I know schedules can become very packed, but even on your busiest days, here is a list of some simple things you can do at home to support your child s learning: Read together Stock your house with books and other reading materials Quiz your child on spelling, math and other facts Share favorite poems and songs with your child Review your child s homework Cook together Get organized using a calendar Go to the library together Let your child make choices Keep a puzzle on a table for your child to work on Tell family stories Engage in word play, riddles and tongue twisters Play board games Limit the amount of screen time Ask your child What if questions and discuss your conclusions We appreciate the parent support and want to say thanks to all the parents who attended conferences in October. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and with that brings to mind many things we have to be thankful for... I am very thankful for the wonderful staff, students and parents that encompass the Baldwin Creek learning community. Go Bobcats! 4 Baldwin Creek Elementary Counselor s Corner October's guidance lessons are focused on Citizenship! Citizenship: I will be involved in and care about my school and community. Guidance Lessons Baldwin Bobcats are learning about what it means to be a good citizen. Guidance lessons will focus on what it is to be a citizen in school, our local community, and country. We will be emphasizing the importance of respect and responsibility. Students will have an opportunity to get out in the community and enjoy live music using good audience skills. They will learn that it is important to follow rules and be respectful so the community can benefit without chaos. Students will also work around our school and neighborhood focusing on cleaning up litter and giving back to our community. At the end of the month we will have guest speakers who have served for our country come in and share about their experiences and learn about what citizenship has meant to them. Parents You can support your student at home by furthering the discussion on what it means to be a good citizen to you. What does it take to be a good citizen of Lander, the state of Wyoming, and the United States? How do you view citizenship on these different levels? Your child can learn about unique experiences you have had that have helped you to develop a greater sense of citizenship and pride in your contribution to community. Ways to show Citizenship Volunteer- Get out and get involved with the community. Our efforts to be connected to projects that will help all of our community are important. Volunteering can be as simple as picking up litter as we walk in the park, to being more involved in helping to develop plans for our town to continuously improve and address issues of concern. Use Manners- Being a good citizen means using respectful manners in public. Opening a door for someone is a great example of being a good citizen. Show Respect- Showing respect can be seen in our country s cultural customs. For example, holding our hand to our chest for the American flag is an illustration of respect, as well as removing our hats during our national anthem. Letters to Meg Meg is the school counselor s assistant and has recently gotten in trouble for throwing food in the lunch room. Meg has been sent to the principal s office for this disrespectful behavior. Mrs. Volans helps Meg to realize why respect and good manners is so important to being a good school citizen. Meg s behavior does not only affect her! Meg is part of a school community where all of the students work together in order to make it a fun experience and safe place. October s Question Meg would like your help to find ideas on how she can make a difference in the school community. She would like to give back to her fellow school citizens to make up for her behavior. Can you help give Meg some ideas? Al Simmons presented his homemade musical instruments while teaching the qualities that make sounds. Cross Strung, a family string band from Utah, shared their talents and knowledge of music and musical trivia through the performance of blue grass and country songs.
