3 Foreword The 20th Michelangelo has lived up to and exceeded all our expectations in many ways: a new record number of 1829 entries was received this year from wine and spirits producers in South Africa, with an additional 11 international wine and spirits producing countries also submitting samples. A selection of wines and spirits were received from Australia, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Lebanon, Chile, Moravia, China, Croatia, Slovakia and Slovenia. For the first time this year spirits producers entered their rum, gin and vodka products to be judged alongside liqueur and brandy entries, leading to some interesting discussions among our international judges and eventually to even more interesting results! Continuing the tradition of being South Africa s only true international wine and spirits competition since 1997, we brought 28 wine and spirits Lorraine Immelman, Michelangelo founder and CEO specialists from 20 countries to South Africa in August to take on the task of judging the entries over a period of six days. At the glittering awards dinner on 26 September, 670 awards in total were presented to award winning wines and spirits. Of these 18 medals were platinum, 113 Grand Or, 271 gold and 253 silver. Medals were awarded to 52 international wines and spirits. IN THE BACK ROOM Over the past two decades many changes and adaptions have become necessary, as the competition rapidly outgrew various venues for storage, judging and the awards ceremony. Entries await judgement in tidy, ordered rows on purpose-built shelves: two deep, five rows high. This system also allows for the ordered and quick drawing of samples as well as good temperature control of the wines. A Michelangelo winner is without doubt an exceptional wine. Samples are opened and sorted for the day s tasting in an adjoining section, from where the bottles are brought to the judging panels in closed bags which conceal their identity. Wines were judged blind, utilising the international 100-point system. Should 4

4 Foreword panel members differ greatly in their scores and consensus cannot be reached, a different panel is asked to re-taste the wine. ONLY A THIRD OF ENTRIES ARE WINNERS! A Michelangelo winner is without doubt an exceptional wine: according to the Michelangelo s international scoring system we award only an approximate one third of entries (36% in 2016 to allow for percentile cut-offs and fairness of medal allocation), with the lowest medal awarded (silver) requiring at least 86/100. A wine wearing a Michelangelo Platinum sticker has been awarded 96/100 and a Grand Or (double gold) at least 94/100! THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Lastly, I would like to extend a personal thank you to the sponsors and ambassadors of the Michelangelo - I am immensely proud and grateful for the competition s growth in both stature and recognition over the past 20 years and realise that very little of this phenomenal growth would have happened without our sponsors. The wine industry producers and suppliers to the industry alike has supported the Michelangelo with enthusiasm and loyalty which often still astounds me. We look forward to the next 20 years and taking you all with us for the next part of the journey! 6

5 Governance and audit Governance and audit Report of factual findings in connection with the judging and scoring procedures of the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards of South Africa Principal details from the report of D Vermooten BAP (SA) with respect to the judging and scoring procedures of The Michelangelo International Wine Awards of South Africa during the week of August 15, 2016 to August 20, My engagement was undertaken in accordance with the International Standard on Related Services 4400 applicable to agreed-upon procedures engagements. The procedures are summarized as follows: 1. we arrived at the tasting venue before the wine judges to ensure that they were not present in the tasting room during the preparation stage; 2. we observed that at no point during the blind tasting were the wine judges informed about the identity of wines being tasted; 3. we checked that the names and vintages of the wines entered into the tasting correspond with those on the wine bottles from which the wines were poured into glasses for judging; 4. we checked that the label information was correctly captured for reporting purposes and that the bottles were numbered correctly; 5. we ensured that the wines from the numbered bottles were poured into glasses of the correct panel for tasting; 6. we observed the tasters discussions and made sure no undue influence was placed on the judges to change their score for any of the wines; 7. we verified more than half of the results of the trophy winners and confirmed that the entries with the highest scores in their respective classes received the relevant trophy; 8. we agreed the tasting sheets to score sheets where judges changed their scores after a second tasting in the event of wines being re-tasted; 9. we ensured that any incorrect entries (wines entered into wrong classes by producers) were removed and corrected for resubmission; 10. we ensured that only an estimated one third of entries were awarded a medal; 11. we tested the temperature in the storage area and checked the temperature of random samples of wines entered to make sure that temperatures complied with international standards: Red wines are served at between 15 C and 18 C and white wines, rosé and dessert wines at between 10 C and 12 C. Sparkling wines are served at between 8 C and 10 C. 12. we randomly selected 157 wine samples and agreed them to score sheets, entry forms, WSR2A & WSR4A forms, casted sample score sheets and checked sample score sheets for signatures, dates & panel numbers. 7 Spier Manor House, 2003 Looking back Looking back 1998 Since the start of the Michelangelo, more than 172 different judges from 45 countries have served on the panels. Judges and organisers LOOKING BACK A BIT... The first Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards was held in 1997 in Johannesburg, attracting all of 146 entries. Little did we realise that this would become South Africa s most influential wine competition with entries exceeded 1800 two decades later! The first Michelangelo took place in October 1997 in Johannesburg after six months of planning. The then vice president of the OIV in Brussels, Baudouin Havaux, flew to South Africa from Belgium to assist with setting up the first competition. In the first year only one double gold medal was awarded, namely to André van Rensburg for the Stellenzicht 1994 Shiraz. In the following year three double gold medals were Jean-Vincent Ridon of Signal Hill awarded to KWV, Vergelegen and Spier. In 2000 the first Michelangelo Trophy was awarded to Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht in 2000 for his 1999 Steytler Pinotage. By 2003, with entries increasing steadily at 10% per annum, the 1000 mark was breached. This corresponded with the Michelangelo moving to the Cape in that year. In 2009 entries surpassed the 1500 mark Spier Manor House, 2003 and this year Michelangelo broke the 1800 barrier. AND TO THE FUTURE The competition has built its reputation on a number of aspects, making it unique in South Africa in many ways: From the beginning, the strength of Michelangelo has been in the quality of its international judging panels. Judges are hand- picked from international wine competitions and organisations around the globe, and chosen for their experience and standing in the international wine industry. All wines are judged blind (unseen), using the 100 point international judging system Every aspect of the competition is audited Michelangelo is open not 12 13

8 Looking back only to wine and brandy entries, but offers the only platform I south Africa for the adjudication of spirits, including liqueurs and products such as rum, gin and vodka. ADDING MARKETING VALUE It remains the aim of Michelangelo to add value to the medals which our winners receive, and to this end we have signed a three-way agreement with Tamasa Wine Trading and Media Nova Publishing to host prestigious wine shows at selected international venues. At these glittering events only the crème de la crème of the Michelangelo winners will be on show, namely the trophy, platinum and Grand Or medal winners. In addition we have entered into an agreement with Fiera Milano, owners and organisers of The Good Food & Wine Show to host a Michelangelo Pavilion at every show, where our winners will have the opportunity to offer their wines and spirits for tasting and for sale to the public. INCREASED FOREIGN ENTRIES 2016 saw a drastic increase in the number of entries received from foreign producers, and more than 120 wines and spirits were entered from Australia, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Lebanon, Chile, Moravia, China, Croatia, Slovakia and Slovenia. For the first time this year Michelangelo received a number of Champagne entries from France, as well as Prosecco entries from Italy. In total, sparkling wine entries showed an increase of almost 30% with a total of 91 entries. We, the organisers and sponsors look forward to the future, and would like to wish our winners success and huge sales of those medal-winning wines! Inaugural Michelangelo OIV Vice President, Baudouin Havaux (second from left), hands André van Rensburg of Stellenzicht his Grand Or medal the only one awarded that year

15 Judging week August 28 29

16 Technical director s report Since this is a competition where 90% of judges are internationally sourced - each one recruited months before the event with great care, based on their tasting experience and expertise - it was decided to let everyone s rating count during the judging without forcing panel consensus. The judges are chosen to represent diverse countries and regions and to represent various fields like journalists, sommeliers, wine-makers and academics. They were all brought to South Africa at considerable expense and with various logistical challenges the least of those being co-ordinating flights from around the globe! The critical role of panel presidents The five-person panels comprised four international tasters and one local (South African) judge. Much thought went into ensuring there were no personality clashes on the panels and that panel presidents were fair but firm, and organised. It was their job to feed the class results through to the auditor on an on-going Christine Rudman CWM, Michelangelo technical director basis, and where any panellist differed significantly from his/ her colleagues, their opinion was heard. It was not their role to select the trophies, but simply feed through scores. In all cases trophies went to the highest scoring wines in their class, based on the final results. The question of palate fatigue In order to eliminate any bias, each panel tasted an entire class of wines or spirits, and where the classes were big, they were split over three or four days. Between wines per day were allocated daily to each panel over the tasting period of six days. Each panel was also given a variety of both white and red wines to taste each day in order to reduce palate fatigue. Blind tasting International entries were not identified, appearing blind alongside the South African products. Scores were based on the OIV 100-point system and the results per class therefore a direct reflection of the panels ratings of the entries. Shiraz, Shiraz-based blends, Natural Sweet, Botrytis and Fortified wines, Pinotage, and Chenin Blanc received particularly good scores, resulting in a high proportion of Gold, Gran d Or and Platinum medals. This is noteworthy when you keep in mind the range of different fields and countries from which the judges originated. They were briefed to evaluate the wines according to international quality standards, making no concession for local consumer preferences. Particular levels of expertise were accommodated where possible, meaning the panellists had wide experience in the wine classes they were judging. There was special mention in the panels daily reports of the overall quality of single red varieties where terroir Technical director s report expression was a significant factor, barrel-fermented and older Sauvignon Blanc, and Bordeaux-style reds which generally showed complexity. But the star of the show was Chenin, where the unwooded wines had ripeness and flavour, and the wooded and older wines were particularly impressive. On wooded whites, judges commented on Chardonnay s good oak management and balance, but singled out the Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blends, which they said were of an international standard. There was more elegance in many of the wines, both white and red. A number of panellists had tasted for Michelangelo before, and remarked that they found a significant overall improvement in quality, as well as a much wider range of styles within the categories - even within a relatively short period like five or six years. There was more elegance in many of the wines, both white and red. Negatives included too much oak in some wines, and a sacrifice of complexity where one variety dominated in a white or red blend. It was also suggested that a few wines were entered too early, eg some 2014 reds, which might have done better if they were a year or two older

46 Advertorial The art and science of cooperage manipulating wood for the creation of superior wines Nature s magical oak varieties and the skills of the Toneleria Nacional coopers combine to bring you, the winemaker, the best of art and science: barrels which invoke magical flavours into award winning wines We realise the changing requirements of modern oenology and strive to continuously develop new production processes which help create wines full of personality. We use mainly French Oak (all French oak is certified under the PEFC), American White Oak and a mix of Eastern European oaks from Hungary, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine. The difference lies in convection toasting In 2004 convection toasting technology was introduced, producing a softer and slower toasting than traditional toasting of the interior directly over an open flame. And so the Coffee Pinotage trophy is born The temperature at which a barrel is toasted impacts on the flavours it releases in the wine and this was the science behind the creation of the Coffee Pinotage trophy: flavours from French oak toasted near 190 C produce intensified scents of coffee, cocoa, cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla and cloves! A bird s eye view of an oak barrel being toasted over a direct flame Toneleria Nacional is the proud sponsors of the Michelangelo Coffee Pinotage Trophy since Toneleria Nacional s new South African head quarters in Paarl, officially opened in October Ambrosia flavour boost Mistral harmonious and elegant wines Odysé Convection Toasted: balance between wood and fruit The programmed application of water eliminates unwanted chemical components and bitter tannins from the wood. 58 Advertorial TM Winner of the 2016 IQ Business Trophy for the Most Innovative Wine/Spirits Larry Berger s Premium Triple Distilled Spirit of Rooibos aperitif has managed to capture all the woody undertones and unique aromas of South African Rooibos in a smooth, full bodied drink. Not a liqueur, not a strong spirit (28% alcohol) Best enjoyed chilled No ice No water The bio-diverse Cederberg region is home to a vast number of indigenous fynbos species and it is only here that it grows in its natural state. Even though it is endemic to the Western Cape the unique aroma of Rooibos is universally recognized and its health benefits and remarkably high anti-oxidant levels globally acknowledged. My passion for premium spirit and my curiosity about the unique properties of South Africa s Fynbos - and the Rooibos plant in particular - led me to begin a journey of distillation via this magical shrub. I invite you to share this innovative product with your friends and join the journey this is Rooibos as you have never tasted it. Drink it well chilled, no ice, no water enjoy! Larry Berger Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis ) Harvesting The Rooibos crop is harvested by hand once a year during summer when the bushy-plant s branches are cut using sickles, and bound into bundles Cutting and processing Upon arrival at the farm processing facility, the bundles are sorted and cut to a uniform length (from 1 mm to 5 mm) to ensure a neat and consistent appearance of the final product. The wet, freshly cut (and bruised) Rooibos is then placed in a long low heap across a tea court to sweat a carefully managed process of enzymatic oxidation which takes place during fermentation and causes the Rooibos to change from green to the characteristic red/amber color and develop its distinctive aroma. Drying and storage After the sweating process, the fermented Rooibos is spread out across a tea court to dry naturally in the hot African sun. The entire process is completed in less than 24 hours, and the new Rooibos is picked/sucked up and fed into 40kg sacks which are then graded, labeled and transported.
