3 Company profile In 1936, Ivan Peter Talijancich (later known as Ivan Talley) established a small seafood business in the town of Motueka, at the top of New Zealand s South Island. Today the Talley s Group is a multi-division, international company. It is still owned and operated by the Talley family, with second and third generation family members taking an active part in its operation. The original parent company, Talley s Fisheries Ltd, has expanded to encompass: a fishing and seafood division with numerous freezer and fresh fish trawlers, and specialised fish and shellfish processing plants; a vegetable division; a dairy division, which includes a fully automated ice cream plant and significant shareholding in Open Country Cheese; and a meat division, with a majority stake in AFFCO Holdings Limited. 4 Fishing & Seafood Division Talley s Fishing & Seafood Division is the oldest in the company, starting life as Motueka Fisheries Limited in 1936 and later becoming Talley s Fisheries Limited. The Fishing & Seafood Division now owns and operates a large fleet of inshore and deepwater fishing vessels and also contracts many independent fishermen to supply fresh seafood to Talley s processing plants. Talley s operates under New Zealand s Quota Management System (QMS), which has the aim of conserving major fishery stocks and providing a platform for sustainable fisheries development. This quota system, which was introduced in 1986, lies behind New Zealand s reputation as the world leader in fully sustainable fisheries management. Owning and controlling significant Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) within New Zealand s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Talley s harvests most commercial species of fish, from the surface species of albacore tuna to the deepwater fish of orange roughy and the seabed yield of scallops. Other principal species caught and processed include hoki, ling, oreo dory, squid, hake, flatfish, monkfish and warehou. The majority of Talley s commercial fish harvesting, run under the Quota Management System, occurs within the pollution-free deep blue waters of New Zealand s 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. This pristine ocean region extends from the subtropical southern Pacific Ocean to the extreme cold of subantarctic waters between 25 and 55 latitude south. Inshore species are harvested right to the edge of New Zealand s continental shelf at a depth of 200m. Fish from these waters are landed fresh to one of three fish processing factories, which operate 24 hours a day, ensuring the freshest quality product. All Talley s factories are government licensed and all facilities, at-sea and onshore, are regularly inspected and monitored to ensure they comply with applicable national and international standards. Talley s does not soak or use artificial additives when processing shellfish. Customers get just pure 100% natural shellfish. Greenshell mussels are cultivated throughout the pristine waters of New Zealand s Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay where they are grown on either Talley s or privatelyowned mussel farms. They are harvested and delivered to Talley s local factories where they are cleaned, processed, graded, inspected, and either quick frozen or marinated before final packing. Oysters and scallops are opened, cleaned and graded. They are then either quick frozen or delivered fresh daily to make sure their full, succulent flavour is retained. Although Talley s produces many varieties of vegetables it continues to specialise in these popular products: peas, beans, spinach, corn, carrots and potatoes. As well as directly producing crops on its farms, Talley s Vegetable Division works closely with independent growers who are committed to its high standards of production. Vegetables are packed either to specific customer requirements, or in standard packs of 500g, 1kg, 2kg, 5kg, 10kg or 25kg, as well as in consumer packs or cartons. Specific grades or requirements can be produced on request. Most of Talley s vegetables are exported, with the main markets being Asia and Australia; however, Talley s also controls a significant share of the New Zealand domestic market.
