Evening and weekend hours vary. We re on the web! Our Mission The Newport Senior Center at the Edward King House provides an active and enriching environment in a warm, welcoming, attractive setting for residents of Newport county fifty years of age or older. Membership includes exercise classes, health and wellness workshops, various educational programs and social events. The Center provides supportive services attuned to the diverse needs of today s senior adult. THE KING HOUSE TIMES Holiday Edition November and December 2015 From the Desk of the Executive Director... Surprise! I know that we said we would no longer be mailing out our newsletter and, for the most part, that is still true, but with so many new members and so much going on at the Center, we thought we would break rank this time and mail out our combined HOLIDAY EDITION of the King House Times. Please be sure to read each and every page of this newsletter. There is so much to do and see, I would hate to have you miss even one offering. We have done our best this year to streamline the registration process for all of our programs. Look to the end of the newsletter for sign up for our free programming as well as our paid programming. In addition, you will find our annual fund appeal letter in this edition. It is more important now than ever to help support the work we do here at the Edward King House. In this year alone, we have tripled the offerings to our members and the community at large. We have brought in more resources and services and have kept the lights on longer serving more and more older adults in need of services or enrichment. As a not-for-profit organization, we cannot do what we do as well as we do without your financial support. Every dollar helps us to achieve our mission of providing services to assist seniors to remain active and independent for as long as possible. We have so much to be grateful for at the King House. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our very own Miss Virginia Sullivan a very happy 100th birthday coming up in November. We are honored that you have chosen us to help you to celebrate this wonderful milestone. Next a HUGE Thank you to Anthony, Walter and Nancy the heartbeat of our Center for all that they do, above and beyond the call of duty, to make the EKH the very special place it is. And lastly, a sincere note of gratitude to YOU, our members, for making our community the vibrant and exciting community it is! Wishing you all a very happy and healthy Holiday Season. ~Carm Special Holiday Edition

3 Dear Friend of the Edward King House, This Center saved my life! stirring words from Madeline, a member of the Edward King House, who recently let us in on what attracts her to coming to the Center on a daily basis. My husband passed away, I could no longer work to support myself, my family is scattered about and I didn t see much to look forward to. The Edward King House gave me a place to go to on my own terms. I could participate as much or as little as I desired. Here, I found a safe place to be where I wasn t alone. It has become my home away from home. Or from Cecily, who came to us thinking she would have to give up her home of 50 years, The Edward King House connected me to the proper programs that allowed me to afford to stay in my own home. When I arrived, a member of the staff told me, this isn t your grandmother s senior center, and she was so right. I found the place where I could find answers. I feel stronger now with a little help from the people who care. Now known as the invisible population, today s senior is the least likely to ask for help when they need it. The Edward King House provides a safe, welcoming place where anyone over the age of 50 can access life sustaining services, attend classes/information sessions to stimulate the mind and body or get on board a bus to our next destination. The Center remains a reliable resource for providing the tools necessary for our adult population to remain active, independent and live in the community they call home for as long as possible. But we can t do this without your help; we rely on donations from people like you to deliver these much needed services and supports to this tender population. Please make your year-end gift to the Edward King House so that older adults like Madeline and Cecily find the supports they need to achieve a peace of mind so desperately needed in the third chapter of their lives. Thank you, Your donation will: - keep the lights on for older adults, who are looking for a warm place to spend their days, a nutritious lunch in the company of others, or to find support that will help fulfill the basic needs for living. -keep the cost of the over 40 services we offer to an all- time low making them either FREE or low enough for the average senior to afford. -help us to stay current with the needs of our senior population empowering them to be self-sufficient for as long as possible. Make your tax-deductible donation today. Carmela Geer, Executive Director PS Remember, you are our best partner to serve the invisible population of older adults who need our help to stay healthy, independent and viable members of our community. Your gift can help us reach our goal of over 5000 served. Your gift will help put us over the top. Thank you for your support.
