1 STEIN SENIOR CENTER MARCH 2016 NEWSLETTER Jane Barry, Executive Director Robert F. Doxsey, Deputy Director 204 East 23 rd Street, 2 nd Floor New York, NY Tel: (646) Fax: (646) Website: HOURS OF OPERATION MONDAY FRIDAY 8:30AM 4:30PM Programs funded in part by the Dept. For The Aging
2 Welcome to March, 2016 Can Spring be far behind? We ve been glued to our TVs watching the political happenings. It promises to be a fascinating year ahead. As usual, Stein is jumping with all the activities and programs. We have a new feature starting Thursday, March 31st from 10 am to 2 pm. Bernie is a watchmaker who will fix your watches (replace batteries, clean the watch innards, etc.) The only charge will be for the batteries or other replacement parts needed. Bernie will be at Stein twice monthly, so gather your good watches. By the way, Bernie won t fix your Rolexes, Movados or Tourneau gems, just your eve-ryday watches. Stein is focused on health and wellness and offers many exercise classes from Yoga to Zumba to Strength training to Feldenkrais classes and more. We know that exercise is key to maintaining good physical and cognitive health. Please take advantage of our classes which are taught by certified teachers. Your presence guarantees that these classes will continue. The same goes for our educational and cultural programs, which are many and diverse. Your support keeps them going. It is the time of year where we are assessing needs for the last quarter of our fiscal budget. We are again going to be under in our meal contributions. Please Step up to the Plate again and help us cover our annual contribution level. If you are able, please contribute the suggested $2.00 per meal. The actual cost of meals is much more of course, so your contribution matters. Thank you for your help. Stein is fortunate to have three nursing programs here from Hunter/Bellevue, Pace and NYC Tech. These nurses are doing their community rotations here and help out in many ways. In addition to giving health lectures, monitoring blood pressures, etc. they are planning a health fair, special fundraising events, and outreach to the health community. We are planning computer classes provided by Senior Planet, funded by our wonderful Council members, Rosie Mendez and Dan Garodnick to start in April. Dates to be announced. Barbara Green continues to volunteer her seamstress skills in March, fixing seams and mending tears in your clothes. Please see the newsletter pages for her schedule. The Senior Chorus will be meeting until early April. Kristen, the conductor is preparing the chorus for performances here and at Turtle Bay Music School. Thanks to an anonymous member for funding our Feldenkrais classes for the last year. Stein also offers some dynamic smaller group activities: play-reading, art history, beading (not so small), bellydancing, meditation, knitting, and bridge. Our SPA group is for early to mid-stage Alzheimer s clients and their caregivers. It is a wonderful group of people, well-respected and full to capacity. On Wednesdays, Volunteers, Pat and Jane sell soft and hard-cover books and greeting cards- the best deal in town - $.25 for soft cover, $.50 for hard cover books. As soon as the weather improves, we will plan some day trips in and around the city. If you have suggestions, please let us know. I also want to thank our great staff and student intern, Janice for their good work, the nurses and their professors for excellent projects, our volunteers for their constant loyalty, our teachers, our board and senior advisory council, our members for your support. The Stein Senior Center is a partnership of all the above resulting in a dynamic and changing center for lifelong learning. Jane Barry, Executive Director

9 SPECIAL PROGRAMS SHAKESPEARE Beware my Lord of the green-eyed monster... The devilishly scheming Iago. Here's Shakespeare s definitive study of jealousy. Everyone in this painful tragedy is ultimately poisoned by mistrust. Most especially the romantically naive couple who start out like a May/December Romeo and Juliet. Black Othello and high born Desdemona have eloped in a gondola. For the starry-eyed couple midnight in Venice is a lover s playground. But their happiness is not meant to be. Envy intrudes and evil will dash their tender dreams. Shakespeare at his best.
