As a kid, I remember the start of school was signaled by the Labor Day holiday. I knew that this holiday had something to do with workers but didn t know the full meaning, so I looked it up. According to the dictionary, it is a public holiday or day of festivities held in honor of working people, in the US and Canada on the first Monday in September, in many other countries on May 1 The holiday which started in 1882 was established to acknowledge all working class people and give them a day off. I realize that many of us are retired now which gives us more free days to celebrate. These free days may include luncheons, programs, activities & special interests sponsored by the Newcomers Club. Speaking of luncheons, please remember to sign up quickly for our first luncheon on September 20 as seats are limited. Our ladies have planned a delicious meal, great entertainment and many outside activities and special interests to peak your interest. Luncheon details are found in this newsletter. Yes, the month of September holds special meaning. It is the start of Newcomers and includes a national holiday. 2 Special Interest Groups 10,000 Dice Game: Meets 1st Tues of each month at 1:00 pm in the Citrus Hills Auditorium in the Activity Center. Contact Jan Weaver or Nancy Newman Beading: Our goal is to have fun and create beautiful jewelry. We will be working on restringing old beads or creating new designs. There will be different teachers sharing new techniques and they will provide a supply list if needed. Come and join us for the first Thursday or Friday for an afternoon of fun with good friends. We are an informal, fun group and play open bridge as many of us are just getting back into the game. Also, we have no control of the AC, so please bring a sweater 3. NEW!!! Deadline for reservation is Thursday before the luncheon. A RESERVATION EXISTS WHEN YOUR CHECK HAS BEEN RECEIVED. Cancellations may be made prior to the deadline and a full refund will be provided, but after that date, you will only receive a refund if we can sell your lunch. If, at the last minute, you find you cannot attend the lunch, call Anne Lundberg. There is the possibility she has a waiting list and will be able to sell your reservation.

Checks are always made out to Citrus County Newcomers. Sometimes we have limited access to tickets or seats. Club members are accommodated prior to guests or spouses. Last minute cancellations cannot be accommodated unless we have a waiting list but you are welcome to find your own replacement. September 10: Tea at Sweetie s Café: We re doing a repeat of last year s visit to Sweetie s Café in Dunnellon at 3:30 pm. The cost is $21 plus tax, payable on site. Everyone enjoyed their food, hats and Victorian costumes last year so we re returning. This venue is adjacent to the Grumble House so you can shop there either before or after the tea. September 26: Dinner Bunch: Ruth Berg has scheduled dinner at the Bonefish Grill, 4701 SW College Rd., Ocala, at 5:30 pm. October 2: Lunch Bunch: Mallie Kyla s in Brooksville at 12:30 pm. Ruth Merk has scheduled September s lunch bunch (Yes, the date is right.) The restaurant is as everyone enjoyed this venue and asked Ruth to reschedule here. The address is 510 E. Liberty St., Brooksville. October 30: Harvest Dinner: Tuesday, at the Skyview Restaurant in Terra Vista at 5:30 pm. Join us for a Harvest Dinner celebration which gives you a great dinner and relaxing piano music. You will have your choice of a 6 oz. filet, a 10 oz. ribeye, 10 oz. sirloin or salmon. The cost is $35 and will include your tip, taxes, dessert and a glass of wine. All other beverages will be at the individual s cost. We ll need your check by October 22. Sign up at luncheon. November 5: Capitol Steps: Monday, at 7:30 pm at the UF Peterson Arts Center in Gainesville. Pat Sherman will be organizing a trip to see The Capitol Steps the night before November s election. If you don t know of the group, they are a political satire group out of Chicago. They do relevant current comments on today s political situation. Pat has purchased 12 tickets so get in touch with her as soon as possible if you want to attend. This event is open to the public and fills up quickly so please get in touch soon. The cost will be $15 and includes homemade soup, salad, a hot entrée, fresh fruit, tea sandwiches, scones, assorted teas and a dessert bar. Specialty drinks will be available at the individual s cost. Sign up at luncheon.
