue as This tastes like money. Barbeito Verdelho x bottle, donated by Auctioneer Anthony Barne MW Barbeito is one of Madeira s best know companies, renowned for their vintage wines. Since it was only founded in 1946 and, like some other houses does not own vineyards, these wines represent a selection made from the stocks of small growers, allowing them to concentrate on finding the fresh acidity which characterises their style and which is one of the key features in a top quality Madeira. Until the vine louse, phylloxera, reached the Island in 1872, Verdelho was the most widely planted variety but it has never recovered its pre-eminence, making vintage Verdelhos the rarest of the four styles. Verdelho is now grown mostly on the north side of the Island and the style associated with the name falls between Sercial and Bual in richness. The wines are characterised by precision and vitality. Chenin Blanc in South Africa has extensive depth in terms of vineyards, terroir diversity and winemaking expertise. Yet, one fact is unassailable: the most intensely flavoured Chenin Blanc wines come from older vines that have been carefully managed for balanced yields. The fact that South Africa has such a library of old plantings has made a tremendous difference to quality, and more and more parcels of old vines are being sought by our younger winemakers, who are making incredible wines. The sunshine flavours unfold delightfully on the palate with a full, rich mouth-feel. Although drinking superbly now, it will continue to develop further in the bottle over the next five years. De Trafford Straw Wine 2006 Attractive yellow gold colour. Complex marzipan, burnt honey and dusty dried apricot nose. The palate is sweet and concentrated with nice acidity and oak tannins to compliment and deliver a long, lingering finish. Delicious with biscotti, various cheeses and nuts. Ken Forrester T Noble Late Harvest 2001 This rich, unctuous dessert wine is the product of old bush vines which start their autumn days in a morning mist. This late season humidity brings on natural botrytis and we harvest the vines four or five times to ensure that we pick only the freshest grapes, without a dried raisin character. Rudera Noble Late Harvest Chenin Blanc 2006 This wine has a distinct bright yellow hue and a rich bouquet. The mouth-feel is rich offering layers of tropical flavours, apricot, and some marmalade. The delicate yet firm smoky, oaky flavours expand in the mouth. Fairly sweet and full, this wine has a lovely texture and good length and balance. Tierhoek Straw Wine 2007 WO PIEKENIERSKLOOF 100% Chenin Blanc from old vines, picked at normal ripeness then left to dry for two weeks on racks. Dried bunches were pressed into old French oak barrels, and then matured for five years in barrel. Immense concentrated flavours of dried apricots and honey, balanced by a fresh natural fruit acidity.

59 116 NEDERBURG AUCTION 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION Welbedacht Welgemeend A desire to make wines that truly exemplify the interaction of soil, topography and climate, with man as manager of that environment, led Schalk Burger Snr to a process to acquire terroir that started in 1995, which was inspired by the wonderful Groenberg Mountain with its renowned granite soils. Welgemeend was conceived in 1974 and flourished under the Hofmeyr family. In 1979, Billy Hofmeyr produced the first Bordeaux blend made in SA and for which he achieved numerous five star ratings. In 1982 Billy founded the Cape Winemakers Guild. His winemaking style reflected his love for French wines.
