1 NOTICE TO MARINERS The Official Publication of Lakeside Yacht Club 4851 North Marginal Road Cleveland, Ohio Volume 85, Issue 11 November 1, 2015 My fellow Yachtsmen and Yachtswomen: INSIDE THIS ISSUE: I am calling a special meeting of the Voting Members of Lakeside Yacht Club at 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2015 in the LYC dining room. The purpose of the special meeting is to (a) determine the final scope of the renovations to the club, and (b) if necessary based on the scope of the renovations, approve a Supplemental Budget including a dues increase of not more than $20 per month across all categories of membership beginning May 1, I am very excited to announce that we have received multiple bids for our pool and clubhouse project. Members of the construction committee are continuing to work with the bidders to refine the bids, but it appears clear that two options exist, one within our existing budget but excluding certain improvements outside the scope of the renovation project proposed by the planning committee that would sever to greatly enhance the appearance and useful area of the clubhouse and deck, and another option which includes the full scope of improvements depicted on the renderings displayed at our annual meeting last month and the replacement of the current patchwork roof with a new, warrantied membrane. Our Treasurer has been in constant contact with our bank and has received assurances that the bank will work with us based on the decision of our members. Please plan to attend as we come together to chart our course into the future! (Please note that the kitchen and bar will be closed but light refreshments will be provided). Please join me in welcoming your Bridge and Board for 2016 on Saturday, November 14 for our annual Change of Watch dinner. This year finds our saying farewell to our beloved Secretary and Membership Committee chair, Shane Bonomini, and hailing the arrival of our new Secretary, Garry Marquiss. Jim Kubik s move to Fleet Surgeon in the middle of his term as Trustee created an opening among our Trustees so I nominated and your Trustees unanimously approved Nancy Keene as your newest Trustee. Nancy is a sailor docking on North Dock and brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of professional experience to your Board. Please join me in welcoming Jim and Nancy to our Bridge and Board! I hope you are enjoying the new menu as much as I am (my suits tell me I m enjoying it a bit too much) and Jacqueline and I look forward to seeing you on December 9 th for the Member Appreciation Party, if not before. As in years past, the Marines will be on hand to support Toys for Tots and I hope you might find a moment to pick up a new, unwrapped toy to donate. Finally, as your Commodore and fellow member, I ask that you consider an extra measure of generosity as you contemplate a donation to the employee appreciation fund. Our employees really appreciate this annual gift, and the renovation of the clubhouse means that the funds they receive will be that much more important to them this year. Thank you. But then, as happens in the very best works of fiction, Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver the message to Queenie in person. And thus begins the unlikely pilgrimage at the heart of Rachel Joyce's remarkable debut. Harold Fry is determined to walk each of whom unlocks his long-dormant spirit and sense of promise. Memories of his first dance with Maureen, his wedding day, his joy in fatherhood, come running back to him-allowing him to also reconcile the losses and the regrets. As for Maureen, she finds herself missing Harold for the first time in years. And therein is the unfinished business with Queenie Hennessy.

16 The Official Publication of Lakeside Yacht Club Page 16 LYC TREASURER S REPORT September 30, 2015 The current Fiscal Year is better than budget and better than last year. Net Income through September is $53,000 ahead of last year at this time. The biggest positive variance is the settlement of our Real Estate Tax appeal for a non-recurring $48,000 savings this year. Higher initiation fees, higher dockage revenue, and higher boat storage fees offset overruns in wages and the shortfall on food sales earlier in the year. The first $5,000 contribution to the Youth Sailing Club/Center under our new lease with Metro Parks is this year. Cash and savings were $505,115 as of October 1, CORRECTED 10/6/2015 LYC Building Committee Report 10/6/15 The drawing and engineering are complete, the committee members are reviewing the drawings for omissions and errors to be called out to the architect for correction prior to letting the drawings out for bid. The first corrections have been sent to the architect. Five (5) general Contractors have been contacted and expressed an interest in bidding the LYC renovation project. The swimming pool and clubhouse will be combined to be under the direct control of the General Contractor that is selected for the project. We are working on a schedule that includes the start and completion date for the project. A scope of work document is being developed for the bidding and we hope to have the corrections and scope document done and the project sent to bid Thursday. The committee is working on a 3 D rendering for the club and for the Cleveland Boat Show.

17 The Official Publication of Lakeside Yacht Club Page 17 LYC FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT AUGUST 20, 2015 The LYC Finance Committee met August 20, 2015; present were Commodore Black, Vice Commodore Carrabine, Treasurer Hunt, General Manager Orlowski, and Accountant Morris. The current fiscal year is better than budget and better than last year. Larger membership is helping. Food Sales are recovering after a rocky start this year. The settlement of our real estate tax appeal will provide a non-recurring $48,213 favorable variance this year. Cash and savings were $545,581 as of July 31. An increase in the Social Member Initiation Fee for FY 2016 was discussed. A comparison with EWYC fee structure indicated that our social initiation fee was already in proper relation with Edgewater s, but that our monthly social dues are about 25% below Edgewater s. The proposal was subsequently withdrawn. No change in the Fee Schedule will be proposed in the 2016 budget. Budget Assumptions for the 2016 budget were discussed. While there is still a slight chance that we can meet the previous deadlines, the budget will be based on a more realistic assumption of commencing the exterior additions to the front and back of the Clubhouse and the sewage pump station replacement this Fall, the interior renovations beginning in January, and the pool in the Spring of This will allow the Club to remain in operation through December 17 (with the exception of a few days to complete the pump station), and reopen at least the kitchen and bar in April, 2016 and full Clubhouse operation in May, Work through December will be assumed to be funded with cash and savings; interest on the bank loan will begin in January. We continue to assume that we will borrow $1.06 million of the $1.4 million total project. The budget will assume a net gain of three Senior Members, one Junior Member, and no net change in Social Members. Restaurant sales will remain flat for 2016 with the exception of January through March when it will be assumed that we will be closed. No Minimum Monthly Spending will be charged to members in January through March. Real Estate taxes will be budgeted at $78,389, down from $95,849. Parking lot repairs for about $50,000 will be included in the first draft of the budget, but unless they can be at least partially included in the Clubhouse renovation, repairs may have to be deferred a year. We have been having difficulty getting necessary accounting information from the new Huntington Merchant Services (credit card collection) system. The General Manager was authorized to explore going back to the prior vendor, Heartland Services. David Hunt Treasurer

18 The Official Publication of Lakeside Yacht Club Page 18 To: Board of Directors From: Larry Orlowski, Manager Date: October 6, 2015 Reports: In the month of September food sales were $45,092 compared to a budget of $45,684 which is $592 below budget but is $9,504 better than last year. In the month of September beverage sales were $30,949 compared to a budget of $36,834 which is $5,885 below budget and $1,180 better than last year. In the month of September we held five private events and held our Labor Day weekend events. Year to date we have had $164, in Non-member revenue. We will continue to monitor this number each year to ensure that we don t exceed our allotted 15%. During this Fiscal year we have had sixty-one private parties and twenty-six club events. Food and beverage sales over Labor Day weekend were down $2,646 compared to the previous year. I met with Sean McDermott from the metro parks regarding our pump-out installation. It looks like everything will be ago the only final step we need to take is to get stamped engineered drawings. The project looks like it will take possibly up to a week at this point so we will plan to have it done during this year s shutdown. I will have Randy Keefe coordinate with Mike Cunningham and Greg Vittardi on the installation schedule. The boat show special started in October last year as a progressive increase each month starting with $2,000 in October for the initiation and finishing in March at the $2,500. I was wondering if we wanted do this again this year I have three members from Mentor Harbor Yacht Club who want to join the club this month if the special is in place.
