2 A Time for Changes.. I want to bid farewell to LaToya Fowler, who is going on to other opportunities. LaToya has been with Stein for 2 years and is passing the torch to Helen Waite. Helen is a transplant from Florida who is thrilled to be living in New York. She comes with many years of experience working with older adults and we welcome her to our team. There is a lot of activity in the center and some new programs coming. There has been recent focus on the lack of support for caregivers and new programs have been funded to help support this unrecognized population. We are going to partner with Presbyterian Social Services in a new program called, Circle of Care starting this month. Social Workers from Circle of Care will be at Stein on Mondays from 1pm to 4pm starting June 13 th. They will counsel, offer resources and give informational talks of interest to caregivers. If you are caring for your family member, please take advantage of this opportunity to get the support you need. We will also have Public Health Solutions back at Stein on Fridays to help those participants who are eligible for Medicaid apply on site. Feldenkrais class is going strong and will continue through August. It is a method of connecting mind and body to relieve tension and pain. Try it on Tuesday mornings at 11:00 am. Arthritis Class on Mondays and Thursdays are popping, as is Zumba. We are looking at starting a chair Yoga group as well. We will have nurses at Stein this summer. They will be helping in many ways such as Blood Pressure monitoring, health informational talks, helping to serve lunch and neighborhood walks (when it s not too hot). We have served as a site for Nurses from Hunter-Bellevue, Pace University and NYC Technical College for many years and it gives them important experience and our members expert health monitoring and information. The Dept. for the Aging is introducing a new game called, Agetastic which was developed to teach and inform center members on different topics in an entertaining manner. They are forming a focus group at Stein to test the game. The focus groups will be meeting in July and running for 8 weeks. There will be a payment of $60.00 to participate in the program. Participants must commit to the 8 weeks of testing. If interested, please see Diana Nieves. We are hoping to include Spanish-speaking members as well. We have also spoken with Nancy O Brien, a Chair Yoga teacher who is well-loved. She will be subbing for Barbara several times in June. If there is interest in making Chair Yoga a regular program, we will schedule it. I am working on putting together a trip to the New York Botanical Garden. They are showing Impressionist paintings of gardens in a special exhibition. I will announce more specifics as I get them. Please remember we are a Cooling Center and we will be open until 6pm when Cooling Centers are activated. Stay Cool! Jane Barry
