3 Your new home Pathways at Northeastern arranges high-quality accommodations close to the University campuses in Boston and Seattle. Excellent value housing options are provided to students in the American Classroom, Bachelor s Completion, Graduate Global Pathways, and College of Professional Studies master's programs.* Read below to find out what these student residences have to offer. Convenient location All options are within easy reach of the University and city center, and near lots of shops, restaurants and cafés. Safe and secure Feel at ease in your new home with secure access doors and staff available to help solve any problems. Well-equipped All bedrooms include a comfortable bed, study desk, chair, and closet or dresser for each resident. Kitchens in shared apartments are also fully equipped. Multicultural In your new home, you will have the chance to meet and make friends with people from all over the world. 4 Life in Boston As the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, Boston has always played a key role in American history, and continues to lead the way in business, culture and social scenes. History Visit the Boston Tea Party Museum to learn about events that sparked America s war for independence, then walk the Freedom Trail to explore American Revolutionary history on foot. Nightlife The neighborhoods surrounding Boston s 60+ universities have lots of entertainment venues. Head over to Central Square in Cambridge to find great live music, as well as popular comedy and improvisation clubs. Getting around Walk: Boston s compact size makes it an excellent city for walking. Exploring on foot is also the best way to see some of America s most famous historical sites. Subways and buses: The city s subway (known locally as the T ) and bus systems provide a cheap, convenient way to get around. Northeastern is located near two T lines and multiple local buses. Your transportation CharlieCard can also help you get discounts at more than 75 of the city s attractions. Nature Stroll through Boston Common, America s oldest public park, or look for whales and other marine life on one of the city s harbor cruises. The waterfront along Boston Harbor also offers beautiful sunset views between the sail boats. Shopping Pop into the small boutiques along fashionable Newbury Street, or the large department stores in the Prudential Center mall. Take a break from browsing the hundreds of shops at historic Faneiul Hall Marketplace to watch a lively outdoor street performance. Food Boston's diversity is evident in its variety of restaurants and cuisines. Favorites include Santouka (Japanese ramen), Island Creek Oyster Bar (seafood), Kaju Tofu House (Korean BBQ), Q Restaurant (Chinese hot pot), and La Familia Giorgios (Italian), just to name a few! Sport Watch professional sports teams throughout the year, including basketball, baseball, ice hockey and American football. In April, cheer on runners at the world-famous Boston Marathon. Outside the city Head to the surrounding hills of New England to hike among the colorful autumn leaves and visit charming small towns. In warmer months, the beaches of Cape Cod provide a beautiful ocean backdrop for surfing and sunbathing. Bicycles: Rent a shared bike from any of 190 stations in the Boston area for a low yearly membership fee. Shuttles: Logan Express will take you between the airport and Back Bay for only $3.00 when you show your CharlieCard to the driver. Taxis: Cabs are widely available in downtown Boston and at many of the city s popular destinations, including Faneuil Hall, Copley Place and outside subway and train stations. 6 Living in Back Bay International Guest House is in one of Boston s most sophisticated residential neighborhoods. Back Bay's central location and stylish shops and restaurants attract students and high-level professionals alike. Elegant surroundings Inspired by the wide, tree-lined streets of Paris, Back Bay has some of America s best-preserved 19th century architecture. You can view both the Beaux Arts style of Boston Public Library and the Romanesque architecture of Trinity Church at Copley Square. Meanwhile, leafy Commonwealth Avenue is lined with grand historic mansions. Outdoor fun Back Bay borders two of Boston s favorite green spaces, Boston Common and the Esplanade on the Charles River. Open throughout the year, they offer incredible views of spring flowers, summer fireworks and colorful fall leaves. You ll also find running paths, tennis courts, baseball fields, outdoor concert theaters and an ice skating rink. Shopping and dining Shop until you drop in Back Bay s wide range of stores, featuring everything from trendy fast fashion to luxury brands. The Prudential Center Mall has all the top international chain stores. Head to Newbury Street to browse upscale art galleries and cozy bookstores before sitting down at one of the chic sidewalk cafés. 9 Meal plans Northeastern s on-campus dining facilities offer tasty, nutritious meals at a subsidized rate. Your meal plan provides cash-free convenience, and will allow you to spend more time on campus, socializing with your classmates and instructors. If you are a student who lives in one of the University residence halls you must purchase a meal plan. Students living in off-campus housing may purchase meals à la carte, or you can buy a non-resident meal plan for a discounted rate on meals. What s included? You can choose from meal plans at varying funding levels, depending on how much you plan to dine on campus. Your meal plan dollars are accepted at any of the residential dining venues on the Boston campus. A portion of your meal plan funds include Dining Dollars, which allow you to use your Husky ID Card at several designated cafés and fast food restaurants on or around the University campus. Unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of each semester and cannot be topped up. You can add additional money (called Husky Dollars ) to your Husky Card for use at any establishment that accepts them. These funds will be available until you graduate or leave the University, and can be spent on food, books, and much more. What types of food are available? Northeastern s dining services cater to a range of dietary requirements offering menu options for vegetarians, vegans, those who require kosher or halal food preparation, and those with food allergies. Sustainable, local ingredients are used whenever possible, and meals are designed with balanced nutrients in mind. Meal plan types Resident meal plans If you are an American Classroom program student living on campus, you are required to purchase a minimum plan of 10 meals per week but can instead opt for a 15 or 19 meals per week plan. 11 Getting around Walk: Northeastern s campus in South Lake Union is a short stroll to plenty of shops, restaurants and entertainment. Life in Seattle Surrounded by stunning scenery and untouched nature, and home to some of the world s most successful companies, Seattle offers international students an outdoors lifestyle. History Discover the rich, natural and cultural heritage of the region at the Burke Museum. The Museum of History and Industry showcases Seattle s strong tradition of innovation. Nature The Emerald City is surrounded by blue waters, green forests and snow-capped mountains. In Seattle, you re never far from excellent outdoor recreation and stunning scenery. Shopping Head to the artsy Fremont neighborhood for the Sunday flea market featuring more than 200 vendors, or downtown for the multi-level Nordstrom department store. Bargain hunters can visit any of three discount outlet malls surrounding the city. Nightlife At night, the neighborhood of Belltown offers a rich selection of cool clubs and trendy cafés. The city s famous music scene also serves up lots of great live performances. Food You re never at a loss for delicious seafood, including crab, oysters and Pacific salmon look out for flying fish at the famous Pike s Place Market! For something lighter, sit down for a bowl of Vietnamese pho, or get a coffee at the first ever Starbucks. Sport Watch professional sports teams throughout the year, including baseball (Mariners), American football (Seahawks), and soccer (Sounders FC and Reign FC). The city also has several popular non-professional teams for ice hockey, rugby, basketball, roller derby and Ultimate Frisbee. Outside the city Hop on a ferry to visit the lush gardens of the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island or to the San Juan Islands for whale watching. Mount Rainier offers excellent skiing and snowboarding. Rail and buses: Seattle offers affordable transportation with well-connected routes. The South Lake Union Streetcar to Belltown runs in front of Northeastern s campus. The Link Light Rail will take you to the airport for only $3. Monorail: Enjoy a quick trip and great views of the city from the elevated monorail, built for the 1962 Seattle World s Fair. Bicycles: Seattle s shared bike program offers a convenient way to get around the city, for a low yearly membership fee. Follow the 27-mile Burke-Gilman Trail through the heart of the city s University District and along the stunning shores of Lake Washington. Ferries: Escape the city bustle and enjoy beautiful waterfront views by hopping on a ferry to the charming Bainbridge Island. Kings County Water Taxi will take you between West Seattle and Pier 50 downtown. Taxis: Metered taxis can be found downtown or at the airport, and ride-shares such as Uber and Lyft can be booked by smartphone app. One-way taxi fare between the airport and downtown Seattle ranges from $40 to $55. Meals are not included. Booking length: month-to-month I stayed at the Vermont Inn during my first month in Seattle, and it helped to have a home base while I got to know the city. 13 How to book your housing The process for securing your student accommodation depends on where you plan to reside. See the table below for details on each housing option. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. The housing form must be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to Arrival Week orientation. You can also request transportation from the airport to your accommodation (for a $130 fee) on the form. When we have received your form, we will send you an invoice with payment instructions. Housing is confirmed when payment for the semester has been received in full. If you cancel your booking, the schedule for refunds is: up to 4 weeks before check-in date OR in the case of visa denial: 100% of payment from 4 weeks before check-in to move-in date: 50% of payment after move-in date: 0% of payment Vermont Inn Seattle (off-campus) Spring Summer Fall Graduate Global Pathways in Seattle Direct entry to master's degree Go to vermont-inn.com to book your housing directly as early as possible. Bookings can be made for 1 month or longer. Housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis, therefore you are encouraged to apply as early as you are eligible. * Please note: International Guest House booking dates do not align with College of Professional Studies master's degrees starting in April or July. However, students who are directly admitted to these programs may still be able to book the residence on a case-by-case basis. Accommodations when you progress to your degree American Classroom students may be able to live in Boston on-campus residences when they progress to a bachelor s degree. On-campus housing is limited, and is not guaranteed. Graduate Global Pathways students will be advised on finding off-campus housing when they progress to a degree. 13
