3 It s All Greek to Me Janet Brown, RD, LRD Valley Senior Services Dietitian Most people have tried traditional yogurt but have most of you tried Greek yogurt? What s the difference between traditional and Greek yogurt? Which is healthier? Which tastes better? There are a few differences (and similarities) between traditional yogurt and Greek yogurt. One difference is that Greek yogurt is extensively strained which removes much of the liquid whey, lactose and sugar which creates a thicker consistency. Both yogurts have roughly the same amount of calories but Greek yogurt has half the sugar/carbohydrate and 2-3 times more protein good news for those with diabetes. Because much of the lactose is removed, Greek yogurt is less likely to bother the lactose-intolerant. Both yogurts may contain added sugars (for flavor) and high fat. When buying either type of yogurt, choose light and 0% fat. Let s talk about blood pressure. Too much sodium can raise your blood pressure thankfully neither yogurt is high in sodium and actually Greek has less. Calcium is another mineral that helps to lower blood pressure and strengthens our bones. Traditional yogurt actually has more calcium at 30% of daily recommended amount compared to Greek yogurt with 20% - both are a great source of Calcium. Either traditional or Greek yogurt is a healthful choice, but the Greek variety is extremely versatile! Plain (unflavored) Greek yogurt can be used in place of sour cream. Put a dollop on your baked potato, in your chili or on your beef stroganoff. Blend Greek yogurt with a sprinkle or two of powdered Ranch dip to make a great vegetable dip. Use it in place of eggs and oil when baking. Replace mayonnaise on sandwiches, in tuna/ egg/chicken/potato salad and coleslaw with Greek yogurt. One of my favorites and is somewhat bizarre: mix flavored Greek yogurt with peanut butter. This makes a great dip for fruits and vegetables!! Which one tastes better? That s up to you some people have traditional taste buds but as for this dietitian: it s ALL GREEK TO ME!! Page 3

4 Scam of the Month: Police Warn about Scam Targeting Elderly ND Residents Police departments have received information about a possible Medicare scam targeting Medicare beneficiaries in the state. The scam is not new. However, police departments have received calls from citizens indicating recent phone calls related to this scam. With this scam, the scammer calls the victim and tells them their Medicare card must be renewed in order to remain eligible for benefits. The scammers trick the victim into believing the request is real by revealing some of the victims personal information, such as name and address; this information is most likely found through an Internet search. The scammer then pressures the victim to provide sensitive identifying information such as their Social Security number, Medicare number, and/or banking account information. Medicare and Social Security already have all this information, they will not call beneficiaries asking for sensitive personal information, and Medicare does not visit you at your home. Also, Medicare cards are sent to participants when they first sign up and these cards do not expire and never need to be renewed. It is true over that over the next few years Medicare recipients will receive a new Medicare number and card that will replace their Social Security number on their current Medicare card, however, new cards will not be released for existing Medicare beneficiaries before What can you do if you get these types of calls? Hang up. It s Shrewd to Be Rude!! Call the ND SMP office. Contact CMS at 800-Medicare ( ) The information provided is intended to be a general summary only. Source of information: Minot Daily News.
