1 Baldwin Creek Elementary ~ Lander, WY Where every Bobcat is respectful, responsible and safe! Bobcats Bulletin Volume 3, Issue 6 February 1, 2014 Leslie Voxland, Principal Principal s Corner Dear Families: 2/07 2/11 2/14 2/17 3/03 3/ / /14 Upcoming Events: Q3 midterms sent home P.I.E. Meeting (Noon) BCE s Talent Show 1 pm No school for students Spring Lifetouch Pictures PTCs (3:30 7:00 pm) PAWS Testing No SCHOOL How many of you remember your ACT score? Many of us might remember our score, but I doubt you ve had to use the score to work in your current position. This month I would like to share some thoughts about our upcoming state-required assessment called Proficiency Assessment for WY Students (PAWS). Every third through eighth grade student takes the PAWS, as it is a measure of the WY State Accountability Model. A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to listen to the WY State Assessment Coordinator, Deb Lindsey. She shared that 70% of the questions on the state assessment, PAWS, will be aligned to the Common Core Standards (CCS) this year. These standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that young people need for success in college and careers. With that being said, Ms. Lindsey stated that most likely the number of students scoring proficient or advanced on PAWS could drop by percentage points due to the gap transitioning from the old WY standards to the CCS. Our students will be administered the PAWS assessment March and usually your child s results are sent home at the beginning of the new school year in August. In the past few years, Baldwin Creek has scored near the top of all 3A schools according to the PAWS assessment, and I believe we will again this year as well, even though fewer Wyoming students possibly will score proficient or advanced as the transition unfolds to the CCS. Attendance/Health Office questions/ messages: Call or bromans@landerschools.org. Thank you. In closing, it is important for each child to give their best effort on PAWS since our staff is accountable for the performance of our students. PAWS is a snapshot of each child s academic progress; however, PAWS DOES NOT tell you a child s work ethic, ability to work with a team, respectfulness and kindness toward others, and other important life-long skills that do make a difference from day to day. These skills that can t be measured by ACT or PAWS are the ones that will stick with us throughout life. Go Bobcats! Sincerely in Education, Leslie Voxland, Principal
