8 8 SEPTEMBER 2015 Opvoedkundig NUUS/NEWS Edublox - Voorlopers in kogni ewe ontwikkeling Namate tegnologie 'n toenemende element van ons daaglikse lewens word, sal opvoedkundige spesialiste bymekaar kom en bespreek hoe om dit die beste in skole te inkorporeer. Tegnologie kan egter nie leerprobleme oplos nie, waarsku Edublox. Onderwysers en opvoedkundige spesialiste sal Vrydag 28 Augustus 2015 met IT personeel by die Tegnologie in Onderwys Konferensie in Johannesburg bymekaar kom om tegnologie in die onderwyssektor te ondersoek. Dit is 'n versnit van 39% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 17% cabernet franc, 9% malbec en 9% pe t verdot. Die wyn is by die onlangse Novare SA Terroir Wyntoekennings deur die paneel gekeur as die Nasionale Wenner van Top Rooi Versnit.Die Mitre's Edge Sholto 2012 het hope vol fynproewersgeure, jou palet kan nie ophou werk nie want na elke slukkie ontdek jy nog iets. Die wynspan se krea ewe kuns ge deel het baie goed geslaag om die regte versnit aanmekaar te sit na seker vele rondspeel in die kelder. Cabernet sauvignon se eienskappe soos soet bessies, swartbessie, ment en kruie, asook framboos, staan duidelik uit en Merlot se geure is ook daar, veral amandel en kaneel. Dan is daar ook nog sweempies van vye en broccoli. Amper te veel geure om hierdie wyn se piese smaakkarakter noukeurig uit te wys. Maar met kosmaak is daar feitlik geen twyfel nie, biefstuk oorheers loshande as ek moet kies, veral met peper en kruie. En natuurlik ook vleisbredies vol peper en kruie. Goed, mens moet kaasgeregte nie vergeet nie. Wynmaker Lola Nicholls het hierdie wyn aan haar pa opgedra en haar passie was altyd om top gehalte Bordeaux-styl versnit aanmekaar te sit en die Mitre's Edge Sholto 2012 was haar eerste en uiters suksesvolle poging. Die noord-oos hellings en clovelly grond daar in hul terrein werk veral goed vir cabernet sauvignon en merlot. Klink 'n glasie op die natuur en die mens se samesyn om ons smulpape gelukkig te maak.

11 Lunch with the Foulkes on Heritage Day at Nederburg Cape Town foodies Oscar and Andrea Foulkes, the dynamic duo behind Dish Food & Social, will be celebra ng over a decade of fabulous fare, on September 24 at The Red Table eatery at Nederburg. In true South African style, they'll be dishing up their absolute favourite gourmet braai dishes. 12 12 SEPTEMBER 2015 CHILD MATTERS Failure to Launch! Article: Hanlie Snyman The tle of this ar cle is also the tle of a comedy film with, of course, a happy ending. However, Failure to Launch is also a real-life, serious and modern syndrome which is experienced by many young people when transi oning into their next developmental phase. This phase usually involves being more independent and taking responsibility of your decisions and life, in other words, being an adult. While the movie is funny and cute, the reality of this situa on is a painful struggle. There are many factors contribu ng to this phenomenon, varying from a lack of intrinsic mo va on to undiagnosed learning disabili es, adjustment problems and consequences of high school habits that don't translate to later adult life. Caretaking behaviour from their parents can also contribute to this. Parents are held hostage by feelings of fear and guilt, worrying what will happen if that child is 'cut off' financially and whether or not he or she will be able to take responsibility of their own lives. This is not because they are bad parents, but because they love them. And the emo ons these parents are experiencing are conflic ng and o en leave them feeling frustrated. 4. Expect him/her to be a contribu ng member of the household with chores, if not money. Be clear on what the responsibili es are. Make sure he/she func ons as part of the family, not apart from the family. 5. Be aware of signs of narcissism and lack of concern for others. Narcissism may become a pa ern when one is repeatedly told how special, smart, talented and great one is, without connec ng these gi s to the personal effort and hard work needed to actualize them. The upshot? Kids can come to feel en tled to receiving what they want just because they want it. Make sure you don't feed narcissis c demands. Be clear on what you will do for your young adult and what you won't do. Ul mately, for a successful launch, irrespec ve of any diagnosis or issues that the young person faces, the final common pathway is that he or she must tap into and iden fy a passion or passions, experience the joy that comes with expressing those passions, and have opportuni es to share this joy with others. There must be a conscious effort to cul vate not just the logic of the mind, but also the desires of the heart. This is what ul mately leads to a sense of balance and sa sfac on in life the ul mate goal. So what does it mean to successfully launch into adulthood? Firstly it would refer to the achievement of certain developmental milestones. This occurs in early life when learning skills are necessary for more independent ac vi es and decision making. And by these we mean sensory-, motor-, social- and learning skills. We begin to direct our ac ons and thinking mind, which allows us to express ourselves, adapt and move forward. But where do we get the energy (fuel) to launch? The process for this launch first occurs between young children and their caretakers and facilitates the skilful a achment to an inner and outer world. The child's world expands to more diverse and complex environments, a er which they then go to school and are hopefully exposed to even more opportuni es to find and express their interests. They then move from primary to high school and the process con nues, where the child becomes more aware of his or her 'self': Do the other kids like me? Am I cool? What do I like? Are my grades okay? What do I want to become one day? The 'launch' starts at the comple on of high school, when the young person needs to decide what to do next. Go to college? Take a gap year? Get a job? For many the answer is: My parents want me to do it, or I need to study if I want to find a good job. These answers are mostly frustra ng and unsa sfactory to them, because the young person actually does not feel commi ed and focussed to deal with the demands that their new environment will offer them. There is no lack of inner mo va on in order for success to be possible, and they o en need guidance to get clarifica on and focus in this area. The 'launch' is one of the most complex of developmental launches, requiring an internalised faith in one's abili es and independence. The young adult needs to tap into a sense of both perseverance and resiliency in order to make independent decisions, while at the same me balancing their resources of others. Don't immediately think something is wrong. Give a young person me to establish himself. A brief s nt at home a er gradua on is to be expected. Not many college graduates have a clear direc on for what to do next. 2. Teach (or get professional help) your young adult to learn to deal with the mul ple challenges of adulthood. These might include how to job search, write a resume, build career skills, self-presenta on skills, money management, household maintenance skills and how to afford living on one's own. 3. Recognize psychological problems that may be inhibi ng his/her development. This might include anxiety, procras na on, lack of drive or persistence, need for instant gra fica on, a strong pa ern of avoidance instead of confron ng challenges, depression, inability to control anger, or substance abuse. Insist that he/she get help that specifically addresses those issues.

15 Paarl Nuus/News My onbekende vriend... Skrywe en foto: Jean O Brien Kortverhaal SEPTEMBER 2015 Die trein ruk-ruk oor die spore. Dit klink soos 'n ou Bantam-bakkie wat petrol sluk en vorentoe skiet en dan weer doodruk. Buite skiet die skoonheid van die vroeë Boland-oggend verby die vensters. Grepe uit 'n strokiesboek. Prentjie mooi. Koud met 'n lae mis wat oor die plaasdamme hang terwyl die berge uit toring en na die blou hemellug gryp. Die trein is vol. Verbasend vol vir 'n Vrydagoggend rit uit Paarl na Kaapstad. Die trein kronkel deur die vallei en die passasiers doen hul eie ding. 'n Paar brei, ander lees die koerant. Hier en daar is daar jonges wat skelm in hul neuse krap onder die valse indruk dat niemand hulle sien nie. "Sies" flits dit deur my gedagtes. Die trein nader Klapmuts-stasie. Ek is half opgewonde. Hoekom? My "spesiale" vriend klim by Klapmuts op. Baie dink hy is half boemelaar, maar hy is nie, hoewel hy soms so lyk en ruik. Maar dit pla my nie. Dit is sy Malmesbury-brei-stem wat my laat glimlag. So 'n warm lekker glimlag. Nog voor die treindeure oopruk, hoor ek sy stem. "Môre, hoe gaan dit vandag?" skreeu-roep hy aan die treindrywer. Iets word in die verte geroggel. 'n Antwoord. Dit klink ten minste vriendelik. Metaal skuur teen mekaar as die treindeure oopruk. "Môre al my goeie vriende" groet my onbekende vriend almal. "Dit is nog 'n wonderlike dag met God se genade" preek hy vriendelik. Almal bly s l. Mense koes-koes en maak of hulle besig is. Hulle vermy oogkontak met hom. Die jong man met sy vuil klere, okkiekoertbroek en gehawende trui wat laag op sy heupe hang. Die trein ruk voort en die Klapmuts-jongman stap in die gangetjie af en plak homself oorkant my neer. "Meneer, meneer," praat hy opgewonde. Ek glimlag en kyk op s p in sy skrefies ogies. "Daai trein voor ons is weer vol probleme. Dit is hoekom onse trein so 'n laat is." Ek hoor dit elke oggend as ek die trein Kaap toe neem. Dieselfde storie. "Wat het dan gebeur?" vra ek soos gewoonlik. "Nee, ek hoor daar is weer kabels gesteel." Dit is dieselfde verduideliking elke oggend. Ek skud my kop in ongeloof soos ek dit elke dag van te vore nog gedoen het. "Ja, die trein drywers het my vertel. Ek dog en vertel oom maar net sodat oom nie in die moeilikheid kom nie." Skielik skiet sy stem op, "kyk hoe lekker vreet daai koei die gras by die dam!" Ek kyk na buite en sien so 10 koeie staan en wei. "Oom, die mense sê ek is kêns omdat ek so stadig is met alles, maar ek weet God maak nie foute nie. Ek is maar net ek. My ouma sê ek is spesiaal so gemaak" sê hy met 'n lag. Ek wonder waar hy werk? Ek wonder presies waar hy bly. Wie sy familie is en waar hy sy aansteeklike lag kry. Die trein verminder spoed soos dit Muldersvlei-stasie nader. My onbekende vriend tel sy sak op. Hy klim oor by Muldersvlei om die trein Stellenbosch toe te kry. Ok Oom, koebaai, mag God Oom se dag seën." Ek groet. Half hartseer dat ek nie meer met hom kon gesels nie. My spesiale vriend sonder naam.

The event was well attended and Lynne Roux, Brett de Kock and Advocate Eloise Nel Wade were the guest speakers. Lynne Roux is well known in the Paarl property industry and Brett is a financial planner with 12 years experience in the financial industry. He spoke about risk planning, medical aid as well as l o n g a n d m e d i u m t e r m investments. Advocate Nel Wade gave her personal testimony and touched many a heart.a lovely morning was had by all, paving the way for more such events in the near future. RealNet Paarl/Wellington/Franschhoek has launched an initiative at Paarl Girls High school in conjunction with Miss SA Earth. According to Louis Visser and Eugenie Kempf of RealNet the aim is to create a recycling awareness at school level so that all can contribute to the conservation of the environment. The school s eventual aim is to become a Green School which is internationally recognised. RealNet has bought 9 recycling bins for the school to be placed strategically on the school grounds. 3 bins will be for plastic waste, 3 bins for paper waste and the remaining 3 bins for tins. These full bins will be emptied at a central point on the school grounds and collected by a waste management company who will pay the school for this.
