3 Bone up on your Calcium Janet Brown, RD, LRD Dietitian for Valley Senior Services What is Calcium? Why do we need it? How much do we need? What are the best sources? What are creative ways to incorporate Calcium into my diet? Calcium is a required mineral for our bodies. We need Calcium, with Vitamin D, to help our bones and teeth and to prevent disease. As we age, our bones don t absorb Calcium as well and this puts us at risk for osteoporosis (weak bones). Women s bones tend to weaken earlier than men, therefore the Calcium requirements increase earlier for women. Women, 51 and older, and men, 71 and older, need 1200 milligrams of Calcium per day. Consuming enough Calcium and regular weight-bearing exercise (walking, climbing stairs, weight training and dancing) may help prevent osteoporosis or at least maintain bone health. The best sources of Calcium are milk, yogurt, and cheese, including cottage cheese. One creative way to obtain your days worth of Calcium is to have 1 serving of each of these sources every day. Valley Senior Services provides ~1/3 of your days requirement with the ½ pint of milk served at mealtime. Other sources of Calcium include tofu, soybeans, dark leafy green vegetables (kale) and canned fish with bones (sardines and salmon). Calcium-fortified foods are available for those that are lactose-intolerant. These foods include Calcium-fortified juice, soymilk, rice milk and almond milk. Try these creative smoothies to Bone up on your Calcium: (Add all ingredients to a blender or Magic Bullet or Ninja and Enjoy!) Orange Creamsicle ½ frozen banana ½ cup orange juice ½ cup low-fat Greek yogurt Sweet Greens ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup Kale 1 cup low-fat milk Raspberry Cheesecake 1 cup frozen raspberries ½ cup cottage cheese ½ cup low-fat milk Chocolate Chia 1 cup chocolate milk 2 Tbsp Chia seeds ½ frozen banana Page 3

4 New Medicare Cards Debut in 2018 Here s what you need to know about the new cards: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin mailing the cards to beneficiaries in April The cards will automatically be mailed to all 58 million current beneficiaries. You don t need to do anything special to receive one. To help alleviate identity theft, the new cards will not have your Social Security number. The new cards will instead feature a randomly assigned Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) made up of 11 letters and numbers. Your benefits won t change under the new MBI. Scams relating to the new card are already surfacing. Some Medicare recipients report getting calls from scamsters who tell them that they must pay for the new card and then ask them for their checking account and Medicare card numbers. Don t give out either number. Anyone saying they are going to charge you for a card is a scammer, says Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy with the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse in San Diego. In the case of CMS, they will never need you to tell them what your Medicare card number is because they already know it.
