1 Silver Quill Southeast Senior Services A U G U S T V OLU ME 1 N O. 154 DASH to Improve Blood Pressure Janet Brown, RD, LRD - Valley Senior Services Dietitian Most Americans unfortunately have high blood pressure or hypertension. We have either inherited it or have a lessthan-healthy lifestyle (poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking). Although, we have no control over our genetics/relatives, we do have control over our exercise habits and especially diet. One diet worth investigating is particularly effective in lowering blood pressure...the DASH diet. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. In 1997 and 2000, studies were done by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute on ways to lower blood pressure. One obvious finding was the lower the sodium (salt) intake, the better the blood pressure. The less obvious discovery was that higher intakes of foods containing potassium, magnesium and calcium also help the blood pressure. The U.S. News ranked the DASH diet as the best overall diet for health and weight management. Many people are aware that sodium should be restricted. The current American consumes far more than a DASH of salt per day (much greater than 3400 mg/day). According to the American Heart Association, sodium consumption goal is less than 1500 mg/day. Be aware that one teaspoon of salt contains 2300 mg/day. In other words, if your blood pressure is high, try not to touch the salt shaker, not even a DASH. Other major places to find high sodium include packaged/convenience foods, eating out (both restaurants and fast foods), broths, seasonings (taco, garlic salt, celery salt, lemon pepper), marinades and condiments (soy sauce, salad dressings, pickles, olives and jarred salsa). Better, healthier choices include buying fresh, making your own and looking for Healthy Heart or No Salt Added on packages. To lower blood pressure, we need more than a DASH of foods high in potassium, magnesium and calcium. Potassium is found greatly in fruits and vegetables the DASH diet recommends 4-5 servings of both/day. Magnesium is found in nuts, seeds, dried beans and peas 4-5 servings/day. Calcium is found in dairy foods, specifically milk and yogurt 2-3 servings/day. Continued on pg 8

7 ND SMP Scam of the Month August 2016 What You Can Do To Fight Fraud Medicare loses over $60 billion every year. Medicare is a very large system, receiving approximately 4.5 million claims a day and making over $1 billion in payments daily. This presents a huge challenge to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) mission which is to detect and prevent waste, abuse and fraud. Medicare has unleashed strike force teams to battle fraud. But law enforcement and CMS program officials say Medicare beneficiaries are the first and best defense against criminals who con the Medicare system. To fight Medicare fraud: Review every Medicare summary notice and explanation of benefits mailed to you. The documents detail services, supplies and what you owe for these services, so look for services you didn t receive. Call Medicare s hotline at to report healthcare fraud. No calls are ignored and callers are not required to use their names. Identity thefts often target older people to harvest Medicare ID numbers and other personal information. To keep your personal information out of the clutches of Medicare fraudsters, remove your Social Security card from your wallet and store in a secure place along with your Medicare card. Only carry your Medicare card when you will be accessing a health care system such as a pharmacy, new doctor visit, etc. Protect your Medicare prescriptions. Scamming of prescriptions is becoming more common; the criminal sells the drugs, fetching top dollars from dealers. Safeguard your prescriptions, hide or lock up your medications, especially if you have people coming into your home to provide services such as cleaning, construction work, etc. Never share personal information unless you initiate the contact with a trusted health care provider or pharmacist. Here s what to do if you get a suspicious call: Don t give out any personal information. Simply hang up the phone or better yet, if you don t recognize the telephone number, don t answer it at all. Call the ND SMP office if you have questions about Medicare fraud. North Dakota Senior Medicare Patrol Phone: Or (701) For more information or to locate your SMP, visit Funded in part by the U.S. Administration on Aging/Administration for Community Living 7

9 Social Security Questions and Answers Question: Is age 65 still important for Social Security retirement? Answer: While age 65 is important as the starting age for Medicare, it has no special meaning for Social Security retirement anymore. Until the Social Security Amendments of 1983, retirement benefits for all birth years were not reduced if you waited until age 65 before starting them. Benefits started when younger than age 65 were reduced for age. The 1983 Amendments put into place a very gradual increase to full retirement age (FRA) that is not yet completed. Since then, FRA varies based on your year of birth and is age 66 for birth years 1943 to Still, based on the 1983 Amendments, full retirement age will eventually be age 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Today, retirement benefits started at age 65 are reduced because it is younger than FRA. Learn your own FRA and estimate retirement amounts in the Social Security Retirement Planner at Medicare begins for most people at age 65, earlier if receiving disability. If you receive Social Security benefits, expect a Medicare card and instructions several months in advance of age 65. If not receiving benefits, you must take action yourself to enroll. An easy online Medicare application and additional information is on the Social Security website at or you can make an appointment to complete the application with a Social Security representative. Enroll two to three months before age 65. If still employed with work related medical insurance, discuss Medicare coverage with your employer and insurance company. You will probably want to enroll in Medicare Part A (Hospital), which does not have a premium, but you might not yet need Part B (Medical), which has a monthly premium. Social Security employees cannot advise you about this. Detailed Medicare coverage and premium information is at the official Medicare website operated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Based in Grand Forks, Howard I.
