STEIN SENIOR CENTER APRIL 2016 NEWSLETTER Jane Barry, Executive Director 204 East 23 rd Street, 2 nd Floor New York, NY Tel: (646) Fax: (646) Website: HOURS OF OPERATION MONDAY FRIDAY 8:30AM 4:30PM Programs funded in part by the Dept. For The Aging

SPRING BRINGS A NEW START. Lots of news to report: Bob has retired with much fanfare! We wish him a healthy, restful and exciting next phase. Many of you have met our new Program Coordinator, Diana Nieves, who has written a comprehensive autobiography in this issue. She comes with several years of experience in senior centers and we are working to have a smooth transition. Our Feldenkrais class has again been subsidized by an anonymous member, so the classes will continue from March 29 to August 2nd. Thanks to the generosity of our anonymous donor. I want to again mention that all of our programs must be supported and attended since we cannot continue to pay for these programs if they are not well-attended. Several members have asked for an additional exercise class to be scheduled, but it is difficult to schedule another class unless it is earlier in the day or later in the afternoon. All of our rooms and space is in use from 10:30 to 2:30, so additional classes would have to be scheduled outside of these hours. Senior Planet will again teach computer classes for beginners here at Stein on Friday, April 15th from 10:00 to 11:30 for 10 weeks. Class size is limited, so please call LaToya to register at (646) ext.106. Thanks to our City Council members Rosie Mendez and Dan Garodnick for funding this module. Finally, I want to write about the meal service at Stein. As I have previously explained, Stein is contracted to serve 110 meals per day. We can have a variance of 10%, meaning we can go as high as 121/ day. If we continually go over this limit, we will overspend our budget. This is why we have had to turn some people away. The other issue is meeting the annual contracted contribution. If we don t get the amount expected, we need to take funds from other budget lines to meet that number. If you can, please step up to the plate and contribute to the cost of your lunch. I got a sandwich and a drink at the corner deli and it cost $10.50! We are asking for a suggested contribution of $2.00 for a full meal, if you are able. No one will ever be refused a meal for lack of funds. Thank you for supporting your senior center. Jane Barry, Executive Director

Hello. My name is Diana Nieves I was born in Puerto Rico. The fifth child of seven--3 older sisters, 1 older brother, 2 younger siblings, girl and boy; my parents made 9 in my family. With few exceptions, it was a happy, loving and nurturing household. My family traveled from PR to NY and back again, every year or so. I experienced big city life and the beauty of an island home. I was very athletic. In school I participated in all sports, volleyball; softball; track/field and I lifted weights. I won medals, trophies, ribbons. I was especially proud of the medals I received for throwing the javelin, discus and shot put. Meanwhile, I dreamed of becoming a Marine Biologist. I knew I didn't want my parents to have that expense. After all, they had my two younger siblings still at home. It would've been 6 years of schooling plus the added expense, of all the gear I'd need. I didn't get the scholarship I was hoping for so, after graduation I took a year off. I lived in Georgia for six months, went to NY for a year, then back to PR. My mother had offered me an opportunity to become part owner in her boutique. I did take her offer. It didn't last, I was longing to fulfill my dream. That's when I decided to check out what the military had to offer. The Coast Guard in particular has a Marine Science program, as far as I was concerned--close enough. I went to see the recruiter and signed up. Unfortunately, the recruiter didn't tell me you had a three year wait--just to get on the list. That's how it is with the military, you sign in the dotted line, then they give you the bad news. Which turned out not to be such bad news for me. Instead, I became a cop. The Army & Air Force call them Military Police; the Navy calls them Shore Patrol; the Coast Guard calls it Port Security. I went to boot camp in Cape May, NJ in winter. When I left PR, it was 84 degrees. I arrived in Cape May to 4 degrees and snow. During my second week, while doing military exercise, I took a bad fall and broke my collar bone, right at the sternum. I didn't know it until after I went to the Infirmary. Let me explain. That day consisted of marching 200 feet, get down do 50 push up, get back up do 50 jumping jacks then 50 push ups, and on and on. I didn't have time to feel anything. Not to mention we were frozen and scared as hell! Anyway, I was sent to Philadelphia Naval Hospital where I spent two weeks. There wasn't much that could be done though, especially in that region. I was sent back to Cape May for another week in the Infirmary. Just before the week was up, the Captain came to talk with me. He said the Coast Guard is willing to offer me 50% disability pay to discharge me medically. I didn't hesitate one bit, I begged him to let me stay. I signed up for six years and I wanted to complete six years. It was NOT EASY to do all the exercises with my injury but, I learned to pop the bone back in place and kept going. As hard as that was, I still say I'm so glad I stayed. I became third officer for my company and the Sargent -at -Arms in the woman barracks. After boot camp, I was sent to Yorktown, Virginia; for Port Security training. We were instructed in police procedures; firearms training; hand to hand combat; handcuff and baton handling, they even made us go through two weeks Fire School. IT WAS INTENSE. But, I did well. I even got my first medal--marksman on the.45 caliber pistol and co-commander of our class. After 13 weeks, it was off to OJT (On the Job Training). I was very lucky, they sent me to the MSO (Marine Science Office) in old San Juan, PR. I trained to do conduct search and rescue missions; vessel and waterfront facilities inspection; hazardous material storage; drugs and contraband enforcement; life saving measures; to name just a few of my duties. Later on I transferred to COTPNY (Captain of the Port NY) at Governor's Island. By this time I'd entered the Active Reserves Unit. Which is a winding down of duties in preparation for the Reserves. I would've reenlisted had it not been for the recession. President Reagan was allocating funds for reenlistment only for Active Duty members. Once my enlistment ended, I got work at a commercial printing company, as a typist. I learned to type back in junior high school, so it came easily to me. I also worked overtime on the floor, learning as much as I could of the trade. I would deliver work orders to the graphic department and was impressed with how they set type as well as design ads. I thought, I could do that! I started taking classes in print production, within a year I got a certificate in Graphic Design/Typography. But, I'd started working six months before that at the Irish Echo Newspaper. I set type and designed their ads. I worked there for five years and was promoted twice, first as Chief Typesetter, later as Production Manager. Then went to work at a magazine publishing house that published 60 mass media magazines. I was the Typography Director for all those magazines.

Then, I lost my mother. She died young--52 years old--by today's standards. She was an incredibly beautiful and talented woman. We ALL lost a little bit of our selves when she died but, none more than my dad. They had been together since they were both 18. My dad was strong in every way, but, when mom died he cried so much. He said he'd lost his best friend. He died not too long afterward. So, I never really got to see them age. Which is what led me to do the work I'm doing now. I started working at the Park Slope Senior Center in Brooklyn in First as a volunteer; then as the Social Services Coordinator; lastly as the Interim Director, Program/Activities Coordinator. I coordinated trips, assisted seniors with entitlements such as: SCRIE, SNAP, HRA and so on. Later, I went to work at Eileen Dugan AMICO Senior Center as the Acting Assistant Director. Where I gained more experience working with seniors. At both these Centers, I had administrative duties but, what I enjoyed most was getting to know my seniors. Helping them with documents, helping them period. The work I've done with seniors has been incredibly fulfilling. I do it not as a job, but as a calling. I hope that by the work I do, I honor the memory of my parents. Again, I didn't get to see them age, so every senior I work with becomes my family. That's why I'm here, that's why I do the work I do.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS SHAKESPEARE Beware my Lord of the green-eyed monster... The devilishly scheming Iago. Here's Shakespeare s definitive study of jealousy. Everyone in this painful tragedy is ultimately poisoned by mistrust. Most especially the romantically naive couple who start out like a May/December Romeo and Juliet. Black Othello and high born Desdemona have eloped in a gondola. For the starry-eyed couple midnight in Venice is a lover s playground. But their happiness is not meant to be.
