3 Normal Aging Process or Vitamin Deficiency? Vanessa Berg, MD LRD CDE The North Dakota Dementia Care Services Project Presents Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. To help people age well, the Alzheimer s Association is offering the Healthy Habits for a Healthier You program. This workshop covers four areas of lifestyle habits that are associated with healthy aging: Cognitive Activity Physical health and exercise Diet and nutrition Social engagement Upcoming Classes Fairmount - August 8th Lidgerwood - October 29th Classes start at 10:00 am and will be held in the local senior center Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12. This vitamin is found in milk and dairy foods, meat, fish (especially salmon), poultry and eggs. Some medications can interfere with the absorption of B12. Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium reduce the absorption of B12 from food (but not in supplement form). Metformin, a medication for diabetes, significantly decreases absorption as well. A supplement form of B12 is recommended for these individuals. Healthcare providers often overlook this vitamin. Some experts estimate that up to 30 percent of our senior population is deficient! Often we assume the symptoms of loss of balance, muscle weakness and memory problems are associated with aging. A supplement of Vitamin B12 could be the answer. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. Please call to register. This project is supported by funding through the North Dakota Department of Human Services, Aging Services Division. alz.org/mnnd

4 ND SMP Scam of the Month August 2018 Scammers Take Advantage of New Medicare Cards If you or someone you know is on Medicare, there's a new scam taking advantage of a big transition that is meant to cut down on fraud. The Better Business Bureau and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid are telling seniors they need to be aware of a new phone scam targeting anyone with a Medicare card. The rollout of the new, more secure cards to 60 million beneficiaries is creating an opportunity for scammers. The calls you get from scam artists may sound like this: "This isn't a scam. This is what we do ma'am. I'm in Washington, D.C. and I need to verify your Medicare number before we can mail your new card. Oh, we need your social security number before we can mail your new card. Can you give me your bank account information? Because we need to direct deposit some money owed you from services under your old Medicare number. You have to pay for this card. All of these are fake. Don t be conned by a con artist! You DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING to receive your new Medicare card or pay anything for your new card. IMPORTANT NOTICE: ND just received notification that the next Wave of mailing new Medicare cards starting NOW in June and moving forward INCLUDES North Dakota Medicare beneficiaries. What you need to do to be ready? If you receive a call or saying you need to confirm your identity or pay for a new card, hang up or delete the , it s a SCAM. Share your new Medicare number with your health care providers. SHRED your OLD card after billing has been established under the new number. Contact ND SMP at if you have questions. The information provided is intended to be a general summary only. Source of information: Wisconsin SMP. New Medicare Cards Create New Opportunities for Scammers.
