3 WELCOME TO THE 32ND CHAPPEL BEER FESTIVAL The East Anglian Railway Museum and Campaign for Real Ale - Essex Branches once again bring you the 32nd Chappel Beer Festival. The East Anglian Railway Museum and the Campaign for Real Ale - Essex Branches welcome you to the 32nd Chappel Beer Festival. This festival is run by CAMRA as a fundraising exercise for the East Anglian Railway Museum, and we welcome all of you, our guests and supporters, to what we hope is one of your favourite beer festivals in the region. First, with some sadness, we would like to dedicate the Festival to the memory of Chris Podge Pollard who recently passed away. Podge ran the Belgium bar here at Chappel for many years, and I have no doubt he helped many people discover the vast range of Belgium beers he offered, and also his eclectic flavours of Gourmet pickled eggs. On a happier note we have, as always, got beers from all over the country and they can be found in the two main bars the Goods Shed and Resto Tent, while we appreciate that it may not be quite the same as being in the restoration shed itself, this marquee really does prevent the museum losing a month of restoration time. We also have three brewery bars, Nethergate, Wibblers and Shalford and as always Colchester Brewery will be hosting the Shunters Arms featuring local ales for you to choose from. And finally, we have a large selection of Ciders and Perries in the Cider tent in the Yard. We have again colour coded the cask cards according to the beer style this year, Dark ales are blue, Brown beers are on Brown cards, and Golden ales are on Cream cards. Over in the cider marquee Green cards mean Cider and Yellow equals Perry. Please allow us some leniency, the brewers don t always make it clear in the tasting notes, especially for seasonal or Festival specials, so it s educated guesses in some cases. We have a foreign beer bar, open Wednesday onwards, featuring beers from Belgium, Germany and North America, and Sara will have her Wine Bar selling local wines from Felsted vineyards. We have again a wide choice of food styles from the caterers offering a range of food to enjoy whilst trying some of the vast range of Beer available today. There is chocolate to match your beer from OddFellows chocolates, sharing bags of Crisps from Pipers, souvenir t-shirts and no doubt silly hats from Smart T s, and you can even get your glass engraved or a tankard amongst other products available at The Pewter Scribes engraving stand. The Thompson building on the lower side of the Orchard houses the model railway clubs display, and it may be open some of the daytimes of the festival. You are also welcome to look inside the Pub, The Viaduct, which is used as our First Aid point, as its too small a bar for the festival. If the doors open you can look inside, but if the doors closed, please knock first, someone may be getting treatment. Your safety and enjoyment are important, we want you to have a great day out and continue to return year after year. The site is a working railway yard, we try and make it as safe as possible but remember there are hazards out there, and the ground may be uneven. The Sun has been ordered, (I m not sure we need it after the summer we have had) so remember to use sunblock, and alcohol can impair your judgement especially if consumed in a short amount of time, so please allow plenty of time to enjoy the festival and by all means return another day. 32nd Chappel Beer Festival 3

4 Welcome On a safety issue please remember that the national rail platform can be crowded at times. If you want to leave by train please get to the platform in good time. If you are leaving by foot or car, please try and avoid leaving around train times (they are listed in the program) to help avoid overcrowding. NOTE: The Festival Program is printed in advance, we please check the national rail website, or the signs at the station for any late changes that may occur. And ALLOW AT LEAST 10 MINUTES TO GET TO THE TRAINS. Please also remember token and glass refund points close at 23:20 but are always busy around train leaving times, try and get your refund in good time if you can. Your attendance directly helps raise funds for the museums restoration, and while there are some funds available from the National Lottery, they can never cover all the work that the museum would like to do. This year if you have a few spare tokens please consider donating it to the N7 Steam Fund. The N7 (the black train parked outside with the banner on it, for anyone like me who is not that into trains) here at EARM is the only one left preserved in the UK, and anything you can spare to help with its running would be appreciated by the Museum s volunteers. If there is any aspect of the festival you are unhappy with we would like to hear via or writing so that we can consider how to improve next year, we try to learn from errors of judgement and build on the successes. If you want to write with compliments that s fine too. You can find us on Facebook, or at org.uk/ or write to us at the museum. Finally, please raise your glass to those who have given their time to allow this event to continue. None of the staff behind the bars are paid, all our volunteers have generously given up their time to ensure you enjoy the festival, please treat them with respect due if they are busy or struggling to meet your expectations as a customer. The festival takes months of organising as well as the hundreds of person hours to set up, run and then dismantle the festival and return the site to a working museum, why not consider joining us as a member of one or even both organisations? Ask at the Information stand in the Goods shed for more details. All there is to add is have a great day here and cross your fingers for the sunny weather although hopefully not as hot as the summer was... About CAMRA The Campaign for Real Ale has been striving to save Real ale for over forty years now and is the biggest consumer group in Europe with over 190,000 members. Not only do we campaign to save breweries and pubs, we run and support many beer festivals up and down the country and abroad. CAMRA was instrumental in bring about the scrapping of the beer duty escalator and earning a cut in beer duty. This was a fantastic step forward but now CAMRA must continue to ensure this work is not undone at future Budgets. CAMRA is also hard at work to try and bring about change in the way tax and rate changes are impacting pubs, to try and keep them at the heart of the community. If you wish to join CAMRA, you can get more details at the membership stand in the Goods Shed, we have a special offer if you join here while the festival is on. This festival is run by CAMRA as a Fund Raising Event for the East Anglian Railway Museum 4 32nd Chappel Beer Festival

7 About the East Anglian Railway Museum The East Anglian Railway Museum (EARM) originally took over the derelict station buildings and yard at Chappel some 45 years ago, and after years of work are slowly restoring and presenting the museum in 1950 s period appearance. This year we are highlighting the N7. Built at Stratford Works in East London in 1923, the locomotive is the sole survivor of 134 built for operating the suburban train services into Liverpool Street until 1962, when new electric trains replaced them. Opened in the 1850s, Stratford Works evolved to become one of the largest railway depots in the London area, and constructed many hundreds of steam and diesel locomotives and carriages for the train services into Liverpool Street and East London. With final closure in 1992, the site of the Works became occupied by the Olympic Park and the Westfield shopping complex. Taken for granted on a daily basis then and now remembered by so few, it was initially restored in 1989 after many years work, was kept as an operational machine until 2015 when the boiler insurance certification expired. It has undergone a cosmetic repaint whilst further evaluation takes place and other Museum projects are being advanced. It has been estimated that funding of 300,000 will be required to enable it to steam again - for which recent and welcome donations have already been secured. The Museum welcomes any further donations towards its resurrection and many other projects. For Gift Aided donations, please enquire at the Reception Centre or ask for further details from EARM staff on site, or at the information stand. Thank you. 17 A.I. is too important to be left in the hands of machines. The A.I. we re referring to isn t Artificial Intelligence, it s Ale Intelligence, of course. We re not technophobes, we just don t trust anything incapable of smelling, feeling or tasting to create something as delicately balanced as Landlord. That s why we have five hands-on, Heriot-Watt trained brewers involved in every step of the process, from barley delivery to filling the casks. This way, we can make sure that every sip of Taylor s is as delicious as humanly possible. Machines may one day take over the world, just be thankful you won t be around to drink their terrible beer.
