5 Feeding Kids Safely & Well * Choking Hazards to Watch Out For * Large chunks: Pea-size pieces of food are safest they won't get stuck in your child's throat. Vegetables like carrots, celery, and green beans should be diced, shredded, or cooked and cut up. Cut fruits like grapes, cherry tomatoes, and melon balls into quarters before serving. Shred or cut meats and cheeses into very small pieces. Hot dogs sliced like coins can completely block airways if inhaled- always cut coins in half. Small, hard foods: Nuts, popcorn, cough drops, hard candies, raisins, and other small dried fruit and seeds are potential choking hazards. Remove seeds and pits from fruit. Crumbly & sharp snacks: Cookies, potato chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, bagels chips. Stringy foods: Long strands of spaghetti or celery. Sticky and soft foods: Avoid chewing gum, caramels, and soft foods like marshmallows and jelly candies that might get lodged in your child's throat. Peanut butter: Be careful not to give your child large dollops of peanut butter, which can be difficult to swallow. Instead, spread peanut butter thinly on bread or crackers. You might want to try thinning it with some applesauce before spreading it. More choking prevention: Avoid letting your child eat in the car since it's hard to supervise while driving. If you're using a rub-on teething medication, keep a close eye on your child as it can numb his throat and interfere with swallowing. Discourage your child from eating while playing, walking, watching TV, or doing anything else that might distract him from her meal. * Easy Nutrition & Dining Tips for Lifelong Health * Limit fruit juice to 4-6 ounces per day. Encourage whole fruits & vegetables instead. Serve lower fat or non-fat milk in place of whole milk for children over 2 years of age. Provide enough fluid to avoid dehydration & constipation. Offer water when you take a drink. Limit the everyday use of high-sugar foods such as soda, candy, and sugary breakfast cereals. Substitute whole wheat flour and bread for refined flour products. Plan meals and snacks around nutrient-dense foods like beans, fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Limit salt intake and processed foods. Be a role model for your children and eat with them as often as possible. Encourage physical activity to balance calories and maintain healthy growth. When preparing meals for your family practice food safety techniques to avoid food-borne illnesses.
