2 Gin History The first confirmed production date of gin is the early 17 th century in Holland. There are claims that it was produced earlier than this in Italy. In Holland it was produced as a medicine and then sold in pharmacies for stomach complaints, gallstones and gout. To improve the taste, the Dutch began to flavour it with juniper. British troops fighting the Thirty Years War were given gin ( Dutch courage ) for its warming properties. They began bringing it home which lead to production increasing in Britain. Gin truly triumphed in the 1920 s, the first Cocktail Age following World War One. It was now recognised as a cosmopolitan and refreshing drink. It became the favourite drink on the famous Cunard Cruises. In the 1920s and 30s the cruiser travelled from the USA to Britain serving the notable Gin cocktails in the hours between afternoon tea and dinner. London dry gin was subtle enough for mixers and quickly became a staple ingredient for a host of fashionable drinks including the iconic Martini. Over the next 20 to 30 years many other cocktails were created, reflecting the dizzy and sophisticated society. By 1951 the Bartenders Guild had 7000 cocktails registered on its files! Gin had become one of the three essential drinks for home entertainment. Gin and tonic has remained one of the most popular and refreshing drinks right up to modern day. Genever is the original style of gin using a malt base. It was first pioneered in the Netherlands during the 16 th Century, where it was mass produced in the city of Schiedam. The British adopted the drink in their own style reducing the maltiness in favour of a more aromatic base, blended with herbs and spices. The London Dry Gin style was created. The only time I ever enjoyed ironing was the day I accidentally got gin in the steam iron Phyllis Diller. His Swiss home was the Manoir de Ban in Vevey where he continued to make films, compose musical scores and write his autobiography. In 1982 he bought the Grand Chateau de Signal in the hills of Lausanne and married his second wife in He was quoted as saying In Switzerland, people leave me alone. Phil Collins married his third wife, Orianne Cevey, a Swiss national, in They bought Sir Jackie Stewart's former house located in Begnins, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva. The three key ingredients have origins through Northern Europe and are an important part of European, Alpine folk medicine heritage. Therefore, they are an important part of Switzerland s botanical heritage. These ingredients add a little something that is quintessentially Swiss. 6 Ferdinand s Saar Dry Gin Rosehip Almond Shell Coriander Ginger Lavender Origin: Saarburg, Germany All botanicals are handpicked. Saar gin uses carefully hand-picked Reisling grapes from the steep shale slopes of the estate on the grand Saarburger Rausch site. Using over 30 finely balanced botanicals including lavender, which comes from fallow vineyards in the Konzer Talchen valley and the lemon-scented thyme is grown in their own garden. takes a back seat with this gin as the floral and grassy lemon notes are more dominant. 8 Cream Gin Cream Orange and lemon Cassio root Liquorice Cinnamon Origin: London, England Cream gin was popular in the Gin Palaces of the Victoria Era, however back then the gin would have been mixed with cream and sugar and left to infuse. To update this classic idea, the cream is cold distilled and used within the gin-production process like a botanical. This means that the cream is added before distillation starts rather than at the end, allowing a longer and maximised infusion. By not cooking the cream, not only do you not get that burnt cream smell and taste, but also the full flavour of the cream is left intact and as it is when completely fresh. Neat over ice. Bols Genever Amsterdam 1575 Star anise Orange peel Cherries Origin: Sheidam, Netherlands Distilled in one of the oldest distilleries still in existence, this gin has a maltier style the gin s original form. Using a windmill grinding process; corn, wheat and rye are pulverized to create a special flour. Using three copper distillers the flour is added to water and yeast creating a distillate, which the Dutch refer to as malt wine. The malt wine is then taken to the home of the distillers of the Bols Family in Amsterdam. Then the combination of botanicals is added using the same three copper distiller methods used before. The drink is simultaneously spicy and earthy; the taste has hints of fresh pine and forest. Neat.

10 Professor Cornelius Ampleforth s Bathtub Dry Gin Clove Cinnamon Orange peel Cardamom Origin: UK The marketing materials tell the story of a local mad scientist one Cornelius Ampleforth who locked himself in a room to invent a line of fine Gins! Bathtub Gin is produced in small batches using a traditional method called cold compounding. This almost-forgotten style of gin is perfect in sweet gin cocktails it s how the classic Tom Collins got its name and makes a tasty G&T. The bouquet is fruity-sweet and shows citrus and herbal notes. On the palate, it s possible to determine the expected sweetness that is supported by juniper and orange flavors. Professor Cornelius Ampleforth s Bathtub Old Tom Gin Citrus Liquorice root Origin: UK The Old Tom Gin in the Professor Ampleforth series is almost the very definition of what an Old Tom style gin should be. Sweet on the nose from the liquorice root with a sugary mouth feel and a lingering finish. It has a slightly earthy warmth but the sugary element seems to bring out the citrussy, juniper note. Old Tom got its name from an usual dispensing method used by London gin houses. A tom cat-shaped plaque would be hung outside where passers-by could drop a coin in the animal s mouth. The proprietor would then dispense a shot of gin from a tube under the cat s paws. Ledger s Tonic Water and Liquorice.
