1 Silver Quill Southeast Senior Services Bone up on your Calcium Janet Brown, RD, LRD Dietitian for Valley Senior Services S EPT EMBER V OLU ME 1 N O. 167 What is Calcium? Why do we need it? How much do we need? What are the best sources? What are creative ways to incorporate Calcium into my diet? Calcium is a required mineral for our bodies. We need Calcium, with Vitamin D, to help our bones and teeth and to prevent disease. As we age, our bones don t absorb Calcium as well and this puts us at risk for osteoporosis (weak bones). Women s bones tend to weaken earlier than men, therefore the Calcium requirements increase earlier for women. Women, 51 and older, and men, 71 and older, need 1200 milligrams of Calcium per day. Consuming enough Calcium and regular weight-bearing exercise (walking, climbing stairs, weight training and dancing) may help prevent osteoporosis or at least maintain bone health. The best sources of Calcium are milk, yogurt, and cheese, including cottage cheese. One creative way to obtain your days worth of Calcium is to have 1 serving of each of these sources every day. Southeast Senior Services provides ~1/3 of your days requirement with the ½ pint of milk served at mealtime. Other sources of Calcium include tofu, soybeans, dark leafy green vegetables (kale) and canned fish with bones (sardines and salmon). Calcium-fortified foods are available for those that are lactose-intolerant. These foods include Calcium-fortified juice, soymilk, rice milk and almond milk. Try these creative smoothies to Bone up on your Calcium: (Add all ingredients to a blender or Magic Bullet or Ninja and Enjoy!) Orange Creamsicle ½ frozen banana ½ cup orange juice ½ cup low-fat Greek yogurt Sweet Greens ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup Kale 1 cup low-fat milk Raspberry Cheesecake 1 cup frozen raspberries ½ cup cottage cheese ½ cup low-fat milk Chocolate Chia 1 cup chocolate milk 2 Tbsp Chia seeds ½ frozen banana

3 ND SMP Scam of the Month September 2017 What to Do if You Suspect a Health Care Scam You can bet if you see a headline one day, a related scam will follow soon after. Scammers are always lurking, trying to get your personal and financial information through calls, s, text messages and letters. Scammers know beneficiaries have questions about the Health Insurance Marketplace or the new Medicare Cards, and they will take advantage to mislead you. Some health care scams we have seen so far: Charging the beneficiary to help get new insurance Someone may contact you offering to help you navigate the Health Insurance Marketplace for a fee with a goal to get your bank account or credit card numbers. The people who offer legitimate insurance help, like the State Health Insurance Counselor program or a Navigator with the Health Insurance Marketplace, will not charge you, it is a free service. New Medicare cards Someone gets in touch with you, saying you need a new Medicare card because of Obamacare, or you will lose your Medicare coverage if you don t pay a fee for a new card or give them your SSN and bank account number. Not True. Medical discount scams Someone contacts you offering discounts on health services or products saying they can save you money. Medical discount plans are not health insurance. Some medical discount plans provide legitimate discounts, but others are scams that attempt to get your personal or financial information and don t deliver on the service promised. I m from the government No. They re not! The government will not call you about your health insurance or ask you to verify your Social Security number or bank information. Insurance agents. Someone claiming to be an insurance agent gets in touch to say you should act now to get your new insurance. They may promise you a special rate or help you avoid a penalty. If you have Medicare, the open enrollment for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans are the same: October 15-December 7. You don t have to do anything different because of the Affordable Care Act What can you do to protect yourself from fraud? Keep your personal and financial information private. Keep your personal numbers (Medicare, Social Security, and bank account numbers) PERSONAL. Call the ND SMP office if you have questions about Medicare fraud.
